Got some good news on my Chase shutdown today. Conversation went something like this:

Chase case agent: We've done some research and we found the affiliate that closed your account was a Chase bank closed your checking and savings accounts on May 12, 2013.
Me: What? I didn't have a Chase checking and savings account in 2013, as I opened my first Chase banking account in 2017.
Chase case agent: These accounts were opened in a Florida branch.
Me: What? I am not a Florida resident, as I have lived in Texas all of my adult life and sure didn't open any accounts while there on vacation.
Chase case agent: Do you mind if I put you on a brief hold?
Chase case agent: I have requested your account to be re-reviewed, as it appears these accounts do not belong to you. We will be in touch with our findings.

I feel SO much better after this conversation. Don't know why these accounts were closed or associated with my name, but it doesn't matter if they get this cleared up. I have been worrying about this for a few weeks, as our vacation plans were going to feel the impact of being forced into 1 player mode. Hopefully, this will all be resolved soon.

I don't want to put the cart in front of the horse, but I think the next conversation should be that they are going to reopen my CIP and what they are going to do about my MSR. I would have already met if my account hadn't been closed for 4 weeks. At a minimum, I expect them to extend the time line to meet, but it seems reasonable they should waive all or part of it, or at least give me some sort of UR compensation for this mix-up. Is that going too far?

your shutdown is still getting even more mysterious than it is now. if your affiliate closed your "checking and savings" account, why didnt it shut down all of them at once?
Thanks for the update though! we are all rooting for your CIP to be reopened!

fyi, i have shared your story with FlyerTalk, are u okay if i share it even further?

Wow! What a colossal screw up on their part. I hope they give you lots of URs for the hassle and angst.

Phew! I had seen that one of the reasons for your kind of shutdown was mistaken identity. That seemed the simplest reason to get around, and I'm glad it sounds like that's it! (Should I be relieved that Chase mistook someone else's accounts for yours? :sad2:) Hopefully everything gets cleared up soon!

Agreed, it makes no sense they only closed my CIP and not the personal credit cards.

Sure, you can go ahead and share on FlyerTalk. What's scary is there is nothing I could have done to prevent this and it could happen to anyone at any given time, although not likely. As Lain said, it seems strange to be relieved that a financial institution screwed up on mistaken identity.

Thanks! I'm starting a sticky note for pre-cruise Vancouver hotels to look at. I can use my SPG "free" night at that one so it's on the list to check out now :)
Which sailing? I may have booked pre & post cruise hotels already. And flights for our arrival flights opened today so they are on hold now :rolleyes1
No backup plan yet. The big problem is with traveling with my Mom and Daughter I will have to handle all the bags ect so DME was looking really good this trip. I might just have to sit outside the door and play on the iPad. :rotfl2:
One night at a WDW resort will get you on DME with new MagicBands. Then you can transfer via Uber to another hotel of your choosing.

Me either :( That is just such a poor use of points.
Honestly I think Swolphin was way undervalued. They are in a premium location with Disney’s deluxe resorts, walking distance to 2 parks. Minus the theming I think they are deluxe level resorts in Disney speak. The deluxe resorts are way more $ than Swolphin has been which is why our last trip was 1 night deluxe and 3 nights Dolphin. I am disappointed they went up though. Glad I’m booked for 2019 already.

Is there a place with a quick and easy summary of which card we should use for which kind of expense? In terms of benefits/points? Or any other factor.

I see that CSR has the PP lounges, but with our AMEX we already have access, plus the Centurion lounges. And our upcoming flights are all in BC, so hopefully the international lounges will kick in for this trip. Anything else I should take advantage of? I can put a few hotel nights on one of these, but my other hotel was booked through FHR so I have to use the AMEX to pay for that one.

CONGRATULATIONS!

:cheer2::banana:party:party::cool1:pixiedust:

Yes, that's it.

Assuming you double dipped the two Sapphire cards, Chase will likely expedite the CSR to you on their own, and the CSP will arrive a few days later via snail mail.

You might have caught some of today's discussion about this. There have been some reports from people who recently double dipped two of Chase's cards successfully, who receive a call or notice about a week later that Chase lowered the credit limits on both newly-approved cards. We figure this is because the automated system approves each card and assigns a credit line to that card independently, but when an applicant double dips two cards then Chase may realize later that it's extended too much credit to you on both cards so they take some credit back. This is a relatively new thing, because many double dippers here as recently as May have not had this experience. We're not sure if it's happening to everyone now, or just applicants who may be overextended or Chase deems risky for whatever reason.

