I love credit cards so much!

Well it's sooner than I thought bit I think I need some advice. Apparently we need to buy a new Apple laptop very soon. DH says roughly $2500. The MSRs on DH's Chase double dip (July of 2018) are pretty much taken care of (or will be in a week or two). So, where do we go from here? I was thinking I'd come up with our goals/travel thoughts etc. and then ask for help. But now I'm in a hurry. I was also hoping to work up a plan for a "business" but again, wasn't expecting to need something so soon. Or should we just put it on the AMEX for the purchase protection?

Anyone care to help?

ETA - DH wants to buy it from work (discount) and isn't sure he can use a card with my name on it. Fun times. I was thinking we should try to get that 100K AMEX personal deal (which I know is a long shot)

I think you have a few issues you need to work through:

- DH double dipped only about a month ago, so going back to Chase for another card so soon might raise some flags.

- DH could refer you to do your own CSR+CSP double dip, which you’ve mentioned before, but you also expressed some hesitancy applying in your own name because you’re a homemaker. (We’ve told you that’s perfectly fine because you can put down total household income — essentially your husband’s income on your application, and there are several SAHM, full time parents, and household managers on this thread who have been approved for numerous cards successfully.)

- You both aren’t entirely comfortable applying for business cards, which is okay but limits your options.

- Your husband wants to buy the MacBook through work for a discount. How big is the discount when compared to Apple’s student discount, and other possible deals from retailers? (Not sure if B&H has started charging out-of-state tax following SCOTUS’s ruling in Quill.)

- Even if DH were to refer you for your own card(s), he’s not sure you can put it on your card. So you getting new cards might be premature if you can’t put that big spend on it, and it may be too soon for DH to get another personal card.

We seem to have found a work around (temporarily) that can buy us a bit of time (but not months). I'm ok with opening cards in my name. I agree he can't get another Chase card right now, but I guess I can. He can partially stack the student/work discounts right now (through Sept.) and thinks that he can probably use a card with my name on it. Agree that another double dip might be too much spending in the next 3 months, which is why I'm wondering if AMEX P is a better option for me (but I am an AU on his card right now). Sorry if I am not posting in a clear way - I wasn't prepared for this tonight. I wanted to come up with a long term plan, not jump into something in the next day or two. Also with us traveling soon I think it might have to wait until we get back (but then we have the issue of getting the laptop for my DD before she heads back to school). The timing stinks since we weren't prepared for this and we are not ready to open a business card yet. I want to thank you for trying to help me.

ETA- I was looking at the AMEX because the 5K MSR is better. The downside to me is that I don't think we can combine the points. Is there a referral we can use (from our current card) to get more MRs?

Wait.

- Are you under 5/24, or are you at or over 5/24?

- Are you asking if the Chase Marriott card will get you 10% off British Airways flights?

- Have you been reading The Points Guy to decide which cards to get?

- What cards do you have, when did you open them, and what are your travel plans or goals?
I am still under the 5/24. I have 3 Chase cards but they were opened years ago before I knew anything about travel hacking (Amazon card, GM card, Disney card). DH just got the Marriott card last month and made me an AU.

Yes, the points guy, who I’ve been reading for general research, said some of his readers have gotten the 10% off BA flights using Chase cards other than the BA card. I wondered if anyone on this thread has been able to get the 10% off with other Chase cards. Maybe one I already have will work or maybe I really need to get the BA card.

My travel plans include 4 multi city tickets for July 2019 from Washington DC to London to Johannesburg to Washington DC. I priced them out for this summer to get an idea of costs and it looks like they will cost anywhere from $1000 to $1800 pet ticket. I won’t be able to rack up the cc points in time to get all these tickets free, but I’d like to get the best deal possible. So I’m looking at options - various discounts, paying with a combination of cash and points, etc.

If you have any suggestions, I’m all ears!

If you can pull the 100k MR/$5k offer on the personal Amex Platinum using CardMatch or Amex’s Pre-Qualified offers, that would justify using a slot under 5/24 to get this card. Remember, if you manage to pull it up, apply! You might not get the chance again.

Alternatively, a 75k MR/$5k offer on the personal Platinum is fairly easy to pull up using incognito mode. It’s not as great as the 100k MR offer, but better than the public 60k MR offer.

Being an AU on DH’s Platinum card does not disqualify you from getting a welcome bonus on your own Platinum card. But you’re right, you won’t be able to combine your MRs with DH’s MRs. As for the $175 fee your DH is paying for additional cards on his Platinum, that fee covers 3 additional cardholders and I understand he’s paying for DD’s card even if you weren’t an AU, so you may as well remain an AU since the primary card is several years old and being an AU doesn’t affect your 5/24 status at this point, and you might get some good Amex Offers on that AU card.

