Personally, I'd rather my tax dollars go to 98 people who need the help and 2 people who don't than decide that we should stick it to the 2 people defrauding the system and screw over the 98 who need it.

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure if they got cash or not. I was wanting to do something for friends dd and kids for the holidays, but not knowing what you actually get with welfare did not know what might be more helpful. I may do like baby sitting coupons or something like that.

Not going to address the welfare aspect of this question as, personally I think they are all "gripe" sessions about how "I work to support people who refuse to work but get manicures". LOL. Ive never seen a bunch of folks who are so obsessed on how people pay to get their nails done.

I'll address the "gift" part. Gifts imo are things you do from your heart. They are not based on how much money some one gets from some place else. Is your gift going to change if you deem they get more money than necessary?
Then don't give a gift.

Gifts are supposed to be expressions of what or how you thought of a person.

If you would like to help her out then do so , whether or not she needs assistance.

I know there is fraud, I've seen people prosecuted for it. As they should be. I'm also more appalled by the white collar theft that costs our country money, but the facts of those cases are not fun to tell as the story of the welfare mom buying steak and lobster.

I don't think its abuse or fraud per se for a person to buy junk food with their EBT card or lobster. Nor do I think it's abuse or fraud per se if they are driving a nice car or have a cell phone.

I'm also appalled by the number of nosy people who look at what type of card a person uses to pay for groceries. I think it's rude to be eyeing up others' purchases and looking at their payment method.

I'm sure it's possible that you can figure put how a person is paying with about being too intrusive, but I think that's a rare thing. I think all the stories that people have here about what people buy with their EBT card leads me to believe there are a lot of people who have bad manners.

The ones I have seen in Ohio are blue and white in design. Work just like a debit card / credit card.

I wouldn't call it snopeing. Normally just chatting with people in line. Some people are more observant to their surroundings. Plus some cashiers still say your FOOD total is x and X.

Personally find the rags at check just that.

I call eyeing someone's purchases and looking to see what color the card is they are paying with being nosy, even if you happen to overhear what the cashier says.

People should mind their own business. I don't want the person behind me taking stock of what I'm buying and how I'm paying for it. It's rude.

Well, I don't recall anyone saying that white collar fraud isn't wrong, it's just not what the OP was referring to. This thread has gone off on a tangent, it is no longer about the OP.

But how do you know from the grocery line that this applies to the person in front of you?

I always think of my own shopping habits in these conversations even though we're not on any assistance. I grow most of our produce, shop the local farmer's market (where SNAP recipients get a $20 match to help stretch their funds, BTW), and buy my meat in bulk from a local farmer (who sells through a brick-and-mortar meat market in order to be able to accept SNAP customers). So if you see me at the grocery you'd probably think all I buy is overly processed crap... because that's the only thing I go to the grocery store for. That makes me extremely reluctant to judge what is in someone else's cart, because you don't know if you're seeing the whole picture.

You would believe the barter system goes on getting hair and nails done in the hood. You do not need go hair salon getting hair done. They do out there house or projects. I have been welfare and food stamps. I now doing good working as as manager at fast food restaurant now. I seen a lot things living in projects back in the day.Now Do I live Suburbs give my kids a better life.

If I could like this post a thousand times I would. I wish people would mind their own business and not get worked up over something that they have NO real information on (like what people in the grocery store line are buying and what cell phone and car they are using). And the daddy poster that brought up white collar crime was off topic but he brings up a good point those criminals (like Enron) should be much more disturbing to people yet the woman who is getting her hair and nails done makes people see red. I guess I just don't understand these kind of posts.

Groceries are personal. Sometimes one has to buy embarrassing items. That's why I always figured its common curtesy to keep one's eyes on one's own stuff.

I don't keep score or judge what people are buying but I do take notice of what is on the conveyor belt in front of me. The magazines don't offer enough distraction for me and only one grocery store near me has TVs in the checkout line.

Sometimes I see someone buying a large quantity of an item and wonder if there was a sale that I missed. Or I'll see an interesting item in their grocery order and make a note to look up how it is prepared when I get home.

When you're in public, everything you do is observable by others. I think that it's naive to believe that people won't notice what you're purchasing. I only consider it to be an act of rudeness if you actually make comments to the person about their grocery order. For goodness sake! What difference does it make what people think as long as they have the good sense to filter their thoughts before they reach their mouths!
