Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

donmil723 - So sorry to hear about your accident..but glad that you seem to be keeping positive spirits :thumbsup2

On a much lighter note I finally ran at my gym this morning, because it was just TOO hot out to run today...well apparently my gym track switches directions every other day (which is new) and I did not realize until I was running the opposite direction :rotfl: whoops! Still got in 4 miles though.

Starting a new job next week...very nervous and its going to be hard to have an earlier schedule to get used to :surfweb: but I will make time to train and be on the disboards lol

Donna, sorry to hear about the accident and injuries, hope you get healed up and back to normal soon

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet but, has anyone noticed Disney opened up a wait list for the W&D half? It's on a first come, first served basis. This should be interesting!

I can't say I am surprised and hope that everyone that wants to run gets in. I think they will use the wait list to get some numbers and change plans accordingly. A company Disney's size can accommodate more runners pretty easily and lets be honest, they don't want to leave all that potential income on the table.

OK...my two big questions are...

1.) Where and what are you planning on eating the afternoon/night before the race?

2.) If you are driving, what time do you plan on leaving for the race and what is the time you are going to be there beforehand?

I'm starting to panic a little. I am flying in that day and flying home the next day....starting to regret that decision, but it is the only way I can run this one... :scared:

I will be at the Boma meet the night before and while I am not 100% certain on my race day nutrition I will make my big meal either a late breakfast or the first available lunch reservation of the day. Then throughout the day I'll have some quickly digested carbs like fruit and bagles and will probably make sure to have some protein bars on me.

I will be riding to the race and those plans aren't hammered down yet. More then likely we will drive to Epcot, walk through the park and IG to one of the Boardwalk area host hotels for a ride. I am anticipating getting to the start about 2 hours ahead of time but am not sure.

I am arriving Friday and leaving Sunday so I plan on staying at the party until they kick me out. I can sleep on the plane.

Alas, we were not all blessed with your super human abilities, Frank. Us mere mortals are gonna get wet.

Oh don't worry Todd, I'll be just as soaked as the rest of you if it rains. It will at least remove the desire to jump into that Mexico fountain after the race though.

I love seeing the excitement brewing for this run.

Nutrition is a personal thing. The only advice I really have to add is do not go to the race feeling full. Whether it is food or drink, take it easy. Having a full belly will actually slow your ability to take in oxygen, not to mention give you a good chance of feeling sick part way through. Trust me, I have made this mistake before, most often by drinking too much water or sports drink close to the race.

I plan to get there about 1 and half to 2 hours before the start. I like to walk around, take in the atmosphere, talk to some other runners, etc. I, like several others, am parking a car at EPCOT. Not sure how I will get to the start. I will have some other family with a car that can drop me off, or I will get to a resort and take a bus.

Hope everyones training is going well. I am planning to run a cross country race on 8/14. This will be a new experience for me as I pretty much always run on asphalt. So any advice about running on grass and dirt versus asphalt is appreciated. This will be my last race before Wine and Dine.

Thanks for the link to the race course!

Now, for my big UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lots of highway, as usual.

An out and back stretch???? I HATE having runners pass me in the opposite direction, knowing they have completed several additional miles!!!! Perhaps I am alone in this . . .

Also, do you think the end of the race is the hill near the Worldshowcase Rear Park Entrance? Not sure how aggresively I can attack that hill at the end of the race.

That's all of the complaints I've got. Other than that, it looks perfect. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!

I headed back to the resort as people were starting the scavenger hunt. I thought they did call it towards the end though :confused3

Did they? If so I was gone by then.

Oh well, I am just thankful to be alive although I was upset that my running had to be put on hold for a few days.

Yikes! At least you're okay. You sound like me though. I had to have stitches put in my back a few weeks ago and the first thing I asked was, "can I still play softball?" :p

Where and what are you planning on eating the afternoon/night before the race?

I am still a running novice so I don't know all the ins and outs. But I was told once to carb up around 12 hours prior to every race, so I'm eating at Mama Melrose in the early afternoon. Will probably have a light CS dinner around 6:30.

On a much lighter note I finally ran at my gym this morning, because it was just TOO hot out to run today...

I wouldn't know about that these days! Here in SF we're having the coldest summer in like 40 years. I ran the Chase Corporate Challenge last night (just 3.5 miles) and it was freezing! Two minutes into the run the body heat kicked in, but the 30 minutes prior to the race sucked. lol

Hi all,

So this week has been a roller coaster with visiting my mom in Seattle where she is finishing up cancer treatment to the boyfriend (who was supposed to be joining me on this trip) and I breaking up.

But all is good, my Mom is doing better than we expected, and I got to get some awesome runs in in Seattle (weather was amazing!!). I may be doing this disney trip on my own but we'll see...trying to convince an old college roommate to join me for a girl's only weekend.

Training is going great, love my group that I train with, but our run last night in triple digits was intense!!

I love the medal, but it's my first half medal so I think whatever it ended up looking like, I'd love it :)

Well I get a new little toy today that should help motivate me for running. I bought one of those Nathan hydration belts. Got the 2 bottle one for me and the 4 bottle one for DH from runningwarehouse.com Got both for $46 and some change with free second day air. Not to shabby.

As for me and the food. I personally have been playing around running in the morning, afternoon and evening. I tend to find if I eat a fuller meal about 1.5 hours before I do much better, feel like I can push through and have an easier time. Of course I'm only going about 5 miles right now too. I also find that I need more protein when I eat these than carbs.

I'm still going to play and tweak.

