I haven't applied yet, just trying to decide what to apply for. I'd really like to be approved for a CIU, but the last few times I tried for a biz card I was denied. But, I was approved for 2 personal Chase cards in Nov (SW double dip). I'm trying to build up my nerve to app again, and if denied try to come up with plan B. Thanks for the info!
I don't know why but I am always filled with apprehension when it's time to apply for new cards. I always think maybe there's a different card I should get, or maybe I will get denied, or I worry that I am forgetting something important, lol. I hesitated on the Chase Marriott Boundless with 5 FNCs and lost out on that opportunity.

So now I am about to apply for a new Chase biz. A few days ago, I moved my UR points and closed my oldest biz card, I made the payments on all my cards. I got a referral code from P2. I previously lowered my CL on one of my Chase personal cards. I am all set...

(I was all ready on Sunday, but then I thought maybe I should wait till Monday. Now it's Tuesday, lol....)

I can relate. Anxiety issues always pop up when I'm applying. Just take a deep breath and do it! :)

Same here always holding my breath for an instant approval….
Sending :tink:you get one on your application

I'm jumping all over the $15 back on VGC at OD this week. Yesterday I went twice and used my Surpass (to get another $800 towards my $15k FNC, LOL). Today I already cycled those through Serve. Today I was checking my Chase offers and 5 cards have the $8 back offer. So I just ran and got another $400 on my CIC. I won't max out the 5x on the CIC this go around. But I'll make $64 between the $15off and the $8 offer on the 5 cards. Also I like getting the "everywhere" cards. They are lower fees, and I can load $200/swipe at WM! So it's MUCH easier to cycle the spend through.

I have to laugh at all the hesitation we all have before applying for a new card. I've been running circles around trying to decide on the Delta Amex Plat Biz. I think I'll pull the trigger. I need a new spend. And I'm still not ready for the MDD. Though I think having that in Sept/holidays would be good. Taxes are due in Sept and Jan. That would take care of a lot of the spends. I guess the longer I wait, the less time I'll be 6/24, LOL.

OMG! How do points just disappear? You were trying to send them to another Avíos account right?

Yeah I moved URs to BA taking advantage of the bonus. Then on avios.com I tried to transfer from BA to Aer Lingus, both avios accounts. I got an error when I did the transaction, but they never transferred! They are missing though :( I'm hoping maybe tomorrow they show up. Not there yet!

I'm curious about the personal philosophy of other posters here (You) as it relates to the Travel Points/Miles Hobby.
Here's what I mean: I read a lot about earning points and I follow several 'experts.' There are two groups (beside here) that I learn the most from, but they have opposing philosophies.

First is the 10X Travel Group (Bryce) who has the most thorough, helpful guide I have ever seen on points/miles/credit cards. 10X has a suggested plan for credit cards if you are under 5/24 and another plan if you are over. Their earnings model is heavy on credit card apps for the sign on bonuses.

Then there is JGOOT (Just Get Out of Town) with Joel. He has some helpful videos on earnings and redeeming, but he does not believe you should have a lot of credit cards. Rather, his model is earnings multipliers and redemption multipliers.

(Both earn commissions from credit card sign ups, and have premium services but they both also have free resources and FB groups. I have only used their free stuff)

So where do you fall? Lots of CC sign ups/bonuses? Just a few well-chosen CCs with earning/redemption potential? Some other method or hybrid?

I am only two years in, but so far my focus is mainly SUBs. Thanks for the info on the other sources of info. One can never have too much info.

I’m all about the sign up bonuses.

I think we have many types here. Some of us go for SUBs, some for max earning with existing cards. Some are "epic get the most bang for your points" trip planners, some are "whatever is free is good" travelers. The general motto here is that there is no wrong way to do it.
Personally, I do go for SUBs but also max earnings on bonus categories for existing cards when able. I am not getting the max number of cards I could but am under 5/24. Our style is family travel, and free is my operative word. I never calculate how many cpp I get, I'm aiming for free vacations.

Mixed here. We have a bunch of cards but aren't applying as often as many on here. We are careful about which card we use when, though, so we can get those bonus points.

I did manage to get a policy that included "pre-existing condition" for our Paris trip and I purchased that 3 months after our initial deposit. So I might be able to hold off on Japan insurance, DH has a pre-existing condition so I do need a policy that cover him. I'm not worried about recovering the cost of the trip, just medical expenses while we are there, though I probably don't have to worry too much as there are several US military bases there and we have Tricare for Life insurance.
Which insurance company did you use for the policy? We also have TRICARE and DH and I are getting ready to cruise out of Dover, England to the Norwegian Fjords. We both have pre-existing conditions too. Ideally looking for a policy that will be primary and covers Covid.

