I just love when stores price things wrong....

And they think I am going to let them off the hook.
Walmart did it this week, the item is $24.77 regular price but the label says $9.67 and there are several of the same items stocked up on that same spot. I got that one for the $9.67.
Then I go to K-mart a couple of days later, I see one of those lawn christmas ornaments with a regular price of $24.99 but it has a huge label underneath $9.99. Go to check out and it rings $24.99. Of course I challenged that one too, I went home with my ornament and paid $9.99.
My thinking on this is, when I make a mistake I pay for it. If they make the mistake, let them pay for it.
This were not cases where people moved things and just put them there, these were cases were the price labels were placed in the wrong place.

This is one of my biggest complaints other than rude customer service at stores. I too have complained and have received my merchandise for what it was marked, but I think that is the law? I know what you are saying about people moving things but it is store error. Again if I make a mistake and misread a sign, and I have done that too, I will pay their price but if the make a mistake and misprice things then I should get the marked price. As I am typing this I am panicking, no flames please not meant as a debate.

The Kroger (grocery store) here is NOTORIOUS for that. They put things on sale but then the item rings up at regular price. The nice thing about that, though, is that if you challenge them on it, they give it to you for free.

I can't tell you how many things I've gotten free that way, though, to be honest, I'd rather pay the sale price and save the hassle.

I've challenged prices on Walmart as well, and got it for free as well.

I didn't get it for free , but I do expect them to honor the price that is posted if they are proven wrong. The guy infront of me at the register had the same problem with another item and it turned out that the sale price ended the day before but they never removed the label.

Don't worry about asking for the labeled price. If it's wrong, it sure isn't your fault.


Sometimes people change labels so we have to be careful. But I have no problem honoring a misprice.

What gets me is customers that misread the sign, on purpose or not, and argue with me, even when I show them the sign and explain it to them.

This happened at Publix with Bread---

All Price signs for products on on the shelf that the item is located so that the price is below the item. They had a sale on bread--but when I checked my receipt and it didn't show up the sale price. So I went and looked...the sale price was for the items below the tag. I went to complain that they should relocate the sign--they gave me the bread for the sale price (it was the same brand, different flavor).

I'm glad I got the sale price--but was just very irritated for the erroneously placed sign.

If you watch dateline or 20/20 during some point in the holiday season they will go to many stores all over the country and see if they are getting the price that is listed on the shelf or in the weekly flyer. You wouldn't believe how many places overcharge.

A few weeks ago DH and I had just finished grocery shopping when I noticed on my receipt that they had overcharged me. Dh thought I was crazy to go back and get my money but once he realized that it was over $1 he was ok with it. If I were so well off that I could over pay for something that is listed at a different price then why would I shop at a discount store like Walmart and Target!

I've worked in pricing at our grocery store...and I would not wish the job on anyone! In the county I live in we have a "super refund law" which means if we make a mistake on the sale price of an item (either by not getting the correct price in the system, or by not removing a sale tag) the customer will get 10x the amount of the difference, plus the sale price on the item. The pricing error goes to the county and if we have alot of violations we get investigated. Twice a year we have inspectors come through without notice to see how our compliance is. Usually we do very well...but it is a tough job making sure everything in every department is tagged correctly. Then you have vendors come in and set up displays but don't put up the correct signage..or customers that just put things anywhere on the shelves and then another customer sees a sale sign and picks up the item...which isn't event he correct item...but they didn't read the sign. We have 1 FT and 3 PT people doing the job and I help out once in awhile.

I never shop at Walmart so I have no idea if that is a big problem there, I do shop K Mart and they seem to be pretty good with their pricing here.

Now, I will probally be the one to get flamed but here goes....

It is not always the stores fault that a shelf tag is different then the real price. There are times when items get placed there by customers or just real lazy workers. At TRU, the tag clearly states what the price is for, so please look at them closely! If a tag says that a 40 piece lego set is $9.99 and the one you have is 80 pieces, then the tag is wrong and that is not the price!!!! Also please keep in mind that the store can only take so much of a loss, no matter what. If the item is $49.99, but the tag that was under it says $9.99, there is no way you should get the item for $9.99.

I agree that when ther are a half dozen of an item under a tag, it is store error. But I have seen customers move shelf tags or items to just have fun, or get the lower price for themselves or a friend. d

One of my local stores, Shopko, has a pricing guarantee. If the correct price is under $5, you get it free. If it's over $5 you get the correct price plus the difference in price up to $5. They have big signs at all the check-outs with the policy. Unfortunately, even if you catch a wrong price, you have to ask for the price guarantee. Instead they will try to just adjust the price. I even had this happen when I noticed a price problem on my way out and went to customer service to have it fixed. Great "customer service", eh? Then, they give me a dirty look when I ask for the price guarantee. It makes me crazy that they have a pricing policy that they try to weasel out of.

The stores in our area (Jewel, Dominicks, Cubs) if the item scanned at an incorrect price, it's free. The catch, you can't say anything whlie the cashier is ringing up your items or they will adjust to the correct price. You have to first pay for your order, then go to customer service and you will get your money back.

Got DH a nice suede coat like this last year. Was supposed to be over $100 got it for less than $30. They had a whole rack of them hanging on a rack that said 75% off.

i am a manager at a large retail store not Walmart..(flaming expected but...)
the law is:
if the product is priced incorrect and the cashier scans a higher price, and she doesnt or you dont catch until the sale is final with receipt. then you are in titled to the price marked and up to 10 times the amount up to $5.00 in a customer award... which you would need to bring to customer service desk not cashier. to reieve the difference.
If you tell the cashier that it is priced wrong prior to the end of sale you are not intitled to the rwong lower price . Most cahsers are impowered to change at price up to 10.00 at the register or will need to get a manager involed.
people take an item and it is reg $125.00.. marked 9.95 the store has a right to not honor that price due to human error again as long as it is caught before final sale.
i understand at that the customer gets frustrated, but unfortunatly many people do switch prices.as are legit wrong pricing..
Retail people are not out to get you... they are just doing there job.

I just want to ask this since it is somewhat related. When did we stop putting the actual price on the items. I hate going into Wal-mart Target etc and finding an item and there is no price on it as well as no price on the rack...is it then free??? I wish!!! To find out the price I have to track down one of those stupid scanners which are almost always broken or offline. I assume it is a cost cutting measure to not actually have a tag on everything, but it is frustrating at times. I would also assume that the sort of thing decribed in this thread would happen less if the price was on the box.

We put a price tag on every item. And we give the lower price, whether it be the tag or what the computer thinks it is. But the tag specifies the item, so if you come up with Stephen King's Book 6 in the Dark Tower series with a Book 7 tag - nope, you're not getting the sale price for Book 7.

Luckily, our store is small-ish (not a Walmart-type) so all the employees know what's really on sale in each department, usually.

I recently purchased a Halloween CD at Best Buy. I noticed that the wrong price rang up and pointed it out to the cashier who called over a manager. I took the manager and showed him not one, but TWO signs that said that the item in question was on sale. Of course, it was last week's sale and no one had taken down either of the signs. It took some time, but I did manage to get my $4 back. What a pain.
