I love credit cards so much!

So I just want to mention - you may not want to jump in full force here. But I’d strongly suggest you consider branching out from just SW cards. If you open yourself up to a few other cards you could take advantage of the Chase Ultimate Rewards Program and generate a lot of free travel :)

Thank you for that. Eventually that was going to be my next question...what kind of card should I consider opening next :-). When you say Chase Ultimate Rewards, is that a credit card? I assume it's a program. Is there a specific credit card I should apply for?

So a couple things:

-recent change makes you only eligible for 1 bonus on either the plus and premier every 24 months, we expect you will be able to double dip to get around the restriction but I have not seen this confirmed (double dipping is applying the same day like you can do with the 2 sapphire rule)
-reviewing above your DH will be eligible for either card in 6/2018, and should be able to double dip if you can meet the minimum spend
-you will not be eligible for another bonus for at least 24 months given your recent premier, but it is yet to be seen if you may be eligible for the new premium SW card

Agree with above branching out could give you additional travel rewards, like a chase sapphire

Sorry, so many newbie questions. Still don't understand double dipping. Do you mean opening, for example, the SW premier and plus cards the same day? I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to do that :-).

Can I keep my current Plus card opened and apply for another one? Or should I close the current one first? I understand I have to wait the 24 months to get the bonus.

FYI...those with the Toys R Us MasterCard and possibly just the store card.

Glad I won't be losing my $25k line...straight 2% back as a statement credit.

Oh, I'm sorry. Need one more clarification. You say "eligible for 1 bonus on either the plus and premier every 24 months." Are you saying it does NOT work, for example, to open the Plus and get the bonus, and then say 3 months later open the Premier for the bonus? If that's the case, my SW Plus got the bonus July of 2017. Does that mean I WON'T get the bonus on the Premier I just opened?

Yep double dipping is opening the two cards in one day.

You would need to close your current plus card to be eligible to reapply with a bonus.

Ultimate rewards has a set of cards that earn it, Chase Sapphire Line, Chase Freedom line, and Chase Ink line. best recommendation is to start out with the CSR+CSP combo(both sapphires), downgrade one to a Freedom in a year, apply for an Ink, then u will have a pretty wide category. CSR=3x travel/dining, Freedom= 5x rotating categories, Ink = 5x on office supplies(or gift cards) or 3x on other things.

basically. but there are a few DPs that say you dont have to. still highly recommended to do it on the same day, on a weekday in the morning.
yes, u have to wait 24 months from the day u got your last bonus.

Yes this was a change in 4/2018, you are only eligible for one bonus either the plus or premier in 24 months thus the double dip strategy. I think you will be ok with the bonus since the change went into effect 4/5, you could message chase to check.

I'm so sorry, but THANK YOU (EVERYONE) for being so helpful. I will be sad if I don't get the bonus. That said...can you help me understand the double dip strategy yet? Are you saying that if I apply for both the plus and the premier in the same day, they might go through and I'd get the bonus on both of them?

apply for one card. if it goes pending, get it approved(call recon). Once card 1 is approved...

Open another browser or going into incognito mode. apply for card 2. If that goes pending, call for the approval.

viola, double dip with 2 cards.

Probably depends on when you applied, what were the terms of the bonus offer. The current offer terms state:
"40,000 Bonus Points
The product is not available to either (i) current Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapids Rewards® Credit Card, or (ii) previous Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card who received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months. This does not apply to Cardmembers of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Business Card and Employee Credit Card products."

Since the new offer details state "any" SW CC that received a new card bonus within the last 24 months, it does seem that a bonus on the Plus within 24 months would affect getting the bonus on the Premier and vice versa. If you applied under the previous bonus terms that didn't have the new language stating 'any card' you should be ok.
They also called out that this condition doesn't apply to Business cards, so another way to double dip without having to do it on the same day is get a personal card and the business card. That you could space out a couple months.

