I am always surprised that so many cruise/hotel guests, children and adults alike, seem to think the hallways are "outside" and will stand at their doors yelling at folks down the hallway or will thunder down the halls at full speed playing tag.

Vent over, now for a positive when vacationing...Have you ever notice how nice people on vacation are when riding in elevators? Total strangers yet they smile, they chat and even ask about your day however, when I enter an elevator during my normal work day/place, still "total strangers", most folks will not even make eye contact.

Totally agree with the first part people make too much noise in the hallways.
Wouldn’t know about your second part I don’t take elevators when I’m not on vacation. None near me

I agree. That's why we are pretty strategic about choosing our staterooms and try to stay as far from foot traffic, elevators, stairs, laundry rooms, etc. as possible.

Yes, we had some lovely conversations in the Fantasy elevators on our last cruise!

Elevator etiquette always seems more positive and uplifting on a Disney Cruise.

As for the hallway...it can get pretty noisy but it's a Disney ship with plenty of kids so not a lot you can do about it. Usually by 11PM the place is completely quiet.

I don't normally talk elevators when not on vacation, but I do notice how nice people are. My last cruises a few weeks ago I swear I had the most people ask how my day was going and how many cruises I had been on, etc. At home people I see sometimes will say hello ask, but not as many

I'm almost always "that guy" in an elevator who will talk to anyone. I've even been known to the be last one on and instead of turning around to face a closed elevator door, I just look at everyone looking at me and talk to them. There is plenty of time to turn around when the car arrives at a floor.

Just a thought. When one goes about their everyday life, especially at work, most people are very focused on issues, problems. deadlines, etc. They probably are not intentionally being unfriendly, they are just so focused on other things. When these same people are on vacations, they are relaxed and can focus on the moment. We have a rule that work does not go on vacation with us. We are not allowed to talk about work or even think about work.

I am a dictator Mom when it comes to inside voices, inside feet in hotels/on cruises. Started when our kids were young — I told them you never know who is trying to sleep/rest/relax behind those doors. Even now, when they are teens, I still remind them to whisper if I need to. I don’t care if it is a Disney cruise with lots of kids, good manners are always appropriate.

I'm always nice to people, and not just when I'm on vacation. I practice the Golden Rule: "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"

That's why I don't mind if my room/cabin is a hike from elevators or amenities. With still-napping kids, having a quiet room is everything. Sometimes you hear little kids shouting past midnight and I'm just like, dude, why are your kids still even up?

I'm vigilant about noise at home and on vacation. Same rules both places. I really don't like listening to my child over project inside. However, no matter how many times I remind her, she still needs more reminding. She's got friends who are super quiet, but that's not her. No doubt someone thinks I've given up parenting. I haven't but my kids is exuberant. It's worth it to remember that some kids are just logs despite every parent's best effort.

I've never understood letting your kids tear down the hallways and make a ton of noise outside of staterooms. I've always asked my kids to be appropriately quiet in the hallways, especially by what hour we are moving around. During the day I let them talk normally, but no running. At night, I expect them to be quieter!

I think people are more friendly when they know they have something in common. On a Disney cruise it's pretty obvious there's a lot we all share.
Kudos to you parents who are teaching your kids proper behavior in public. Now if we could only teach some of the adults...

There was this boy (probably about 8-9 years old) running down the hall one day when we were returning to our room (after dinner & show). No adults in sight anywhere (our hallway or the one on the other side of the ship). I asked him to stop, as it's now bedtime for many people.

We got to our room, and there he went running down the hall on the other side of the ship. AND I heard a door open and an adult telling him to "come in now".

Really, the passageway is not "outside".

On our October cruise on the Dream I booked a last minute FL resident rate and ended up on deck 10 forward but on port side so we were under concierge cabins right at the elevator. Now, we LOVE deck 10 forward, but like to be starboard and under the Rainforest , but heck, it was a pretty good rate and you get what you get and don't have a fit, right?

I did not have a fit, but I sure think the people above us had them hourly and at various times of the day. Either that or they loaded a pack of wild elephants who were practicing for the long jump up in the cabin. Still not sure.

In January on the Magic we had a cabin that had a loose veranda separation panel so it was banging back and forth. Evidently, someone in another cabin called GS to report that we had bathing suits on the balcony and that the noise of them flapping in the wind was annoying to them.
First of all, this was the first night and we did not swim in 40 degree weather leaving the Port of Miami (we are Floridians for heavens sake and that was COLD) I mentioned to the GS people that we don't put our bathing suits on the veranda to dry because 1. they request that you don't do that and 2. because there was no sun out there to dry them anyway.
At that time, I mentioned that the veranda separator was banging around and seemed to be coming from our neighbors cabin side. They sent someone up within 5 minutes and it was all taken care of. Oddly enough the folks who reported the "flapping noisy bathing suits" happened to be the folks with the flapping veranda separator. All in all, everyone was happy after that mystery was solved.

We stayed at a Fairfield Inn last month that had a sign posted in the lobby and in the elevator that stating their quiet hours 10pm to 7am. They also went on to say that during these hours please use your "inside voice" when speaking even in your rooms. I really appreciated this and had to laugh because it sounded like an elementary school teacher wrote the note given how it was phrased. And we had a great, quiet nights stay! Loved it and will stay there again. As far as the elevators, I think that when we are on a Disney Cruise I am so happy to be there that I will talk to anyone and the friendliness of the cm's and environment make it very easy to be pleasant and courteous.

Maybe I'm thinking specifically about WDW, where we are all so exhausted after a full day of touring that we pass out the minute we get back to our room, usually 10:30 at the latest with small kids. But of course today my eldest banged the door open and flicked on the lights on his little brother taking a nap (because he had - the horror - gotten sticky popsicle syrup on his shirt and wanted to change into a new shirt). He also laughs uproariously at cartoons on the airplane, forgetting within 5 seconds of each time I tell him to pipe down because Jerry has just done something too funny to Tom.

Can’t say that I blame him for that. Even I have to laugh at some of those Tom and Jerry cartoons. The one with Jumbo the baby elephant is a classic.

Everyone you are thinking of it wrong, I had that happen on my last cruise. The kids were three doors down from us.

Well I would just call the room on the phone all hours of the night, they pick up. I hang up. And you can do that from any phone on the ship.
