If Disney does't get rid of that darn Tommorrowland Speedway...

For the life of me I can't understand why this "ride" is still active. Don't get me wrong, it was probably very cool in its heyday. But now...talk about DATED!

I've been hearing rumors of Cars coming to one of the parks. I think this would the perfect place for an attraction like that. Or just simply update the cars that or on the track. Make them more modern and a little bit faster.

One of my children's favorite rides. THey are 8 and 3. THat's why I like WDW, there's something for everyone. ;) Since there has always been a line every time we have gone I tend to think others like it as well.

THIS is what I was referring to. I hope JIMMYV read this.

I did. And I think many of those ideas would be great....for Test Track. But I have a hard time devining what enjoyment a little kid would get out of a collision avoidance system. I am not at all convinced that when the Grand Prix Raceway was put in in 1971 that there was any grandiose or poetic homage to the future of the interstate highway system as 626 suggests. The system was already well in place by that time. Perhaps this was more the theme of the Autopia in Disneyland. But at WDW, the Grand Prix Raceway was, for the most part, a kid's ride that simulated Indy Car racing. If the ride becomes too complex or too fast, then there will be a different height restriction, and before you know it, little kids will be headed back to Dumbo. Again, there is no question that a high tech ride could replace the Speedway and 17 year old boys will rejoice. But is that the goal?

Back in June, 13yo DD & I rode together in the same car one night about 2AM in the morning and enjoyed it so much we rode it a couple of more times, it was the first time we had been on it since she was about 4 or 5.

Personally I'd like to see them get rid of Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, & BTMRR, I don't care for them and they take up a lot of space :)

Yeah, not a fan here either! And since we go during the summer, it's got to be the HOTTEST wait for a ride in all the parks. We really try hard to skip it! I don't even know if we'd do it even if it changed to a Cars theme!

It is ancient. I like riding it but come on, it's definitely time for an upgrade.

I wouldn't mind if they updated it, but I LOVED this ride when I was a child! I think changing it to a Cars theme sounds like a great idea:thumbsup2

My 4yr old loves it too. He will be turning 5 in Nov and still talks about that ride. We did keep bumping back and forth into the track (because he was driving) but he thought it was hilarious. When we got off I told him I thought he was a crazy driver so he cant wait to take me for a "crazy ride" again.

Ever since the Cars movie came out in 2006 I have said it would be an easy switch for Disney to make, but if they do that then they have to do something with the queue - the lines are already too long in the hot sun. And I am not talking about the useless "shades" they have in the Dumbo line either.

It can be improved. It is boring for about 90% of people. That said, the basic concept is sound. You just have to figure out how to do it right.

My 8 year old hated it. He was excited until he actually tried to drive the car. Afterwards, he said it was a complete waste of his time.

:thumbsup2 mine to. They have gocarts and wheelers. When they started about turn two, he said "this is it?" "this sucks" LOL To slow, its boring sorry. Time to move on.

When we went last time, my now 6 yr old (then 4 yrs old) hated it, and LOVED TEST TRACK!

Where did you read that its not supposed to be the Toy Story Buzz?
Don't have to read it. Just have to pay attention to what you see in the ride. I see no evidence at all that this character is the toy Buzz Lightyear, and lots to support that idea that he is supposed to be the "actual" space ranger upon whom said toy is based.
Anyways, while we're throwing things out we might as well throw out Monsters Inc. That has no place in Tomorrowland. Unless you want to try to use the "but its sci-fi!" excuse.. which I don't buy, personally.
It's definitely a more difficult fit, but truthfully that's been true of every single attraction that has ever been housed in that building. Yes, even "Timekeeper." The sci-fi one could extrapolate must somewhere be buried in Monsters, Inc. makes at least as much sense as that in Timekeeper -- it's just that the latter (time travel) is a more readily recognized sci-fi trope (and is used in a more straightforward manner) than the unusual alternative energy sources and multiple-dimension ideas at work in Monsters Inc. and, by extension, The Laugh Floor. Plus, I like it. At least I finally get to sit down in that building! But the sci-fi in Timekeeper is science-fantasy, and as such is no more off-base, really, than The Laugh Floor. And both fit better than Magic Carpet Around the World.
And with the Disney trend lately they'd replace it with a Cars meet & greet (like they have at DHS), another store, and call it a day.
I don't see the trend you mention. Can you tell me another ride/attraction in the last five years (or the next couple of years) that has been removed and replaced by the sort of thing you mentioned? The closest I can think of is the Snow White ride in Fantasyland, but they're replacing that with another ride, just not in the same building. And anyway, I don't believe in avoiding action because something bad might happen as a result. It's always going to be possible that something bad might happen, but living in fear of it leads to stagnation. Courage is a response to fear, not the lack of it. Plus, I don't believe it is fair or valid to blame someone for something you imagine they might do, and then to behave as if they did do it.

They probably wouldn't. They'd like it for the same reason they like it now -- they could drive a car. Maybe some adults would find interest in the collision-avoidance idea. And both would likely appreciate that center rail being removed.

And when I say make it faster, I don't mean to turn it into a full-tilt thrill ride. But as it is now, it's frustratingly slow. Just speed it up a little. That would make the line move faster as well.

Let me ask this question of those who think the ride is fine the way it is ... If it weren't there and never had been, and Disney came in and built it pretty much as it currently stands as a brand new attraction, what would you think of it?

An aside: It always amazes me when some Disney fans cite "it doesn't fit the theme" to justify their contention that an attraction they don't like should be removed or replaced. Often, under those circumstances, "it doesn't fit the theme" is invoked as if it trumps all other arguments. And yet, when the attraction is something those people like, or feel nostalgic toward, some of those same people will bend over backwards to argue that it does fit the theme in some bizarre, convoluted way or that it doesn't matter because the ride is a classic and kids love it. It's okay to feel either way, really, but I wish people would be consistent. I'm not accusing anyone in this thread of that, by the way, just noting that I see it a lot!

I've never been a fan of the speedway. It looks old and outdated and it takes up alot of room that I think can be better used for a different attraction.

IMO not everything needs to be themed from an animated movie. There are so many additional ways to do imagineering.

Agree! I thought monster's inc. was a natural, fitting element into tomorrowland, but radiator springs? Nothing "tomorrow" at all about that town!
I, for one, love the cars, always have, but I do agree that the fumes are nauseating. Maybe an update to the cars to make them more fuel-efficient? That seems very "tomorrowish", especially since Disney has been pushing a conservation message for years.

Just a thought here, but it is possible that it is located in Tomorrowland only because there was no way to put it in Fantasyland because it's size would throw off the balance.

It doesn't matter anyway. It's fun for small kids and they are as important as any adult that finds it lame. And just for the record an adult should find it lame. That's what growing up does to you.

The next thing we will hear is...I walked into Tomorrowland and there was the Raceway, it didn't belong there and it ruined my whole vacation. I want my money refunded for I am indeed traumatized.

Wow - so much hate AND love. popcorn::

Our kids love it. I'd hate to see it go, but a Cars theme would be very cool. Fits much better than the NASCAR or Indycar themes.

:thumbsup2
