These college closures seem so extreme to me. So, you close the dorms which would mean freshmen and a large percentage of international students will need to go somewhere else. At most of these schools, 75% of the students live off campus. So, the upper classmen stick around, party, etc. They won’t be isolated. My DD had spring break last week and is back at campus...for now. I guess I’m wondering if they will extend the semester? Online classes are one thing but what about the lab classes, clinical education etc? I’m not paying for an online education!

im a university student who just got the school closure notice a couple hours ago, our school elected to suspend the school until April 3rd until re-evaluation, all the classes will be online. so the rest of this week + finals week. we got spring break coming up, then its first week will be online.
Students in dorms can elect to stay home until April 3rd.

as for tuition cost, ppl are already asking for a discount, which i find pretty silly.

It sucks, its a week before the final and am told that the exams will be harder since it is now open book open notes open online...

What is the absolute last minute I can cancel a SW flight and get my points back? I am supposed to fly to Kansas next Friday to visit family but am reconsidering. I think I'm going to make the call next Wednesday night (I would need to be checking in on Thursday morning). I have asthma and a majority of the people I routinely interact with - boss, coworkers, clients, and church friends - are all in high-risk populations. I really can't get this bug, even if I would probably come out of it ok.

Also, if I used an Amex airline credit for fees/add-ons and I cancel the flight, is that credit just gone, or does it get returned to me to use on hopefully another flight?

How about lab science students? Something tells me dissecting random outside critters in their kitchens via Skype isn’t going to meet their requirements...
My DD is a nursing student with required clinical hours. She can’t do that online! She also works as a tech at the hospital, so she’d probably stick around. As of now, her school is still open. We’re planning on attending a function there this weekend if everything is a go.

I believe it is 10 minutes before the flight departs.

You can cancel up to 10 minutes before your flight. You can get your $5.60ties returned to your credit card or to a gift card if you used one. Other add ons I don't know about.

That does stink. My kids have their spring break next week. And the semester will be half over at that point.

It depends on what you like I guess. I think I’m weird in that I didn’t like Key West that much. But I don’t like water and my friends made me spend all day on a boat. I did have fun, but they snorkeled and spent time in the water and I stayed on the boat. They did make me ride a banana boat float thingy and I may have cried a little bit. Lol. Everyone was getting thrown off and I held on for dear life.

I have only been to New Orleans as a day trip but I’m sure you could add plenty of things to see there. The French quarter area would be a one day thing for me but there are cemeteries, the zoo, the World War 2 museum and other things to add.

If you like to drink either place is a great place. Lol.
@Crazed4DisneyinSC we have a trip to New Orleans planned for Spring Break this month, if we get there. We actually added a day because there are so many things we want to do. I booked through the UR portal and have Zoo and Aquarium tickets, swamp tour, historic riverboat cruise with battlefield visit and a jazz brunch. Plus we’re foodies and there’s a million great places to eat.

After the flight takes off... 🤣 (half kidding - do they still refund points like that?? I feel like they used to if I recall correctly!). I’d go with the 10 minute ahead of time plan though.

I worry for my friends who don't have that stash.... I think no matter where you live, it's wise. We always did when I was growing up too....(I'm not a survivalist lol I promise!):coffee:
My coworkers say they’re all coming to my house because I have lots of food. Extra fridge in basement full of beer and water (water really for ‘just in case’ or travel as otherwise we use refillable bottles/cups with filtered water) and freezer full of food. As long as power works I can make nearly anything we need, bake bread, etc. Will be short on fruits and veggies but DS would call that a plus.

Same price here in the southeast!
Gas is $1.80 here!! I know we’re usually one of the lowest in the country, but can I selfishly hope it keeps falling?! lol

Oooh please let me know how it goes if you guys do make it there, which I hope you do! We are actually now talking about doing both key west and New Orleans this year, for maybe 3 days each, since they would be cheaper trips. A swamp tour sounds super fun!! And pretty sure I would drive 8 hours just to eat beignets at Cafe du monde anyways, haha.

I saw the Target ad for this week is offering 20% off on a lot of home items like medicines and clorox wipes.
Except they are all out. Was at Target last Wednesday and all sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer gone.
Nope. Only 40% alcohol. Hand sanitizer is at least 60%.

Everclear.
If anyone’s still looking for hand sanitizer, check gas stations. My daughter got car sick on the way back from seeing the grandparents and the gas station we stopped had plenty of Lysol wipes and hand sanitizer. Which we gladly overpaid for at the time 🤣
My sister found some at a dollar store. Probably gone by now.
This sucks for someone like me. I'm highly sensitive to lavender which seems to be in every public restroom soap so I rely on hand sanitizer outside the house. I'm trying to gather all of my little bottles up that I have scattered in various bags to see what my stock looks like. I'm hoping my daughter has a few BBW ones that I can tolerate just in case.
Fill a travel bottle with soap for your purse. If there’s water, soap is better anyway.

My grandson’s college decided today to close until April 3rd also. The kicker is they expect everyone to be out by noon tomorrow. It’s a state school, but there are still a bunch of international and out of state students. What the heck are those kids supposed to do? Hopefully there will be people to help them find temporary lodging or transportation home.

Holy cow, ONE DAY of notice?!?!?

I'd be inviting out of state students to stay with us! We live in a university town and had a whole bunch of kids staying with us years ago for a hurricane when our oldest was a sophomore. We told him to invite everyone who didn't have a ready place to go to.

Well, I think any university is concerned about how quickly the virus could spread within a closed community like a residential campus, and I think they would not want to act in loco parentis at that point. I expect that some schools will continue with online classes only after this period of time, depending on their outside community---like Harvard is doing.
This is a huge part of why you are seeing so many universities go online, I think. They do not want to end up in a situation where students are stuck in dorms, overwhelming the med center, and the school has to provide meals and care to thousands of students in quarantine. As for discounts... lol I doubt it. Although you can certainly make an argument about room and board.

To move in the opposite direction of kids ages - DD6's after school care (which is also a full time daycare for younger kids) announced that children are not allowed to go if they have any illness symptoms at all, including just a runny nose. And of course DD3 (who goes to a different daycare that does not have this policy) comes home today with... a runny nose.

Yes from my understanding :(

Which is silly if they cover air miles. I'd only be worrying about the hotel points if something happened while we were already there than before hand. I want the trip insurance because 2 weeks in asia is a big thing but also my friend has a low level clearance so should something change in china while we're traveling and the alert changes I figured it'll help. But we also may be paying cash for hotels at HKDL and SHDL so we can stay on property. Depends on if they are on the UR portal like I've seen before. I've got all summer to do research on insurance though.

Oldest DDs school just called it. Honestly wasn’t expecting that one for some reason as our state hasn’t reported any cases yet. But they said students can stay in dorms if necessary. Their spring break is next week. They gave an additional week off with online classes starting March 30. Clinical students are to stay tuned for further instruction.

I went to my target today and they weren’t out of wipes. I didn’t look for hand sanitizer so idk if they have that or not. No one where I live seems concerned at all. There was lots of toilet paper and water left

Well...the last part perhaps shows that you live by rational people who realize that a respiratory illness doesn’t result in more poop! 🤣

I bought toilet paper because target was offering a $5 gc if you bought two charmin products. Dh said he didn’t think it was smart that they’re enticing people to buy more toilet paper right now lol
