Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

I'll be wearing my WISH shirt (green race ready shirt) before and after the race and bright red Puma running shorts during it. As we get closer to the race someone might suggest a place to all get together at WWoS before the start and a place and time to meet up after. Usually it is at the "W" in meet up area but since it will be at Epcot probably in front of a country at a certain time late enough that everyone (or mostly everyone) has finished.

It'd be great if we were meeting before the race...I have always wanted to meet fellow DIS people, especially since I am running the race solo and don't know anyone else who will be there :goodvibes I wanted to get a green WISH shirt, but not sure I will in time for the half...I think I might try and just wear something lime green at least :thumbsup2

I'll be in my DISUnplugged cap most of the weekend, with the exception of the race itself.

I wish they made DISunplugged tech gear.

Is there a DIS Meet planned for runners the day of the race? I saw there was a BOMA meet on Friday but I've got dinner at Cape May that night. If there's a race day meet I'd attend that one! Thanks to my cousin backing out I am taking this trip solo. :sad1:

If you are coming solo, you should definitely cancel your Cape May Cafe dinner and join us at Boma!

Hi Everyone -

I'm not taking the trip solo, but I am running solo and would love to be able to meet other Dis people before the half as well. I hate being at a start with all my energy and nerves and not having people who understand the pre race jitters. So count me in whenever we decide who wants to meet up that night.

i won't be in wish lime green, but I'll figure out a way to identify myself before then.

If you are looking for a standard T-shirt you can order one here. The deadline for the race ready shirts has passed I believe, at least for this order.

Thanks so much for the link :goodvibes I might attempt to get a lime green shirt and design something myself if I have time

I feel the same way...it would be great to be distracted by good company at the start to calm my nerves :cutie:

The thought for a greet and meet:grouphug:was at 4pm at AKL in the lobby area. This way those going to Boma for dinner would not have an issue. Would like to have as many Disers at the meet on Friday night as we can.

See you there

Kathy

We could possibly do 4pm.

Yes, the Boma dinner is at 5 on Friday. There is a meet in the lobby area at 4 to get some cool group pics with animals in the background!

Well, I've got the lime green shirt to wear. I hope we can organize a meet at WWoS before the start. I'll be alone (DH and DD will meet me at the end) and PLENTY nervous, so talking to others will definitely help!

I think I missed you, but have a get 8 miler! Hope the weather cooperates.

I've got a 5K on Sunday morning - called Joggin for the Noggin. The part I'm looking forward to is the after party at my favorite brewpub. They're calling it Keg, Eggs and Legs! It's the whole reason I signed up. :lmao:

Thank you! It was wonderful! When I went out to start running it was 59 degrees and sunny :goodvibes. It was a gorgeous run through the country/mountains. I guess I didn't take into account that not many people must run on these long country roads as I was charged by several dogs that weren't restrained. I only had one actually lunge at me (a German Sheppard with it's hair up and teeth showing) but luckily I always carry dog mace on me.

It was also the first time that I felt like I belonged to a "club". A lot of my cousins (who were camping as well) are into running, triathlon's, CrossFit, etc. that it was fun to talk to them about races they've done, training they're doing, etc.

Hope you enjoyed your 5k! I'm signing up for a 10k at the end of October that's sponsored by Blue Moon beer. Whatever motivates! :cutie:

I'm not sure yet what I'm wearing to the race (I work on one race outfit at a time! ;) ) but I don't know if it'll be lime green.

I hope everyone had a great weekend and have had success in their training! I was supposed to run an hour last night but I had so much going on when I got home that I would run as fast as I could for 5 minutes, get off (the treadmill) and do laundry, make food for the week, etc., run another fast 5 minutes, etc. until I got to an hour :).

My flight arrives at 3:20 Friday. I'm not staying at AKL. I wonder if the Disney Express can take my bags to my hotel and take me to AKL for the Boma meet. ??? :teeth:

It doesn't sound like a problem, but you should call Disney and ask.

