If the new X-Pass system comes to be, when might that happen?

It's already in the testing stages, so at least at the MK I don't think it will take too long. Perhaps it'll start there and roll over to the other parks shortly after?

Eventually, I think everything will be scanned for access (resort doors--AoA is already set up for this, refillable mugs, pool access, etc.) and it will take a while for all of the systems to be converted, especially the resort's room doors.

This all sounds cool to me. The sooner the better (as long as it all works perfectly).

I like the idea of the less structured queues, though I think pagers, while not as cost effective, would be a much better implementation.
I'm a big fan of Ambient queues with build-up to the ride itself, and this leaves an incredible amount of potential for that to be improved.
The xPass system on the other hand I don't like the sound of.
Do I really want to structure my entire day around month-early ride reservations?

They did the centralized fastpass experiment at AK over a year ago and nothing ever came of it (yet).

I will boldly predict that NexPass will be widely available by the end of summer...

2014.

I say the start of 2014 - I would hope it gets implemented when the parks have the lowest crowd levels to avoid mass chaos.

Ok, I'm gonna play the dumb one.

I have seen reference to this x-pass and I know it is some type of fast pass but how will it work?

What about the unhelpful details :confused3

Rumored to:

- be available to [everyone | onsite guests | passholders | DVC | people who's first name is [Steve | Ana Maria] ] for [free | [obscene] extra charge]
- allow advance booking of FastPasses up to [0-180] [days | weeks | months | years] in advance
- include [some subset of FP attractions | all existing FP attractions | additional rumored FP attractions | [parade | fireworks] viewing | character M&Gs | any combination]
- [not] conflict with in-park FPs
- [work perfectly | cause problems | collapse under its own weight]
- [be fabulous | outright stink]

That about sums it up.

I read somewhere it will go into effect on October 1st.

They didn't specify the year.

Sometime between October and January 20, 2017 is my guess. Whether this actually even happens, I don't think anyone including Disney knows.

How is it being tested? Are there people being invited to test it on their trips?

The trial was for two weeks in early May. Every report I saw was that testers were approached in the Magical Express queue.
