Our back door is sliding glass, and gives full view of our kitchen/dining room to anyone in the yard (or maybe even the neighbors :scared:). I'd like to put some curtains up on a tension or spring rod, so as not to have to drill into the wall. What should I be looking for to ensure they are not see through, but not too heavy for a spring curtain rod? I'm not looking to spend a lot or get anything too fancy. Would Walmart or Home Depot be the least expensive place to go, or is there a better place? What should I be looking for? Thanks!

Not for a sliding door, but I bought blackout curtains for my sons room and they are still light weight enough to use tension rods. I got the rods and curtains from target for around $40 for all of it (two curtains and two rods)

I would be very reluctant to use a tension rod on a sliding glass door. For one thing, the rod would go inside the door frame, which places the curtains too close to the door where they will get caught every time you go in or out. They will also drag on the floor since the length is meant for curtains which are hung from above the door frame.

The other reason would be that anything dense enough to not see through is also going to be heavy enough to put a strain on a curtain rod of that length. A support of some sort is almost always needed at the midpoint of the rod to keep it from sagging. And that's going to involve drilling holes. If you don't put that support in, not only will you have a sagging rod, you will also run the risk of the whole thing falling down on someone.

Maybe you should look into covering the windows with a decorative contact adhesive film that looks like etched glass? It will allow light to come in but no one will be able to really see what is going on inside the house.

We have vertical blinds over our sliding glass door. We keep them open the majority of the time though, we have plants that sit in front of the door. :)

I got some from Home Depot. I can't remember the price, but they couldn't have been too expensive. There are not a lot of choices but I just wanted something quick that would block the light.

In my dd's dorm room a couple of years ago we used command hooks to hold a curtain rod above the window frame. It stayed up all year and removed easily without damage.

Don't know if you've found anything yet, but 20+ years ago, we lived in a townhouse with sliding glass doors to the backyard. Since the two doors were quite wide, tension rods would not work for us. I found the best selection and deals from JC Penney's, but that was back in the day when they had the catalog and lots of sales and codes.

I've recently shopped for drapes for odd-sized bedroom windows (wide); I wanted something to block out light, and inexpensive, easy to put up, etc. I ended up getting Samara Eclipse panels at walmart. Each panel cost $9.87; regardless of length and the longest size was 84". The same brand and style was also sold at Kmart for $13.49. I also happened to see them at Kohls for $29.99! They might be a little too thick to slide along for patio doors, but they definitely are not see thru.

Overall, I'd say Walmart had the best selection of inexpensive drapes. The Home Depot near us had very little to pick from. Kmart had several, but the prices were higher than Walmart.

Im quite frugal, and most of our curtains are from jcpenny. I have gotten some really great deals there.

That being said, I have some that are also from Ikea. And, I feel Ikea has the best price for decorative rods! (or did the last time I needed some!).

I use vertical blinds on my sliding glass door. Then I added a curtain rod where I put a valance. It works very well.
