Well it's sooner than I thought bit I think I need some advice. Apparently we need to buy a new Apple laptop very soon. DH says roughly $2500. The MSRs on DH's Chase double dip (July of 2018) are pretty much taken care of (or will be in a week or two). So, where do we go from here? I was thinking I'd come up with our goals/travel thoughts etc. and then ask for help. But now I'm in a hurry. I was also hoping to work up a plan for a "business" but again, wasn't expecting to need something so soon. Or should we just put it on the AMEX for the purchase protection?
Anyone care to help?
ETA - DH wants to buy it from work (discount) and isn't sure he can use a card with my name on it. Fun times. I was thinking we should try to get that 100K AMEX personal deal (which I know is a long shot)
I think you have a few issues you need to work through:
- DH double dipped only about a month ago, so going back to Chase for another card so soon might raise some flags.
- DH could refer you to do your own CSR+CSP double dip, which you’ve mentioned before, but you also expressed some hesitancy applying in your own name because you’re a homemaker. (We’ve told you that’s perfectly fine because you can put down total household income — essentially your husband’s income on your application, and there are several SAHM, full time parents, and household managers on this thread who have been approved for numerous cards successfully.)
- You both aren’t entirely comfortable applying for business cards, which is okay but limits your options.
- Your husband wants to buy the MacBook through work for a discount. How big is the discount when compared to Apple’s student discount, and other possible deals from retailers? (Not sure if B&H has started charging out-of-state tax following SCOTUS’s ruling in Quill.)
- Even if DH were to refer you for your own card(s), he’s not sure you can put it on your card. So you getting new cards might be premature if you can’t put that big spend on it, and it may be too soon for DH to get another personal card.