Anyway, I've ran the last couple of days. Yesterday, not such a good run but today was better! Hope to do 8 miles on Friday for my long run for the week. I always do a run/walk anyway but hope I don't have to walk more than usual. Wish me luck!!!!!

By the way after re-reading your message I have to tell you that you sort of gave me a kick in the you know what...I have really been slacking lately and knowing what you have been dealing with and still running more miles than me...I decided no more excuses!!!

Glad to hear that your mom is doing well, I know that must be a difficult thing to deal with for you and your mother. I might also be doing my disney trip alone ( I am so sorry to hear about your breakup) but am in sort of a similar situation with my trip plans up in the air (with some relationship issues :headache:) maybe we can meet up sometime, when are you going and where are you staying for your trip?

As for eating before, we are having a late lunch/early dinner at Yak N Yeti. I think our ressie is for around 4pm. The evening prior we will be at Ohana.

Ok, now that's just creepy! We have Ohana the night before and Yak & Yeti for lunch (ours is at 1). Great minds think alike! :)

 Sending good thoughts for your Mom's recovery. Do you know about the DisMeet at Boma Friday night for dinner? I think there's still plenty of room. It was 102 here yesterday, and I would not even have attempted a run outside! We ran 4 miles Tuesday night, but it was only 96!:thumbsup2 Funny how those couple of extra degrees push you over the edge!

Thanks for all of the responses about the food issue. I'm not sure what we are going to do as we will be on an airplane at 12 hours out. I think we may just head straight for packet pick up when we get in...then catch a bite to eat at WPE. I can get a sandwich or order a pizza and eat some (prob not all of it). Then maybe get a bagel and a banana to eat closer to the race. I used to be a night runner...but now it's not an option since I work at night and have a baby to get to sleep when I get home. I haven't ran in the evenings in about 3 years. I do remember it being easier on the tummy though!! :cool2:

Wow...another Ohio-an!! Lily, Frank, Ted, Me and Denny...anyone else gonna be there from NE Ohio??

The description provided a few months ago would lead one to believe the finish was at the intersection of the Epcot and the WorldShowcase inside the park. The map seems to point at stayin backstage the entire race. Actually that makes much more sense logistically as it alows time to construct the finish line and not block off any of the park. Either way the course does not go over the the hills between england and France... But will pick up the hills just before Yacht Club and ofter Beach.

I may be the unique one as I actually have learned to like out and backs. Note that unless you are at the real pointy end of the race or keeping the caboose occupied I do not believe you will see many folks on the out and back.

Honestly your bigger issue is staying hydrated. Make sure to bring a water onto the plane and make a point of consuming water regualrly on the trip down. The next issue is acclimating to the Orlando weather with just a few hours exposure. Again, hydrate and stay out as much as practicable to allow your body time to soak in the moisture and warmth.

Starting a new job next week...very nervous and its going to be hard to have an earlier schedule to get used to :surfweb: but I will make time to train and be on the disboards lol

Good luck! It is difficult when your schedule gets mixed up and breaks into your routine. I've spent the past week really thinking about whether or not to enroll in a certified paralegal program (I'm a paralegal now, just not a "certified" one) but knowing what an intense program it is is making me think about my running and how I'd be able to fit it in. But the raise I'd get may make it worth it ;).

I'm going camping tomorrow through Monday so hopefully my long run this week (8 miles) will be nice and cool.

I mentioned this on another thread but I bought two super nice Mizuno running tank tops from Running Warehouse (www.runningwarehouse.com) a couple of days ago for $14. I got them today and LOVE them. I went back to their website and they have lots of Mizuno shorts on sale for $14 too (this stuff is regularly $30-$45). Also, if you use the code WISHD for anything else you buy on there (doesn't apply to Mizuno unfortunately) you get 15% off.

I have no idea what I'm doing for food that Saturday. I'm more concerned when my precious nap will be had :). I get such mixed advice/information with different books I read about "carb loading".

Regarding the out and back. I haven't done a race with one but the last two races I've done, some of the people that finish will turn around and run back through the course (these are small local races). I don't think it's discouraging only because when I feel like dropping my pace back to over a 10 minute mile and then I see a 70ish year old man who's already done it gives me a little extra motivation :).

Where and what are you planning on eating the afternoon/night before the race?

Our group has ADR at 1900 Park Fare for breakfast after the 5K. During the day we are going to relax by the pool than have 'linner' (lunch/dinner) at Earls Sandwich at DTD.

We're not driving, but we are staying at a host resort and we'll probably head to the start line by 8:00 pm. I'm sure a recommended schedule will posted as we get closer to the race.

On another note, I love seeing people wear their medals the next day :thumbsup2 it's an accomplishment to be proud of.

Geez...haven't given thought to food yet...I was hoping to try some places that I usually don't get to go to when the kids are along such as any of the Japanese restaurants.

I guess I should discuss with our little group what we should do and make some ressies before we get there.

I'm just very excited for the Food & Wine fest -- first timer here!

I'm going to take the resort bus to the start line. Hoping it's not too early, but at least the start line will be a fun atmosphere, and not freezing cold, like the past few Disney races have been. :-)

Last night I did 6.6 miles in 88 degree weather, so I think I'm prepared for anything.

I just bought my hydration belt from running warehouse, they have great shipping. They also have 15% off if you click on the link through their facebook page too.

This weekend I'm going on a long walk - about 11 miles. I plan on doing it all by walking and see my time so I will know my - hopefully - worst case scenario.
