A Saturday Night Live skit from the first 5 years of the show that featured Garrett Morris as a prisoner who was auditioning for a musical that the warden was setting up.
I thought that the origins of that song were really interesting. Something to do with a local TV show many years ago that was aired live and on which an elderly white woman who had written many songs was asked to perform. Apparently she came up with the "I'm gonna get me a shotgun..." song right there on the spot (although she wasn't gonna kill all the whities).
I couldn't believe it when Garrett Morris said the origin of that song was the old woman who actually "wrote' and sang the song on tv (this was back in the 50s I believe) only it wasn't whitie...Can you imagine seeing THAT on Tv?
