I love credit cards so much!

Welcome! Wow - you've done some homework :) You definitely speak the lingo well.

If you alternate applications you can refer each other (hello more points!) and you look less "risky" to CC companies since you are each applying at a slower pace. CC companies will only analyze you separately, they don't look at a married couple as a join unit :) I would take him off as an AU on any cards you got in the past year or so. Do you know how many cards he has gotten himself in the past 24 months?

WHOA!!! I can refer my husband??? Mind blown!!! (Yes, I'm a newbie.)

The new Marriott consumer card is supposed to be released tomorrow. The rumor is it'll have a 100k signup bonus, with the option for existing Marriott cardholders to upgrade for a bonus. Speculation is Chase will have a one-Marriott card rule so you can't get the new card if you have the old card.

Is that for personal Marriotts only, or will Marriott biz count too? Wonder how long that offer is around... probably need to cool it on Chase until about September/October.

My guess is one personal Marriott card only, similar to the new one personal SW card rule. Chase has always treated business and consumer cards differently, and I believe the two are underwritten by different departments.

Here's today's /r/churning discussion on it: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/8gg9jx/daily_discussion_thread_may_02_2018/dybkbsh

Hey, we have $127k! :) I can't wait to teach our future children about money. I've got some friends like that too. Late 20s now. Or at least they were, but we haven't discussed that stuff lately now. A few years ago my friend and I planned a trip to London and Paris, starting a year out. I ended up spending $4k for a 12 day trip, with splitting the hotel room. I had estimated things out and shared it with her, and made myself a savings goal of $5k for anything unexpected. She bought a few more gifts than me but otherwise her spending during the trip was about the same, I'm not sure what she spent on things for the trip because we lived in different states at the time. She lived at home and her only monthly bills were $200 to her parents for her share of phone bill and insurance, and her $150 car payment, and she worked full time. So when I visited her a few weeks before our trip for some last minute planning, I was shocked when she told me that she had refinanced her car loan and added $2k or something to it to pay for the rest of the trip. And on the trip, the hotel was going to split the charge between our cards for us, and hers got declined for the $700, so I paid and she transferred me the money. Same with our flights, which were $1800. But hey, I had my new Barclay Arrival and got to earn 2x points on that stuff! That was my first travel card and I felt so fancy :rotfl:

We're in the same age group, and I find it so interesting to look around at my friends and see this type of behavior as well. I have a SIGNIFICANT amount of student loan debt as well as a very expensive hobby, yet somehow DH and I and one other couple are the only one in our friend groups who seem to be able to manage our bills. I really don't say that to sound snarky or judgmental, but I have friends like you describe and I really have to wonder what the difference is between us.

On another note, now that I've started churning, I look around and wonder what other great secrets I'm missing that could be right in front of my face... All these years I've just been using the same BoA card without knowing this was something I can be involved in. It makes you wonder what else you're missing out on money saving-wise or otherwise!

That won't apply if it's been a few years since you have closed one, correct?

I signed DH up for the offer when it was first announced and it doesn't show up in his My Offers tab either. He just stayed at a Garden Inn last night, too. I just re-signed up now to be on the safe side, and it still isn't showing under My Offers. It will take a few days before last night's stay will be added to the site. I'll let you know if he gets the points. He'll be making a phone call if he doesn't. I find these Hilton offer sign ups to be extremely confusing. There are usually separate landing pages specifically for the offers that I can't find on the Honors site. I have to click through DoC or some other blog to access them.

Yeah I didn't see it anywhere on the site but I had found the link last week by searching. I only got the 2000 points ad on the Hilton site like a week or two before it expired, I think I registered when the ad popped up on a travel site I was visiting. Just today it was advertised on the DIS banner so I clicked it again and registered for giggles and kicks but I like a little confirmation. I thought hotel programs used to be easy to navigate but all of them keep making weird changes to the sites and where or how you find stuff. I'm starting to think it's on purpose so you don't actually sign up or use anything. (We have this awesome, award winning, loyalty program... just click here 32 times to find it and another 24 times over here to use it... don't worry that it doesn't actually show you're registered just trust us)

Not sure if the new Marriott consumer card will have a 24-month bonus restriction like the new one-SW card rule. If you received a bonus on a prior Marriott consumer card more than 24 months ago and that card is now closed, I'd bet you'll be fine applying for the new Marriott personal card.

WHOA!!! I can refer my husband??? Mind blown!!! (Yes, I'm a newbie.)
Yeah!! Pretty exciting huh?

The two reasons we love 2 player mode around here:
1) referring each other = extra points
2) alternating applications so that you each apply for less cards each year keeping the bank happy :)

If you’re comfortable with CIP, I’d start with 2 of them about 2-3 months apart. I’d assume the $5k spend would keep you busy awhile! Hitting those big spends first is great because it keeps your pace slow.

After that we will recommend you look at CSR/CSP (and potentially double dip both cards at once) for max earnings :)

Last year you mean on a card other than CIP right? :)

Yes it was a SW business card....I applyed for the personal and business at the end of the year to get 2 years out of the companion pass....2018 & 2019

Not churning but budget board related. I'm enjoying my free IKEA lunch of Swedish meatballs before I go use the $15 off $15 or more coupon I got. Both are for my birthday and from being in their free family thing that gives you better pricing.

I'll probably get some more of their packing cubes, they're nice and a great price. 2 1/2 weeks til we leave for Paris!

We just got back from Paris - it was magical to me! I'd never been anywhere in Europe and we absolutely loved it!

