I have what is probably a stupid question, but I swear I can't seem to find the answer on my own. How do you know what airlines use an airport as a hub? And does it matter? I'm researching flights for Costa Rica and for Italy out of Seattle and I can't seem to figure out which airlines I should be checking into most.
I cannot help you with knowing all the hubs but yes, it does matter. Example: If an airline is flying to FL from whatever state and they do not have a main hub en-route this is where is matters most. If something unexpected occurs in flight to make that craft do an unscheduled landing at an unaffiliated airport you might have major woes.
Spirit is one to watch for. A while back, they landed at an unaffiliated airport due to malfunctions. The plane was then grounded after a through inspection. Spirit had to get a new plane and new crew members to man it. Some passengers sought other means of transportation, others waited and waited. A four hour flight turned into thirty two hour nightmare.
