The chips are still a huge problem along with other parts. Here's a bit from an article that quantifies the issue -
Ford announced that it expects to have 40,000 to 45,000 unfinished vehicles on storage lots at the end of Q3, waiting for parts.

Since last year, automakers have been building vehicles that were missing components in order to keep their plants operating. When the missing components arrive, automakers install them, complete the vehicles, and ship them to dealers.

GM, at the end of Q2, had 95,000 unfinished vehicles on storage lots, waiting for components. Other automakers are also doing this to mitigate the effects of the chip shortages. -

At least they are still building but that's just nuts.

Can any of you order one instead of waiting for the dealership to get one in? It may cut down on the time it takes to get it, at least it seemed to with Ford because it gets added into the build schedule vs waiting until what you want is made and hopefully shipped to your dealership.
I was told Honda doesn't take orders. They inform dealers of what they are building that will be sent to them.

Can't wait until we reshore chip manufacturing, but that's probably years out.

So just thought I'd share my experiences for those in the new car market. Feel free to ignore.

Everything is still insane. Although I ruled out a Rav4 because I like leather seats, I did ask what the wait was on a Hybrid XLE Premium and was told 9-14 months.

I still am waffling between the Tuscon and the CRV. I really don't think I can go wrong with either of these. The Honda dealer I use wants me to put down a non-refundable deposit. They say the vehicle is 90-120 days out. I've never heard of a nonrefundable deposit, especially when the dealer doesn't even have a car to test drive. This dealer has no market adjustment, but has $2000 of stuff you have to buy (paint protectant, mud flaps, etc.). So a $2000 market adjustment regardless of what you call it. I called another Honda dealer nearby and they have $3000 market adjustments on all CRV Hybrids. Somehow there price was $3500 more.

I suspect the Tuscon is the same story and they have almost the same MSRP. The Honda dealer I use has the same owner as the Hyundai dealer and requires the purchase of the paint/seat protectant. Another one threw in an extra two years of oil changes for $1500 (that you have to pay for).

I probably should just wait this out but it's now in my head that I want all of the new safety features, better fuel economy, and a vehicle I can take on trips.
My husband ordered a Maverick pickup truck from Ford in January of this year. It’s still not even in production. We did have to give $1000 deposit, but it is refundable or transferable. We did have to pay also around $1000 extra for that mandatory paint protection pkg that the dealership adds. But they are selling the Mavericks for $10K more than what he bought it for right now, so I’m sure the dealership would be HAPPY if my DH decided he didn’t want the truck once it came in. But who knows if the truck will ever come at this point. They are now taking 2023 orders when people are still waiting on 2021 and 2022 models to be built. My DH knows someone who has been waiting since June 2021 order date. I agree, super wild times.

Sharing my recent car buying experience.

I bought a non-hybrid Rav4 in June 2022 and was able to pick it up in July (in slightly less than the promised 30 days). Refundable $500 deposit.

I went to two Toyota dealers. The first couldn't even tell me what was coming in, but would "put me on the list" of people to call when stuff came in. Apparently, there were several hundred people on the list. They never called me.

That experience didn't sit well with me, so the same day I went to another local Toyota dealer and they were able to tell me what was coming in and take the deposit. I wasn't able to negotiate the car price but negotiated for my trade and my interest rate.

I had initially wanted a hybrid but didn't want to wait the 9-14 months (and the car I was driving may or may not have made it that long). After having the car for almost two months I'm happy with it. I'm a Toyota or nothing girl, so non-hybrid was the compromise I made.

It's a never ending blast here. Saturday my dad was supposed to get discharged. I spent all of Thurs/Fri pumping him up to be ready for it. When we got to the SNF, EMS was slightly concerned about his breathing. Also the hospital forgot to send his food (he's on a feeding tube). The SNF took one look at my dad and refused him. They told the hospital he wasn't stable. EMS even told the hospital they didn't really check anything.

But I guess it's a good thing he got sent back. I got a call yesterday at school that his heart stopped! Seems he's having episodes of his heart stopping 4 to 5 secs. I raced up to the hospital and my dad was certain this was it, so he wanted everyone to come up. But he's stable. We kinda made the decision to stop intervening. Since this keeps happening they wanted to put a pacemaker in. So I asked today could I refuse. They said I could BUT they said the SNF will be constantly sending him back to the hospital when his blood pressure goes low from these episodes. So today he's getting a temp pacemaker put in.

On a MS front, what's the easiest way to MS MCGC? Lowes has $500 MCGC, and I'm trying to put some "legal" spends out there on my dad's bank card, LOL. I normally stick to VGC and WM for MS. I have a handful of FD around, nothing convient.

You can gift $500? I'm getting creative with "legal" spends. The lawyers around here don't seem interested in helping since he has so little. :(

For Michigan, I know a car is protected and a house (kinda, likely his won't be, mobile home). The only other thing he has is a bank account with $25k for my daughter. So there isn't a ton to save, but I still want to save all I can! I'm trying to accept I can't save it all.
Hope he feels better. Hopefully the pacemaker will help his energy and motivation if he’s not having pauses.

