If you quilify for welfare do you get actual money?

So anyone on government assistance should only eat Hamburger Helper and never get a haircut or save up to treat themselves to a manicure once in a while to feel human. Got it.

Personally, I'd rather my tax dollars go to 98 people who need the help and 2 people who don't than decide that we should stick it to the 2 people defrauding the system and screw over the 98 who need it.

I strongly feel that if all you have to say is something crappy to the OP then skip the thread and move along. You are not so important that we all need to hear your judgment of OP. And I doubt she needs your life advice for what would make her a better person.

Yet, YOU are so important that we all need to hear your judgment of that poster? :confused3

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure if they got cash or not. I was wanting to do something for friends dd and kids for the holidays, but not knowing what you actually get with welfare did not know what might be more helpful. I may do like baby sitting coupons or something like that.

Not going to address the welfare aspect of this question as, personally I think they are all "gripe" sessions about how "I work to support people who refuse to work but get manicures". LOL. Ive never seen a bunch of folks who are so obsessed on how people pay to get their nails done.

I'll address the "gift" part. Gifts imo are things you do from your heart. They are not based on how much money some one gets from some place else. Is your gift going to change if you deem they get more money than necessary?
Then don't give a gift.

Gifts are supposed to be expressions of what or how you thought of a person.

If you would like to help her out then do so , whether or not she needs assistance.

I know there is fraud, I've seen people prosecuted for it. As they should be. I'm also more appalled by the white collar theft that costs our country money, but the facts of those cases are not fun to tell as the story of the welfare mom buying steak and lobster.

I don't think its abuse or fraud per se for a person to buy junk food with their EBT card or lobster. Nor do I think it's abuse or fraud per se if they are driving a nice car or have a cell phone.

I'm also appalled by the number of nosy people who look at what type of card a person uses to pay for groceries. I think it's rude to be eyeing up others' purchases and looking at their payment method.

I'm sure it's possible that you can figure put how a person is paying with about being too intrusive, but I think that's a rare thing. I think all the stories that people have here about what people buy with their EBT card leads me to believe there are a lot of people who have bad manners.

LOL. I think people here make it an occupation. Get your degree in "supermarket snopes". Never have I been anywhere, where so many people check out how folks pay at the supermarket.
I went food shopping this morning. got in line, person ahead of me had a cartful so I knew it was going to be a minute. Read about Orlando Bloom and his supermodel wife breaking up after a long marriage of 3 years. :hyper: I can tell you about Prince Georges christening day. If you offered me 10 million bucks I couldn't begin to tell you how the person in front of me paid for his groceries.

I love the ones where people also know what they brought. "she's on welfare but buying steaks" shame on her!!

I'm am so living wrong because I swear supermarket shopping with the budget board must be like an episode of "Scandal".

A question. Do these cards have some designation saying they are food stamp? I thought they looked like regular ATM cards?

The ones I have seen in Ohio are blue and white in design. Work just like a debit card / credit card.

I wouldn't call it snopeing. Normally just chatting with people in line. Some people are more observant to their surroundings. Plus some cashiers still say your FOOD total is x and X.

Personally find the rags at check just that.

I call eyeing someone's purchases and looking to see what color the card is they are paying with being nosy, even if you happen to overhear what the cashier says.

People should mind their own business. I don't want the person behind me taking stock of what I'm buying and how I'm paying for it. It's rude.

Wow.

Lets start with the news did a report on the new cards designs, there are posters of what the cards looks like. Someone that has one showed me theirs without me asking.

If you would like to call being friendly while i'm stuck in line being nosy fine.

I can also tell you how much they spent if someone says it out loud snap card or not. That's the way my brain works with numbers.

Happen to be very observant. I can also tell you what they look like hours after seeing them.

The icing on this cake is could care less what they are buying as long as they aren't allowing a child to go hungry.

As a taxpayer you should care what they are buying.
As a woman you should care that another mom is buying junk if she can't afford to feed her child normal food.

so forgive me for caring you can call it what ever you want:hug:

I call it bad manners.

So, do you just appraise everyone's groceries then reserve judgment until you check to see what color their card is, or do you wait to you see the tell tale signs of a SNAP card before quickly checking over their groceries to make sure it meets with your approval?

I call it bad manners.