So a bit :offtopic: but I’m stressing out because my rental property needs a new roof. Best estimate I have is $3600. Long story, but the property is rented for the amount I pay in taxes and insurance, I don’t make a profit at all, so a new roof is a losing proposition. I’d did think about the option of buying the shingles myself, but the property is 25 miles from me and I can only get there on weekends, plus physically getting the shingles there is a pain. So to the point, if I got a new card would the 3% the contractor will charge for a cc worth it if I’m meeting MSR?

God forbid I try BB&B and get accused of a federal crime.
I know! I was considering trying, until the few that did posted their stories and everything they went through - no way! I couldn't handle that. One time I got accused of shoplifting by some crazy woman and I immediately burst into tears. Nerves of steel, I have.

This is how my mom's boyfriend is... and he's a multi millionaire. He won't let things get shut off, but he'll be late on stuff and just not care. I remember he and my mom were shopping somewhere like Lowe's or Home Depot one time and were purchasing a large appliance where it would benefit them to have the store card. He was denied for it, but my mom was approved--and I can promise you that she is NOT a millionaire!! My mom has offered many times to take over paying his bills for him since she's very good at that kind of stuff, but he just keeps doing what he's doing.
At least he just doesn't care? :confused3 Haha. I think my dad is just really bad about money and living above his means. He cares too much about other people and looking rich, but he's also cheap about stuff - not frugal, but cheap where he skimps on stuff and it costs more in the long run. But he speaks with such authority on everything. You probably saw my mention of the family drama on my wedding TR and how we haven't gotten along, the big trigger to that was money. Our relationship had gotten strained and uncomfortable anyways, and then I uncovered lots of lies about money and came to the realization that (I'm pretty confident) he was expecting me to bankroll him the rest of his life. At my expense personally, professionally, financially, mentally, etc. :sad2: I found a reddit board to vent about him on.

I know just what you mean! DH's friend tells him he doesn't understand because he's in a two income situation now, and the friend isn't. I understand that makes a difference, but the biggest thing is friend dumps ALL money into his expensive hobby, before he buys food/pays bills. You can do both! Other things we've heard: I know I could make a mortgage payment because I can pay my rent, I just can't save a down payment! Or, I had some extra cash, so I put it towards my student loans - so I don't have to pay them for a few months! (instead of paying them down...)

On another note, now that I've started churning, I look around and wonder what other great secrets I'm missing that could be right in front of my face... I look at that trip now and think, that $4k could have gone towards a minimum spend!

many contractors here, i order it online at HD or Lowes, the contractors would go pick them up there. See if your contractor will do that or not.

I think you're totally right about that!
Here's how I was able to sign up on the Honors site today:
Log in - View Promotions (still says I'm not signed up for anything) - My Available Offers tab - "More Details" button on 2x package image - "Sign Up Now" link on left side of page - Log in again - It now says I'm registered

You don't have a CIP right? That's the most obvious card for your situation.

The CIP has a $5k MSR/3 months for 80k UR.

Will your contractor take a check or P2P payment via Venmo instead?

The CIP earns 3x UR on Plastiq (2.5% fee) and Venmo (3% fee), thus negating (and even putting you ahead of) the fee.

So for example, the contractor invoices you $3,600.

Via Plastiq, you would set up a payment to your contractor for $3,600, incur a 2.5% fee of $90, and a check is delivered to your contractor in 7-10 days. However, because payments and fees on Plastiq currently earn 3x UR when charged to the CIP, you'll earn 3x $3,690 or 11,070 UR points worth $110.70 in cash (as a statement credit or bank deposit) or $138.37 when redeemed for travel on the CSP or CIP (and as much as $166.05 if you transfer the points to a CSR and redeem them through the UR Portal).

ETA: If you're new to Plastiq and you sign up using a DISchurner link, you can earn $500 fee free dollars ("FFD") after you've made your first $500 or more payment. That means the second time you use Plastiq, they'll waive the fee on $500 of your next payment (worth $12.50).

Via Venmo, your contractor gets paid $3,600 instantly and you eat the 3% ($108) fee. However, since Venmo earns 3x UR on fees and payments when charged to the CIP, you're looking at 3x $3,708 or 11,124 UR points worth $111.24 in cash, or $139.05 in travel redeemed on a CSP/CIP, or $166.86 in travel redeemed on a CSR.

The CIP's signup bonus of 80,000 UR points is $800 in cash, or $1,000 in travel redeemed on a CSP/CIP, or $1,200 in travel redeemed on a CSR.

We just got back from Paris - it was magical to me! I'd never been anywhere in Europe and we absolutely loved it!

Glad you had a great trip! It's my first trip to Europe too and neither of us have been to Paris. Anything we should know? We're doing 4 nights at DLP and 3 in Paris. We have figures out what we want to see but no clues on food really. Any place we have to try?

Growing up we would occasionally have electricity, cable, phones shut off for a few hours when my dad forgot to pay the bills. He was in charge of all of the finances. When I got out of college and moved home for a bit, I started seeing the cell phone bills... he was always 3 months behind, and when shut off day would roll around he'd call up and pay one month plus the late fee to keep it from being shut off. My family wasn't hard up or anything, there was really no sensible reason for that. That was when I stopped listening to my dad for financial advice and hit the internet.

Wow! Idk if I would have trusted my friend to pay me back for the trip. my friends seem to be pretty irresponsible with their cards. The ones that live at home and have their parents pay for everything seem to be the ones with the maxed cards.

My parents are pretty financially savvy. I don’t remember them ever teaching me about finances though. My dad is proud of his 800+ credit score and when he found i how many cards I have been applying to he freaked. I showed him my score increase over time, but he doesn’t want to hear about it. He also thinks my financial independence retire early goals are ridiculous lol
