I know everyone looks into free credit monitoring options so I thought I'd share an observation. I signed up for Chase and Discover to do it along with a free one I have from a data breach. I figure Chase and Discover are pulling my info anyway periodically, may as well have them tell me about it. I don't do CK or the others since I'm not interested in having my data aggregated and monetized but I caved to signing up for Experian to double check an account open date (only to remember that it's EX that doesn't store the date, and that's why I didn't see it on my reports, d'oh)
Chase's service is through TU so I get info from my TU report, they also use that info to generate the VantageScore. Discover uses the info on your TU report to generate your FICO score each month but actually monitors your Experian report. They also claim to check for your SSN out on the dark web.
So after last month's CIP app and this month's SW Priority app I get various alerts because Chase pulls both TU and EX for me, every single time. Over 3 days after each I get an email from EX for the inquiry there - which was immediate, got the email before I got the Chase "thank you for your app" email - and email from Chase for the TU one and 2 emails from MyIDCare, the monitoring service that monitors all 3 bureaus. However, Discover doesn't monitor for inquiries, they only alert you to new account openings. Due to my app timings though the monthly alert summary report comes in after that saying there were no new alerts last month.
It's funny to see all the alerts and warnings and red lights coming from all sides and then here comes Discover "everything is hunky dory

"
I'm assuming I'll get an alert next month when Chase reports the SW Priority card. But at that point a decent amount of damage could have been done. I guess the moral of the story is, read exactly what you'll be getting with the monitoring service and don't rely on one that just tells you about new accounts opened. It'd be better to nip something in the bud after an inquiry rather than waiting for a new account to be opened and then trying to get it removed from your report.
