Had to cancel a hotel I booked on Expedia points. Super easy, no issues getting my points back. Had my points back in less than 2 days.

What in the world do I do with these points now? I have until Fall to decide...

Just a super quick checkin. I haven’t been able to keep up here. Spotty internet and cell service. Below normal temps in Joshua Tree 40 in the morning and 50 in the day time. Below normal for first full day in Death Valley 67 and it rained!!! Have a picture at Dante’s View where it was 45 and raining on me. I prefer DV to JT. The colors and different geology Are out of this world. Just so much to see; it is amazing.

My knee is not doing well. Had to cut a few hikes short and ice it in the car driving back to the hotels. Don’t worry DS was driving. I was in pain in the passenger seat with the ice bag. It might be time for me to acknowledge this might be my future with my knee. I’ll be seeing the Dr sometime when I get back to go over options.

To make this credit card related. Working on BBP MSR and has worked well except a 2 gas stations where it said it took Amex but for some reason it didn’t work. Oh and sticker shock at the gas pump. I left OH where it was 1.85. Here in S.Ca it is 4.45. o_O

So sorry about your knee! Hope you can still enjoy your trip.

$4.45 for gas?! Holy cow that's a lot.

On these school closings, I get it. Who knows where these kids have been on spring break. My coworker and her family (including her brother who is in college) went to France. IMO they all should self quarantine for two weeks. We are not allowing her back in the office for two weeks. I get what an inconvenience this is. But we can be like China and contain this and get rid of it fairly quickly or we can spread it around forever (or until it gets warm and humid). I think the latter will cause a lot more economic damage and cost a lot more lives.

ETA: And I know some school districts are making rules like if you've left the country for spring break you cannot come to school for two weeks (saw mention of it on a Disney Cruise Facebook page). But then you have to trust people to follow the rules. And we've already heard some ridiculous stories of people asked to self-quarantine who exposed or may have exposed numerous others.
I'm in a Japan travel group on Facebook and someone posted about still going to Japan in March. Another responded saying, "I hope you know you'll have to quarantine for two weeks when you get back". Then someone replied and said, "How are they gonna know if I quarantine or not?". It's people like that that are gonna spread this around.

@Haley R heard in the VP briefing on the virus this evening that China gave data on 9 pregnant woman who had COVID-19 while they delivered babies and the babies were healthy.
I think I read about that, too. That's good news! I haven't read anything about it affecting pregnant women or infants. At this point, I'm more worried about spreading it than getting it myself.

Well, I think any university is concerned about how quickly the virus could spread within a closed community like a residential campus, and I think they would not want to act in loco parentis at that point. I expect that some schools will continue with online classes only after this period of time, depending on their outside community---like Harvard is doing.

Yep. And add to that the fact that dorms and cafeterias are easy places for it to spread. Plus there are staff and faculty there as well - and they aren't all young and healthy. Just listened to an Italian doctor talking about intubating a healthy 20 year old, too, so college kids are at risk as well.

Our local public schools are still open, and I've seen teachers posting online that this is a terrible idea. Even if the kids don't get very sick, they do get infected and spread the virus, both to the teachers and their parents. It's a mess. (We are in an area with community spread, so of course things are very different here).

I have a question about cancel for any reason insurance since we've never used it before. What if you booked plane tickets using miles? I'm thinking about our potential Japan trip and we would transfer Chase points to VA. How would that handle that situation?

Miles aren't cash and are therefore not covered is the conclusion I came to after many rabbit holes of research. Some policies do cover award re-deposit fees, the policy I got will cover up to $250 in award re-deposit fees. Keep in mind for the stuff you pre-pay cash for it's 75% (or whatever your policy states, that's what mine says) back, not 100%.

I kind of figured this was the case. I don’t think we’ll be booking plane tickets in June then. I doubt things we’ll be better by then and I’m not taking a one year old to japan if things aren’t better here or there

Does it work the same for hotel bookings on points?

Yes they go back into your account and can be used by anyone....no time restrictions...make sure when cancelling to select you would like the $5.60 security fee refunded to your CC
Thank you. It's my DD's flight home for spring break. Looks like I'll be driving to pack her home for the semester. I'm sad she probably won't have a formal graduation.

I am so glad that I cancelled the Maldives. I was originally concerned about transiting through airports and regions and a possible quarantine. I now see that 2 atolls have confirmed cases of the virus.

I have decided against NYC and Hawaii. If we travel it will be to Toronto for a few days. Toronto hasn't yet had any community transmission, but they say it's just a matter of time. Currently airports don't worry me -- we always have plenty of hand sanitizer and I have travel-size packages of Clorox wipes. So for now we are heading home for a week for Passover / Easter.

Dd's school hasn't announced they will be going online only, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did after break. Time will tell. This week they cancelled the school tv station trip to Washington and March of the Living has also been postponed (not school-related but several of her friends were going on this trip).

I'm exhausted. My job is Covid-19 nonstop now. I do healthcare PR for an older population so you can imagine it has been bonkers.

It feels like things *changed* today in terms of tone, messaging, seriousness of cancellations. We will see, but NY calling out the National Guard really seemed like a moment.

IF you’ve been waiting for hotels at DW to open up in April...keep in mind the Swan/Dolphin have conferences. DH just had to cancel our DW reservation for April as his company says NO TRAVEL. If actual conferences cancel, there will be hundreds of on site hotel rooms ending up available.

How early in May is the graduation scheduled? Maybe they'll still be able to have it.

Ours are currently on spring break, so if they tell them not to come back then no one is going to have any of their stuff needed to even do online classes. It is a mess.

I just saw Purdue posted too, so feel it is a matter of time. DD said she thought she is supposed to get an update tonight.
These college closures seem so extreme to me. So, you close the dorms which would mean freshmen and a large percentage of international students will need to go somewhere else. At most of these schools, 75% of the students live off campus. So, the upper classmen stick around, party, etc. They won’t be isolated. My DD had spring break last week and is back at campus...for now. I guess I’m wondering if they will extend the semester? Online classes are one thing but what about the lab classes, clinical education etc? I’m not paying for an online education!

My husband just got off the phone with his mom and she was really surprised that we haven’t cancelled our trip. We leave for WDW on Saturday.
I have Clorox wipes not travel size, but I was going to pack them in sandwich baggies just to make it easier on the plane and around the parks.

At my dd's school (IU), the dorms will remain open for those students who don't have anywhere to go. There will still be food service, just with adjusted schedules. Right now it's only for 2 weeks after next week's spring break, so labs/clinicals won't be affected that much. I can imagine the mess having 1/2 semester online would be, though.