Now that I have a few (actually MANY) pages under my belt LOL, I have some specific questions I’d like to ask. And I do apologize if you’ve maybe already answered these whether for someone else or me directly. I don’t think I’m quite ready to venture into this “hobby” full on. I think for now I’ll stick to what I can do with my and DH’s Southwest cards. This is the situation: DH opened SW Premier card and received the bonus on statement ending 6/3/16. Due to the annual fee, we recently closed this account. I opened a SW Plus and received the bonus on statement ending 7/17/17. I opened the SW Premier on 4/3/18 and am currently working on my $2000 in purchases to earn the bonus. I’m not a fan of paying an annual fee so I’d like to cancel the Plus before I’d be hit with the fee. If it’s anything like when we canceled DH’s Premier, they’ll offer to waive the fee, which I’m thinking would be good because I’d earn the 3,000 bonus points. But…I’d like to open another Plus for the points when the 50,000 bonus comes along. Do I have to close one Plus to get another Plus? Is that how this works? And what do I do with DH? I’d really like to play the game with the two cards and keep earning the bonus. Is that do-able? I’m aware of the 5/24 rule and know to keep an eye out for where we’re at with that. Thanks for the help!

Since DH got the bonus in June 2016 he is eligible in June 2018 to get it again. He can try to double dip at this point, but I am not sure if we have seen any DPs of this working, or we just all assume it will work. You are out of the SW game until at least May 2020 since you have not received your bonus yet. Though we are not sure about the new SW card coming soon.

You can cancel the card as soon as you see the points move to your RR account. My AF hit this month and is due on May 4th. I just called yesterday to cancel and she said fee should disappear in a day or two. I just checked and the fee is refunded and the card closed. She gave me no offer to keep the card. She mentioned that my fee was due and said I guess this is why you are closing it. I said yes and she said Ok, I will close it.

Do you have a business, or any sort of side hustle that could qualify as a business? (rental property, Sell things on Ebay, sell cookies, teach piano, consulting, etc.)... Some great offers out there are on business cards and you'd be surprised at how easy it is to qualify. If you're open to trying for business cards it opens up a whole world of AWESOME opportunities :)

If you would be open to a business card. I would recommend the Chase Ink Preferred (CIP). You (or husband) would apply for this card as a sole proprietorship (Use your first name and last name as the business name and your SSN as the EIN). Here's how that bonus works:

Chase Ink Preferred (CIP)
  • Best Online Offer = 80,000 Ultimate Rewards (URs) for $5k spend in 90 days (there is an in branch offer for 100k - it requires some additional work to apply in branch to with a BRM).
  • Annual fee = $95 (not waived)
  • Points are worth = 1.25 cents each through the travel portal OR transfer 1:1 to numerous partners
  • Assuming you'd use the 1.25 travel option here's what you get:
  • 80,000 bonus URs + 5,000 base URs (from min spend) = 85,000 URs worth $1,062.50 LESS $95 annual fee = $967.50
  • Also of note - you could hold these points, get a CSR after and then you can redeem these points at 1.50 via the CSR making it worth $1,180
This card as well as its friends the CSR (Chase Sapphire Reserve) and CSP (Chase Sapphire Preferred) earn Ultimate Rewards (URs) which are super awesome (flexible) points that can be used to pay for hotels, flights, transfer to Southwest, pay for On-Site Disney stays and packages, etc.

I did find a DP on reddit from Sept 2017 that somebody at 4/24 + a HELOC was able to get approved for a CIP. :)

Yay, that is good to know! One last thing about this HELOC process, they ran our credit reports and mine was awful! At least by my standards. I wasn't even in their top tier. I check my Discover score and Credit Journey score often and they are top notch. Always slightly above DHs even. My Discover score is 847 my DH is 838. My Credit Journey Score is 828 Dh is 821. The score they gave me was 772! Dh got an 804. They said these were out of 818. They dinged me on Time since recent account opening (Dec 2017), Too many accounts with balance (I have 4 chase CC and Sams and Target, only 2 have had balance in the last year), Too many bank or national revolving accounts with balance (I'm not sure what this means, I think it is Sams and Target, but I have not really used them since I started the CC game last year) and too many accounts in last 12 months (only 2 when I double dipped in December). Why do you think there is such discrepancy in the number they gave me opposed to the other two? I guess I need to pull my Equifax report to see if it correct. That is what they used.

