Particularly this one:
The Dress Me Up Red.
My very first Sparkle. I was a virgin. And now I'm not (oh shoot, can I say that on the DIS? Probably not. Oh well).
My preferred running attire has always been the Athleta Relay Capri.
I looked, of course, EXACTLY like that when I wear them. (you know, except a large belly hanging over the top)
(Karen, look TWO pictures!)
I had tried, in the past several types of other capri's & shorts . The shorts ALWAYS rode up on me and chafed.. leaving me to only use capri's. Which, can be very hot in certain months & for certain distances.
My test run was in a rather stuff gym, on a treadmill- distance- 2 miles.
Style: (out of four stars)
Capri's: Four
Sparkle: Three
This is subjective. And this rating could possible equal with a different style. My capri's are basic black. The sparkle skirt is fire engine run (bought for that color). First thing I did was remove the ribbon. While useful for when I wear this for races/costume, it felt out of place at a gym on a treadmill. The red also seemed out of place at the gym- but then again- it was bought specifically for something in mind. I THINK I would like a less flowey sparkle than this one as that's more my style. But again, I say this all subjectively because I bought this particular sparkle with a purpose in my mind.
Fit:
Capri's: Three
Sparkle: Four
The fit felt good when I put it on. Extremely comfortable. And I liked the fact that it was higher waisted. Allowing some compression on my gut. Anything that can hold that in & make it jiggle less gets good marks from me. These beat out my capri's in this regards. As the capri's are lower waisted making the jiggle wiggle come out more! These were slighly more comfortable than my capri's as well- they felt less restricted.
Wicking:
Capri's: Three
Sparkle: Four
I was also impressed with this skirt in regards to wicking. It breathed easy with my sweat. I definetly feel 'more gross' in my capri's vs. the sparkle. I was especially happy about this in the (TMI?) crotch area. Plus, because it was a skirt, no sweat behind the knees. Sparkle pretty much felt as good taking off as putting on & can't say that about the capri's. Which are heavier and hold more 'sweat in'. Now that you all have that lovey mental picture.
Accessories:
Capri's: Four
Sparkle: Four
For this I give them equal. The large pockets are very nice on the sparkle but I didn't have anything to put in them at the gym. So I can't tell you if the stuff pops out of them. I would have maybe liked to see zippers on them. But perhaps it's not an issue- I won't know until I have a test run with stuff in them. The one zippered pocket it does have is on the front. This was, pehraps, my ONLY regret on this skirt. I have a pouchy stomach. I don't want more... and if I put stuff in that zippered pouch- in the front- I'll have more. My capri's have the zippered pocket in the back & that is my preferred place. Also the capri's have reflective striping on them which helps for night runs. Therefore, when I compare, I put these about equal in the 'accessories' category.
Apples to Oranges
There are some items I can't fairly compare. For example, the riding up. Capri's won't do that. So can't compare. The Sparkles did EXACTLY what they claim- with NO riding. Also, the skirt didn't push between my legs (I had this problem with tutu's I've made in the past for races where I feel like I'm runinng with something between my legs). Sparkle didn't do that. So I was happy (very) with that!
Overall
I liked the Sparkle. Really, my biggest complaint was the front zipper (vs back). This is an excellent alternative for my summer runs and for ToT when it's expected to be hot. I think that I will perhaps invest in a basic black one that has a straighter skirt design. Although I have plans for the red- even outside the costume.....
I will continue to run in my capri's as well. Probably fall/spring runs & cooler races (if I do any).
So now, my friends, what basic, black or grey sparkle is good?