I can't believe all these people have nothing better to do in. The supermarket line than look over at what card someone is using to pay. It had never occurred to me to do that. Staring at people? No way.

I call it bad manners.

I call it irresponsibility to buy junk, if you can't make dinner for your kids at the end of a snap cycle.

Sounds like its ok if Snap kids don't get dinner every night, because its bad manners to question the responsibility of buying junk.

Well, I don't recall anyone saying that white collar fraud isn't wrong, it's just not what the OP was referring to. This thread has gone off on a tangent, it is no longer about the OP.

But no one ever starts threads to rant about it, do they? No one mounts campaigns for office on a platform of getting corporate leeches off the government teat. It is treated as a non-issue most of the time and then deemed a distraction if someone points out that hypocrisy in a conversation like this one.

I call it irresponsibility to buy junk, if you can't make dinner for your kids at the end of a snap cycle.

Sounds like its ok if Snap kids don't get dinner every night, because its bad manners to question the responsibility of buying junk.

But how do you know from the grocery line that this applies to the person in front of you?

I always think of my own shopping habits in these conversations even though we're not on any assistance. I grow most of our produce, shop the local farmer's market (where SNAP recipients get a $20 match to help stretch their funds, BTW), and buy my meat in bulk from a local farmer (who sells through a brick-and-mortar meat market in order to be able to accept SNAP customers). So if you see me at the grocery you'd probably think all I buy is overly processed crap... because that's the only thing I go to the grocery store for. That makes me extremely reluctant to judge what is in someone else's cart, because you don't know if you're seeing the whole picture.

No, sounds like you have to be intruding on everyone's personal space to even determine if they are SNAP.

And after you have determined a person has used snap to buy "junk food" do you then follow out to their car and question them about what they are feeding their kids that night?

You would believe the barter system goes on getting hair and nails done in the hood. You do not need go hair salon getting hair done. They do out there house or projects. I have been welfare and food stamps. I now doing good working as as manager at fast food restaurant now. I seen a lot things living in projects back in the day.Now Do I live Suburbs give my kids a better life.

If I could like this post a thousand times I would. I wish people would mind their own business and not get worked up over something that they have NO real information on (like what people in the grocery store line are buying and what cell phone and car they are using). And the daddy poster that brought up white collar crime was off topic but he brings up a good point those criminals (like Enron) should be much more disturbing to people yet the woman who is getting her hair and nails done makes people see red. I guess I just don't understand these kind of posts.

Your getting all worked up over nothing and making assumptions.

Why so angry with me. You should be angry with person not feeding a child.

I never have or never would tell someone what to buy with snap.

Wow I would never think of following someone around *****ing at them. unless i gave birth to you or you married me:lmao:

Yes I'm annoyed and venting on a message board in cyber space.

What do you care if I judge someone behind their back. Like you never have done that ever ;) kinda like right now :rolleyes2

I don't know if a person is feeding their child or not based on your reporting of their SNAP purchases.

I do know that you are eyeing up people's purchases and looking to see how they pay for them.

That's rude, IMO. That's all I'm saying. I'm not telling you not to judge. I'm not angry.

You're not the only one who snoops on fellow shoppers, so others must be of the opinion that this is acceptable behavior. I'm not one of them. YMMV.

You know it is the idea of scouting out the groceries in front of you enough to judge that there is a bag of fun size snickers and then "observing" how I am paying. Really? Kind if creepy.

I'm an observant person and friendly but I don't keep score and judge.

Frankly if a person buys a box of treats for their kids lunch they can still have enough benefits to make it through the month.

Groceries are personal. Sometimes one has to buy embarrassing items. That's why I always figured its common curtesy to keep one's eyes on one's own stuff.

I don't keep score or judge what people are buying but I do take notice of what is on the conveyor belt in front of me. The magazines don't offer enough distraction for me and only one grocery store near me has TVs in the checkout line.

Sometimes I see someone buying a large quantity of an item and wonder if there was a sale that I missed. Or I'll see an interesting item in their grocery order and make a note to look up how it is prepared when I get home.

When you're in public, everything you do is observable by others. I think that it's naive to believe that people won't notice what you're purchasing. I only consider it to be an act of rudeness if you actually make comments to the person about their grocery order. For goodness sake! What difference does it make what people think as long as they have the good sense to filter their thoughts before they reach their mouths!