Hospitals don’t send tube feeds to nursing homes, they provide their own. It may not likely be exactly the same thing as there’s two big brands, but they’re essentially the same.

Nursing homes are kind of well know for sending back patients. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again once’s he’s able to go back.

The one dealer had the CRV Touring at almost $50000 out the door. I think we've entered crazy world! Waiting seems smart.
That's how much my parents bought their house for. These are indeed crazy, crazy times. Both our vehicles are over 160k, and I worry too about being forced to have to buy something. But I could just never spend that kind of money.

I wasn't able to order with Toyota. I would have to give them a $500 deposit and 'whatever' came in when my turn on the list came, I could accept or reject. I was looking at Toyota Highlander hybrid. I haven't bothered to visit any other dealers in my area yet. Based on the conversations I've had and the stories I'm reading, waiting it out may be what I'll do. My hybrid is 5 years old with 30k on it so I'm not in bad shape.

With all these dealerships trying to lock people in with $500 deposits and nothing to sell, it's sort of scammy in my mind.

Question on Pay Yourself Back? Does anyone think it will be extended again? I have a Sapphire Reserve and a bunch of points I can redeem. I haven’t had good luck with making travel with the portal recently and so really hoping it gets extended beyond September 30, 2022. TIA

This has been the way Toyota has operated for a while as far as they get what they get from Toyota. When I bought my last highlander in 2018 there was some feature that I was interested in (I don't even remember what it was now) and was told that Toyota makes what they make and the dealer has to take what they give them. At the time they said they could call other dealers to see if they had what I wanted but obviously they probably can't and won't do that now, doubt it would do anything as none of them seem to have much inventory. The last time I was at the dealer they still had a ton of sales people milling around. All I could think is why do you even need sales people anymore? Seems like they are just order takers now.

I do feel for people who are in a situation where they have to buy something now.

I've been reading along and am so sorry you're going through this. I was in a similar situation with my father summer 2021 and am still working on his estate. There's just no easy way to navigate these issues.

I'm no expert, but did want to mention the account with $25k for your daughter. Is this a joint account? If so, you might consider switching it to be in her name only asap. My father had several joint accounts with us (some of which consisted 100% of money that we deposited, they just continued to be joint from back when he opened them for us as kids) and in some cases those joint accounts will count as part of the estate for tax purposes. I wish that we had switched these over to only be in our names, but it's just that you don't think of this until after the fact. ☹️

when y'all are saying PYB for CSR/CSP...do you mean the pay yourself with statement credits using points 1-1 for whatever purchase,or the PYB at 1.25/1.5x rate for Airbnb? I'm confused, since the only option I can see is Airbnb for actual PYB category (oh I miss the grocery PYB!)

Unfortunately last time they extended, they waited until just a few days before the current end date to announce. I’ve got an AirBNB stay next summer - I went ahead and paid the whole balance now so I could use PYB just in case they didn’t extend. And I didn’t feel like I’d have enough time to make the final payment, have it post and become eligible for PYB if they give only a couple days notice like last time.

They still have dining too. That’s what I’ve been using it for.

Could you explain what you mean by this? (I've just gotten my first CIU, don't have any CICs yet) Thanks!
Chase doesn't have a limit on the number of business cards you can have with them. Since you're 4/24, keep tapping Chase every 3 months for a business card until they say no. Usually, the speed bump is when you approach 50% of your income in total credit limits with Chase (both personal and business). So, if you have unused cards or more credit on a particularly card than you need, you could preemptively reduce your CL to improve your chances of an auto approval. That said, Chase has begun allowing you to reallocate credit *during* an application similar to Amex, so you don't need to reduce preemptively anymore, only if you would like a higher chance at *auto* approval (rather than calling recon).

This is my son's situation. He's a 20 something a few years out of college. He drove what used to be my Mom's car, a 2004 Mazda3. It was literally the car that the little old lady drove to church (and the grocery store). So it's 18 years old, was running fine but the transmission just died. I work from home, so we've loaned him my car (a 2008 Mazda3 lol) and we've passed it back and forth if I need it (he also works from home twice a week).

Anyway -- just before the trans died, he and his gf spent a large chunk on some whole house plumbing upgrades/fixes on their home (they are recent homeowners). So on top of the new car challenges, his nice down payment was also gone.

Reading this car info thread is enlightening and frightening!

DH and I are retiring from full time employment this fall (I was part of a layoff I've known about for 18 months and we plan to take at least 6-12 months off and then maybe do some part-time work after some travel and my severance runs out), so I'm not even sure we need 2 cars any time soon.

I think his best course of action is to just pay us a little bit each month for use of the car and then wait out this insanity (we'd probably just return the money for help with his down payment when the time comes). Even late model used cars are almost as expensive as new, so getting a new car with a full warranty makes more sense I guess.

Anyone know if all these new car challenges impact even sedans like a Honda Accord or Civic? While I know he'd love a small/mid SUV, it seems like those are all hard to come by. I think he's realizing that he needs to be more open minded.