I fall into the "just a few well-chosen CCs." I do not churn, and I do not want to keep track of tons of cards. I (and DH) have five cards that I use regularly:

  • CSP - this card does not get too much use. I keep it for the ability to transfer URs to travel partners.
  • CFU - this is DH's main card since he does not like to keep more than one CC in his wallet. 1.5x on all his purchases. ETA: I am an AU on this card so I use it a lot too if the other cards don't give more than 1.5. Many here recommend NOT being an AU to stay under the 5/24 rule, but since I have no interest in churning, I will always be way under 5/24 should I want to add a Chase card to my portfolio.
  • CFF - for the 5x rotating categories
  • Amex Everyday - I use this for groceries when there is not a 5x category on another card. A few other purchases get put on this as well.
  • Discover IT - for the 5x rotating categories. Cash back earned pays for the CSP annual fee and other travel expenses
We also have the chase no-fee Disney and the Chase no-fee United - but these get very little use.

I find the points do accumulated rather quickly with strategic use of these cards. Of course, I will never have an abundance (hundreds of thousands) of URs or MRs. But I am okay with that. I earn and burn, and so far it fits my travel needs. I also do not calculate the value of each point. If I find good use of points and get a free flight or hotel room, I am happy.

ETA: I pay my CCs weekly so they function more like a debit.

whats wrong with doing both? :P

I'm just curious how people here approach the game.
If by "doing both" to you means a lot of cards plus earnings multipliers that makes sense, but the two methods I listed are opposites (open a lot of cards--don't open a lot of cards). I don't see how you can do both?

There's more than one way to use and earn points.

Right now I depend primarily on earning UR's and transferring to Hyatt for my rooms. That's some organic spend, offers, and buying Visa Gift cards with my CIC to get 5x UR's, then spending the gift cards mostly at Costco and some on dining and my recent beach trip. These rooms at the beach (front) are well over $500 in summer per night, especially weekends.

In June I did an every 2 years Disney card. My DD has the no fee Disney card and is not a churner at all. She app'ed for the card for me a few years back and I made the MSR of $500 at the time plus I referred for 100DD's. I also put a small charge on her card when I see an offer like 10% off at McD's - I'll maybe buy Happy Meals for the grands.

So this time, maybe 4 years later, I used her referral for 100 DD and app'd for the Premier with a $49 fee and $300 sub. So, $400 plus 'spend' Disney dollars for me, minus the fee, clearing about $370ish. This money goes toward my DVC dues. Easy money and I'm well under 5/24. I also watch for Amex and Chase offers to get discounted Disney gift cards to apply against my dues. Makes it much easier to use my DVC points however I want. And since DVC points account for a good part of my vacation room spend, subsidizing that is a main focus.

Meanwhile I belong to Marriott Bonvoy rewards, IHG rewards, Radisson rewards, Hilton Rewards and Hyatt rewards plans. Oh and Wyndham but I don't do much of anything there.

I have 4 'free' night certificates with Marriott. Basically this accounts for a discounted room after the annual fee as most room costs are quite a bit higher than the fees. I use them on my road trips back and forth to Florida. Same with IHG - I still have the $49 IHG card so that's essentially the cost of a room for 1 road night for me. Wish I had app'd for the $89 card when you could have both. The original sign up bonuses from these cards have allowed me to book a Hawaii hotel for my son and DIL's honeymoon trip as well as pay for my nights over time and I still have a stash but I'm not trying to replenish Marriott or IHG points instead focusing on UR's.

I've stayed once at a Hyatt in Florence, SC using Hyatt points for a pretty cheap night, and the room was nice, but the hotel was a bit more out of the way than I like. Right now the FNC is almost a nuisance as I have to figure out how to spend it. Worked great until my beach nights doubled in price. Still, I'll keep the card until I decide to do another SUB with it, but transferring works well.

I used my Hyatt points and some Radisson points for my beach visit. Free at beach in Maryland which is quite pricey in summer. First time at this Country Inn and Suites and probably the last. The room was fine, the breakfast was subpar and the location was fine for dining in the area but my preference is beach front. I don't want to be crossing 6-8 lanes of traffic with 2 grands. Instead we used the car and visited Assateague and just slept and showered in the hotel which would have cost over $350 for a weeknight. My aim was to use up some of my Radisson points prior to the Choice hotel takeover.

Over 3 nights this weekend past I used points that saved me approximately $1700. I 'could' have stayed cheaper on cash but I want beachfront, away from the very busy pier area and a newer hotel mid Boardwalk. We took the tram down and back to the pier area and it was so crowded! Not for me. I'd be clutching my pearls and my purse. Just sort of kidding, I don't wear pearls at the beach.

I've also used Southwest points in the past and have a small stash of those points. They don't expire but I don't keep the cards anymore since I don't fly. Family used all my points.

Overall I find UR's and Chase cards the most valuable for me. I have collected Amex MR's and cashed them in for gift cards and bought a ride on lawn mower. For those who fly and want business and first class, Amex MR's are excellent.

Oy..... I booked a Hyatt stay next month on Dh's points, assuming he'd come with...and now he can't join. I already added 'wife checking in first' to res. while booking....should I be concerned?