Thanks. I guess we'll try and see what we get. And yes, DD is also an AU on his card so we'd be keeping both anyway. Thanks for the info. I'll talk it over with him when he's awake. I just hate to see that much money get spent without any kind of a bonus.

I think I found the TPG article you were referring to, and I suppose you could try to use the code on your bookings.

Two things:

- When DH added you as an AU to his new Marriott card, that added an account opened within the last 24 months to your credit report. Chase’s automated approval system does not distinguish between primary accounts in your own name from authorized user accounts on which you are only an AU.

- When TPG says a card like the BA is not subject to the 5/24 rule, it means you don’t have to be under 5/24 to apply, but it will still count as another card opened within the last 24 months and add to your */24 count.

What would happen if I made a Disney room deposit on my CSR, earned the $300 travel credit and also had some of those funds count towards the MSR and then months later I decide I want a different reservation and I cancel my original reservation and the deposit is refunded? I plan on exceeding the $4,000 to have a cushion, but I do not want to jeopardize the travel credit and bonus points.

thank you! This makes me feel a lot better for not going!! I kept thinking about it...at 2:40, I had just gotten home from running errands and I was like, 'ok, I could dash over there and be there at 3. DD15 doesn't have to be at dance until 4 but DD18 could take her if I text her and ask her to come home in time. I can just haul the boys with me...' In the end, it all just felt like too much hassle, and now, it sounds like I would have been disappointed if I had gone to all the effort. And not even any pretzels!?! What!??

ETA: I do get the person in the comments who says it's up in the mountains, or something like that...this venue is not 'Denver'...Red Rocks is the most gorgeous of places but it's on the far, very far, western outskirts of Denver suburbia. For about 90% of the Denver metro area, it's a pretty far drive. I'm still surprised they held their 'event' there.

I am definitely thinking I will apply for the SPG biz for me :) Can someone please remind me of the deadline? I have 8/18 and 8/26 in my head...I am holding off as long as I can comfortably do so b/c I am still working on the Amex BBP (2.3k left) and the Marriott biz that I have not even received yet (3k).

Here’s another report: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/95vgz5/comment/e3wmip9?st=JKNQM32O&sh=60e678f9

If you want the SPG Biz, apply before 8/26/18.

The 100k Marriott points offer on the SPG Biz expires on 10/31/18.

HOWEVER, since you just got the Marriott Biz, you will be disqualified from the SPG Biz on and after 8/26/18 if you currently have or have had the Marriott Biz in the last 30 days.

Per r/churning, some guy “confirmed with an [Amex customer service representative] that as long as you apply and are approved (and of course never had the specific SPG card), you are eligible for the welcome bonus for the SPG Biz or personal. ‘As long as you have never had the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card before. apply and are approved before August 26th, you would be eligible for any current offer.’”

HAHA - thanks guys! I'm doing ok in the fake internet points dept ;) but I appreciate it anyways. I think on last check I'm at around 1,500 r/churning karma.

Obviously I was more commenting on the ridiculousness that is r/churning. Luckily we only have a like button around here - and I use it liberally :D
I been so busy I work I haven’t had a chance to go back and check. What happened to the referral links? Did they decide to keep doing referral threads?

Its on my radar also!

Good Morning .....
The next card I’m applying for is the CSR....plan was to apply 8/16...since I opened the CIP on 5/15....

do you think I’m ok to apply today ? Pretty much met the spend on my husbands CIP onpned the end of June and looking at about $1,000 in spend Tuesday or Wednesday next week

I’m at 3/24 and at 23% of household income with Chase(personal and business cards)..my other cards are

Chase Disney...received first day they offered it years ago
Chase SW Plus 7/16/16..going to call for a retention offer after my points post with the 8/15/18 statement...will keep either way...may upgrade in Sept to the new SW Priority card
Chase Disney 1/18/17...now closed
Jared 5/5/17 ..now .closed
Chase SW Premier 9/27/17...will close in October after points post
Chase SW business 9/27/17...will close in October after points post
CIP 5/15/18

Willing to wait until 8/16 and put the $1,000 on a CIP if you all think I should ....Thanks :)

Ok, next question :teeth:

What do you guys mean by "double dipping"?

It’s when you apply for two cards CSR and CSP on the same day to work around Chases one Saphire card rule...
You start early on a weekday...and apply for the card you would like first...if it’s not auto approved you call Chase to get it approved.
Once you get in approved..you apply for the second card using a different device or in incognito ....if it’s not auto approved you call in to get it approved..mentioning only that card