As I mentioned above, Chase has a 2/30 rule that limits an applicant to two approved consumer cards in a 30 days period. DH's just been approved for 2 cards. If DH wants the Hyatt card, he'll need to wait at least 31 days to apply for it then.

It's great that DH is already thinking about more cards, but I would caution against a single player going after Chase's cards too hard, too fast. If DH goes for the Hyatt card next month, that'll be 3 Chase cards in a matter of just 2 months, and Chase may deem him a risk and there's a chance Chase could shut him down (close his cards and terminate their relationship with him). One of the great things about have 2 spouses applying (2 Player mode), is you two can take turns at cards, since Chase sees you two separately even though you can rely on the same household income. Alternating turns at applying for cards creates the appearance that neither spouse is going too hard, too fast, doubles up on the signup bonuses, and picks up referral bonuses too.

Yes, we did double dip with Chase. I am expecting that the credit lines may shift once they see that 2 cards are on the way. And I told him he couldn't get the Hyatt one. We have Hyatt points, which is what caught his attention. We always have "almost enough" to book what we want, of course.

Yay!! Congrats! :cheer2:

All you need to do now is wait for your cards and get ready to spend $8k in 90 days and then watch your points roll in!

Thanks. Yeah, when I see it written down like that ($8K in 90 days) it kind of scares me. Sadly I don't think it will be a problem between our upcoming trip (although much of that has already been paid for - I hate how we have to pay for cruises in advance) and other expenses. Making use of that $300 travel credit shouldn't be a problem either. I just have to make sure we put most of our purchases on the right card I guess.

Hi everyone! I'm sure this question has been covered here somewhere, but I'm not having luck finding the answer in my searching. I've been reading a lot about travel hacking and have decided to get our feet wet. In the last week, I have been approved for the CSR and my husband has been approved for the CSP. Prior to this, we did not take out a new credit card since 2014. I was thinking of doing the following in order to enhance our options for earning points and would like to know if doing these makes sense or would be a problem:

1. Sign myself up as an AU on my husband's CSP in order for him to get the 5,000 points.
2. Have myself apply for the Chase Freedom Unlimited and sign up my husband as an AU.
3. Have my husband apply for the Chase Freedom and sign myself up as an AU.
4. Most likely keep the CSR for myself after the first year, but cancel my husband's CSP before the $95 annual fee hits.

Thanks in advance for your help and thank you to everyone who has previously posted as it has been so educational and helpful.

It says he's approved, welcome kit to come in 7-10 days. Hope that means we are all set with the first one.

2nd one says approved. Says 7-10 business days. So that's it? Is there something I need to do now?

Or do we just wait for them to arrive and then figure out which spending we should put on which card?

I want to send out a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has helped me get this far. :worship:
Congrats

Marriott/SPG Won’t Be Automatically Refunding Points Differences If Your Bookings Drop In Cost -- but "[p]lease contact [Marriott/SPG] for assistance moving your reservation to new category pricing."

TL;DR: Starriott won't automatically credit your points back for reservations at properties where the points have dropped, but it sounds like they will manually refund your points if you contact them directly.

Going to call about my Sheraton Waikiki reservation after August.
Same deal here but not a huge difference on a one nigh stay

Congratulations on the new CSP and CSR! You're off to a great start. We all have varied opinions on what the best strategy is but I think most of us would agree that signing up as AU uses up a valuable 5/24 spot that can be used for bigger sign up bonuses.
What types of points are you most interested and what do you plan on using them for? Flights? On which airline? Hotels? Do you or your husband have a business or "business"?

I thought the AU didn't count towards the 5/24. That definitely make a big difference in my approach. We don't have a business in any way shape or form, so can't go the business card route (that would have been sweet). We will most likely go to China (with our daughter) sometime in the next 3-4 years, so I wanted to start saving points for a more comfortable flight.

Now that I've had some time to relax I think I am going to keep the existing reservation and hope for the best. Reading some threads it sounds like this might have just been the perfect storm. Although he didn't say or reference this, I do have his direct number if I have problems. :cool1:

Signed up DH for a Fidelity account. It won't currently accept his phone number in order to send him a text to verify his identity. It said I could either call in or try again in two hours, so I'll just check it in the morning. Account is in place, just can't transfer in yet. Really excited to finally dip my toe into bank bonuses! I'm just not willing to adjust direct deposits since it's something I actually have to go to payroll for and can't do online, so it's too much work for me usually.