I remember a brief discussion about hydration packs (several pages back). Can I get some recommendations on a decent (hopefully $50 or less) hydration pack for a 25 y/o female who "runs" 5 to 6 miles routinely (as part of her work-out), but has never run a race or marathon before? She wants to get something as soon as possible for her training; not sure if a backpack or waist pack would be better. :confused3 I know there are many dedicated runners on this thread. What would you suggest?

TIA. :goodvibes

I was recommended a Nathan 2 Speed belt from the DIS (along with many other great recommendations!). I bought one for $30 (it comes with two bottles and a pack area for a cell phone, keys, gels, whatever) and I love it! It doesn't slide around at all and the bottles stay put. I put water in one and usually Powerade in the other and freeze them the night before a run.

I also have a Nathan Quickdraw hydration bottle. It has a strap for your hand and a little zippered pouch. I was sold this by the guy at the running store ('cause I'm horrible at saying no! :)) and I use it sometimes on my shorter runs (4-6 miles). After that it can get annoying to have to hold it.

I love having the hydration pack especially with this heat/humidity. I feel so much better after drinking some water/Powerade and I've noticed I run a lot better during the second half of my miles with it. I also like that my iTouch fits in the little pack on the hydration belt and if I'm on a desolate road I will play my iTouch without having to wear the headphones (I refuse to wear headphones when I run outside so that usually means running without music unless it's where I wouldn't annoy other people/runners with my iTouch playing on it's speakers).

I also have found it's a lot more comforting having it during races. I always know I can get rehydrated if the water stop is super crowded and I don't have to end up with half a cup of water on me from the little cups.

I have an Amphipod Air Flow Endurance. The pack is definitely bigger than some, but it doesn't feel big. I love that it easily fits my phone, my camera (if I want it), my inhaler, my keys, and a Gu or two. It sometimes takes a bit of maneuvering to get it all in, but it works. It has two bottles that clip to the side, but I think you can go up to 4 bottles, and I have both 8 oz and 10.5 oz bottles to clip on, depending on what I'm running.

Anything from Nathan, Amphipod or Camelbak are state of the sport equipment. This does not mean that the noname item at Sam's Club does not work. Things to look for are how it fits you, your running style and your hydration needs.

Make sure in the store that the belt fits well where you want to wear it. Take a jog and feel the bounce. Imagine the bottles full of water and see if that is annoying. While trying it on see how easily you can grab the bottles from the belt. If they are loose or fall out in the store they will fall out easier when full. If you cannot put the bottle in easily while wearing it, it will be harder on the move.

Many systems look cool in the store but when the rubber meets the running trail you find yourself with little capacity. Understand your hydration needs, the capacity of the system and you can then determine how far that system will get you.

Many Amphipod and Nathan designs are not as conducive to loading ice into the bottles (i.e. the Natahon Spirit or fuel belt). It is not a deal killer but these bottles pick up a lot of radiant heat when in the sun making your fluid warmer than you really wnat - can you say hot gatorade? There are work arounds that include freezing the bottle while half full the night before and topping the bottle off just before the run but if you need a refill then you are at the mercy of the sun again.

Items like the Nathan Quckdraw and others have the advantage of being able to substitute a bike bottle in the device that adds fluid capacity.

There are backpack style systems that can work - but I have issue in the heat with the Camelbak brand. Nathan has a nice backpak system that seems to counterbalance the loading.

Finally do not rule out a bladder style waist pack such as the Camelbak Flashflow. It is a well designed pack that can be almost bounceless. Once you put the belt on and cicnh it up there are a second set of cinch straps that tighten around the bladder eliminating most of the bounce. It has a wide mouth for ice and eas of cleaning and the bag shades the bladder. You can carry lots of stuff - if needed.

What to I use?

I have both an Amphipod and Quickdraw hand held bottle holder. The quickdraw gets most of the work this time of year. It carries about 28 oz of fluid and will get me through a 75-90 minute run.

For longer runs I have a Flashflow. It is a little nerdy but the unit is 8-10 years old. It holds 45 oz of fluid and will get me through a 3 hour run once the temps back off just a bit.

Thanks Kimberly, Megan, and Coach Charles. :worship:

I've passed this great information on to my DD!! :thumbsup2
