If I Buy A Small Resale....

If I buy a small resale with the same use year I currently have, would all the points be pooled together - even if I don't buy from disney?

I have a total of 6 BWV contracts (all done through disney) and all the same use year. MS counts these all as one. If I bought a resale with the same use year would it then be included with the rest of my points or would I have to bank separately?

How horrible would it be to have a small contract (say 50) in a different use year? Is it a major inconvenience?

The answer is maybe. Unfortunately, DVC does not always link new contracts. It is their intention to link them if they are the same use year but sometimes they miss out. Put your account number and wish to link them into your contract. Remind them at every turn including putting a letter in with the transfer information and the $100 check. I've done it once this way with NO problems.

Dean I am confused. We purchased a resale of OKW and added on 25 points from Disney for SSR. Where does the $100.00 come in or from.

A resale transaction involves a $100 "Disney Transfer Fee."

Whether it is the buyer or seller who actually pays the fee will be determined in the negotiation.

When we sold an add-on last fall, we paid the fee as the seller, and I got the impression that this was pretty standard but, like I said, everything is negotiable.

We have bought add-ons from Disney and resale. All are the same use year at BWV and all are considered one contract when we book. We never had any problems. The seller paid the transfer fee on our resale. The transfer went off without a hitch.
Regarding a small add-on with a different use year:
It makes bookkeeping more complex. I like having a single use year for administering points. But my brain isn't what it used to be!!

I can tell you I asked Member Admin directly about this issue. Their instructions were that usually they do this but not always. I got the direct impression it was their goal but they sometimes didn't reallize and assigned a new member number. Once they have it set, they will not change it. So I'd make sure I let them know at every step possible if you want them linked.

If I bought an add on with a different use year and I wanted to make a reservation I would not be able to combine points right? Even if they are for the same resort?

I would have to have enough points in my add on for a whole night then correct? Say I had 20 points in my add on left and I wanted to book a one bedroom for 22 points. I would have to borrow the 2 points from that same contract, I would not be able to take two from my main (larger) contract?

zurgswife can answer you better, because she's done it, but I asked that question, and I think this was the answer. If you give MS a day or two's notice to transfer the points from one account to the other, same home resort, you can combine the points from the 2 contracts.

There are two issues relating to the transfer method for this situation. First is that MS has significant latitude when dealing wth multiple contracts of a single owner. They will in certain situations transfer banked or borrowed points contrary to the written rules. This is only applicable in two situations I can think of. The first is when you need points from both contracts to make a reservation for a single night. If it's for multiple nights, they can simply make the reservation and link them. But sometimes you have those few stragling points and need to have a few more to round it off. The other is for exchanges that require the points to be in a single contract. This happens with things like the CC and definitely for the Advernturer Collection as well as DCL for most reservations. I know for certain one can transfer banked and borrowed points in this situation though many times the front line CM aren’t aware of it. If you get one that tells you that it can’t be done, simply ask for a supervisor, ask them to check with one or call back and speak to a different CM.

The 11 and 7 month windows still apply so this cannot be used to get around that issue. However, there is a related issue that can currently be confusing and either harmful or helpful depending on specifics. The DVC computers are not currently set up to track home resort of transferred points. That means if you transfer points in, they essentially become the same as YOUR home resort. MS can work around this manually but you must force them to do so at times and if you’re planning on using the home resort of the transferred points, I’d make that CLEAR up front. It also means it’s possible to abuse the system by transferring in cheaper, lower demand resort points for higher ones. DVC is apparently working on the fix but who knows when or even if it’ll every be corrected. I know it’s different that what the legal paperwork says but believe me, it’s the way it was as recently as 2 months ago and I’ve heard nothing that suggests it’s changed.

I was aware that this was the case but it never really effected me as I only had one home. Does anyone know what happens if you have more than one home? Does it go to the "masters" home?

As I understand it, you can specify which contract. Even though the add ons and linked contracts are treated in many ways as one, they are all technically separate. If one didn't specify it would be the luck of the draw and I SUSPECT it would be the master contract that would get transferred points.