AU will count against you in chase's system. You will be denied by the system. You could ask chase to ignore the AU. its YMMV though. best not to add. it will take maybe 1-2 to remove AU and get it removed from the credit bureau.

for your #4, (as it might answer the rest of the questions), its highly suggestive you not cancel your husbands CSP but to product change it to a Freedom card. Yes, u will lose out on the signup bonus but 15k points isnt really worth a hard pull and a 5/24 slot. This may change your card apps maybe?

We will all advise against adding spouses as AU'ers. My dh is one who was denied for being over 5/24 and one of those slots was an AU'er on my card. Even though he called recon multiple times, Chase refused to approve him due to that. Do you have anyone else you could add an an AU'er on the CSP? I added my teens. My mom added one of my sons. CHase really doesn't care. Some people add pets I believe lol!

The freedom and freedom unlimited are both great cards. I much prefer the freedom and earn a lot of UR's from the 5% bonus catergories. I had the Freedom Unlimited for awhile but I didn't find it quite as useful to me. I may pick one up again someday though.

Big thing starting out is to go slow with Chase. You cannot get all these cards too quickly or you risk being shutdown. Chase does not count business cards against your */24 so many of us do add in Chase business cards and other banks business cards, like Amex (very easy to get approved for!), and that may be something you think about. I don't have an official business, but I do have a 'business' in that I sell things occasionally through CL and eBay. According to the Chase banker that I talk to at my local branch, that qualifies as a business and I am allowed to open business CC's. So, maybe think about if you have anything that would qualify you...teaching piano, selling used items, pet sitting, babysitting...

Whatever you decide, feel free to ask questions here anytime :) There is always someone around to offer help!

Not sure if anyone responded yet but yes AU count against 5/24.....
As far as a “business”....it can be anything your even thinking about possibly doing..maybe sell something on eBay, etsy etc...I sell on ebAy but have never had anyone at chase ask any questions about it.
I’ve just been doing this about 2 months ..opened the CIP....referred my husband and will have 190,000points in a few months between the required spends and a referral a quick way to accumulate points..

I did the Fidelity acct, but I'm not sure if I funded or not. It was too easy lol Should it show pending somewhere? I did a transfer from Navy Federal. I'll log in and check it again later.

Chase bank bonuses will appear on Tuesdays, correct? My ACH transfer went through today and I'm hoping that triggered it.

Yes, so far it's been the Tue following the DD.

Going to call about my Sheraton Waikiki reservation after August.

That's totally awesome that they'll adjust an existing booking without having to cancel and rebook. I was with you and wouldn't have touched it for fear of not getting all my dates back on the rebook. However, as much as I hate calling people, I probably would have called in to see what they can do. Nice to have it confirmed in advance. Congrats! :)

Which sailing? I may have booked pre & post cruise hotels already. And flights for our arrival flights opened today so they are on hold now :rolleyes1

You are so on the ball! We were just trying to nail down the sailing first and then start working on hotels. We are a little more than a year out so I have a couple weeks before I have to hunker down and figure out flights. We're doing a Northbound NCL in mid Sep 2019. Basically one of the last cruises of the season. Oddly enough we were looking for a "cold" vacation so we were going to do shoulder season and decided on Sep for the slightly more likely northern lights viewing. (I know most folks look for warmth, hubby isn't into heat and I keep failing at finding a cold vaca for him. every time we go somewhere that should be cool, there's record heat )

Our cruise is Mon-Mon so I'm looking for a pre cruise hotel in Vancouver for 2-3 nights and then we're not sure where we're going after Alaska. We're going to spend 3-4 nights there but not sure if we head back to West Coast and do a few days somewhere or just head back east straight from Alaska. I have to nail that down in the next few weeks so I can work on flights.

That’s what I’m thinking for you too. I’ve heard “businesses” like babysitting, baking, eBay...horse braiding:smooth:. The Chase business cards come with a nice bonus and even though you need to be under 5/24 to get them, they don’t add to your 5/24. The CIP has been a nice earner for me. I paid my property taxes on Plastiq and got 3x points...adds up quick!