What is the total number of biz cards you can have with chase? I have the CIP, was thinking about the CIC but would like to get SW biz and Marriott biz. I was waiting for Marriott to see what happens with the merger and stuff. I couldn't get SW until 3/19 to maybe try the double dip but want to get the CP.

Since DH got the bonus in June 2016 he is eligible in June 2018 to get it again. He can try to double dip at this point, but I am not sure if we have seen any DPs of this working, or we just all assume it will work.

I recall seeing some post-“one SW personal card rule” DPs that said double dipping works, but you probably won’t find too many people going for a SW double dip right now because both Plus/Premier personal cards are at only 40,000 RR bonus/each and are not enough for a Companion Pass whether double dipped together or individually in conjunction with the Business card. Others are in a holding pattern for the SW Premium card rumored to be coming out later this year. Besides, a lot of churners time their SW applications toward the end of the year or start of the new year to get as close to two years use out of the CP, and many already have CPs for 2018-19.

So I haven't done an AU on Chase in a long time, and even then the last one was a co-brand card that I may have even added during the application. Things have changed since :) I know for sure I didn't give DOB or Address previously (fuzzy on DoB for the co-brand but pretty sure not) so that stopped me when I was just looking to setup AU on my new Sapphire Preferred for the bonus. Folks still do the middle name with same b-day and addy with no troubles? Do you have a lot of AKA's on your credit report now? :)

Just called the Chase down the street and had to make an appt for Friday since the BRM handles multiple branches. The person setting up the appt verified the 100k was available for the CIP (Atlanta). Question: I was planning to let my DH sign up for this card so he could get primary insurance when he rents cars for business. I checked on Credit Sesame and his utilization is at 16% due to a large business expense. The payment is due next week, but even if I pay it today it won't show up for awhile. Do you think 16% is too high? He has 0 Chase cards is at 0/24. The last two cards he applied for in Oct were biz cards. I could sign up for the CIP and then let him sign up for the CFU. I have 4 Chase cards (3 personal, 1 biz), 0/24, 7% utilization. All our UR points are in my name and worried about transferring between us in the future. Thoughts??

Well, tomorrow is the day I need to decide if I want DH to apply for the Marriott Premier or if I want him to wait for the Marriott Premier Plus the following day.
Premier current offer: 75K/$3K MSR
Premier + expected offer: 100K/$5K MSR.

We will need to meet the MSR before the July statement closes so I can get the Travel Package. I'm leaning toward the current offer since we could meet the spend in easily in less than 60 days.

It's May 1, for forward thinking Discover card holders with 5% categories, you can activate Q3 today.

Also noticed when I did so that they are listing the cashback earned in the quarter on the 5% calendar page (https://card.discover.com/cardmembersvcs/promotions/app/5percent) While it's not as convenient as Chase showing the individual transaction, at least you can calculate if it's picking up the transactions as expected.

Worried me for a second when I saw Q1 at 74.90 because my goal was to get the full $75 so I wondered what didn't count... and then remembered I got a discount on my Speedway GC purchase so I was indeed $2 shy of the category max. I'm back to being ok with that as $2 in my pocket is better than .10 (doubled to .20) later and I'm still on track to make at least $900 after it doubles in Dec. :D With Restaurants being Q3 not entirely sure I'll make the 1k in cashback I started hoping for as that'll be tough to max out. But I'll wait to see what tricks might pop up since there's only so many restaurant GC's we'd want to buy. I think my most viable option right now is hope for a large dinner out where everyone gives me cash. :goodvibes

After DH was approved for the SPG Biz, he got a letter stating they moved credit from his Hilton Honors card to the new one. Instead of evening out the CLs, they left only $1K on the Hilton and put $19K on the SPG. I had him call to distribute the CLs more evenly, and they told him sorry, we can only move from personal to business, not the other way around. That's fine, except they didn't even give him the option to choose the amounts when he was approved. I told him to call back. Does he have a shot of undoing what they did?
