So there's an outbreak in 8 states right now according to CNN, right?

MAKE THAT NINE!! Argh. :furious: I thought my glands were swollen a bit from an upper resp. infection (I seem to get about one a week). Yesterday, my left gland under my jaw was a little bigger and harder, a little more painful, but tolerable.

Last night, I got up about 2 a.m. and the whole left side of my face was swollen. I look like Frankenstein and it hurts like a you know what. I couldn't move my jaw, my ear hurt, etc. You could visibly see it.

Went to the immediate care center, and the doctor (who was really cute, btw. A real McDreamy) took one look at me and said, "Oh, no. That's my second case in three days."
I asked, "Of what?"
"Mumps!" :confused3

So I started putting two and two together (I recently traveled to Wisconsin and Illinois to write a couple of articles and both of those states are reporting higher than usual cases). I had a slight sore throat all week. I have a low grade fever (I thought it was just from waiting for SWA to open to darned September dates :lmao: ).

This is so stupid. Luckily DD was innoculated last year. There's not much they can do but quarrantine me in the house (Happy Easter, eh?), give me painkillers (YAY PERCOCET!! :cheer2: ) and put ice on it.

Anyone else was to join the DIS mumps club? At least I get to stay home from work for a couple of days and can eat ice cream and watch Maury Povich guilt free. I'm contagious for three days!!

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry that you have the mumps. I was not aware that there was an outbreak. I'll have to checkout CNN, i've never even had the chicken pox :sad2:.

I hope you feel better soon.

I hope you feel better soon! :wizard: :grouphug: It has been on the news here about the outbreaks of mumps!

I have been hearing about the outbreak on each news report. Sure do hope you get well soon. I have never had the mumps, nor vaccinated.

Ooo. I HAVE been. That's the kicker. I had to come home and call it in to my doctor so she will report it to the CDC. I've been REPORTED!! :woohoo:

Hope you feel better soon! We too have been hearing about the mumps on the news.

Im sorry you have to go through that. Your swelling must be really painful. Last week I woke up and all the glands infront of, and behind my right ear and at the top of my jaw were so swollen and puffy. It felt like I was beaten up, couldn't even lay on that side . I had no other symptoms except feeling really lousy and a fever. Just today (a week and a day later) I can finally touch the area and it is not very painful. (I had some Tylenol 3's to help me through) When I called the Dr's to come in they couldn't see me the day I stayed home sick, so I never went. I called back and a few days later (only because I really wanted antibiotics since im leaving for Disney this week and don't want to be sick) and they said "you should have been seen you could have the mumps!" What the?!?!? So if it was, mine was not the worse case, only 1 side but I feel for you, cause it hurts. Get lots of rest, and get well soon.

get well soon. Just reading your post makes my throat itchy.

Sorry you got the mumps! Hope you feel better soon!

At least you weren't getting ready to leave for a trip...

Hope you feel better soon!!! I had Mumps as a child and I know it is miserable!! What a way to spend Easter! :grouphug:

Sorry to hear this. I hope you're feeling better soon. :sunny:

I woke up in the middle of the night last night with a pain in my jaw and neck - I thought I must have been grinding my teeth really hard or something - I never would have thought of mumps! I'm glad I didn't know about the outbreak, or that would have been my worry all night long. :)

So apparently the vaccinations we got when we were kids are not effective? I hope you feel better soon!

Vaccines do not always prevent a disease. My DS had the mumps when he was 3 1/2 and he had the vaccine at 15 months.

I hope you begin to feel better. Rest and take care of yourself.

TY! I MUST be sick -- I only ate half of a Whopper and about 6 French fries. :rolleyes1

You probably got it on the airplane. On the news, they said that is how the outbreak started. One person sick on an airplane can rapidly spread an illness to many others.

I had the mumps as a kid. Not fun. DD was vacinated when she was very little. I heard that the vacination will not prevent someone from getting the mumps, but they should have a lighter case. Even so, I hope it doesn't make it to Florida.

OP, how you feel better soon!

My kids pediatrician was just telling me yesterday that most of the cases popping up now are in people who did not get the second shot (2 doses of MMR). Did you get both? I "think" he said it spread over here from some people who were not vaccinated from England. ??
Hope you feel better soon.

I had the mumps when I was in 2nd grade. I didn't have the vaccine. My doctor didn't feel girls needed it. I was out of school for two weeks, mostly just so I didn't infect anyone else. I really don't remember feeling all that bad. Just the first few days.

Feel better!

I'm not sure. I can't remember. I had to get something before I went to college. I heard that, too, about the puddle jumping. Airplanes are the worst when it comes to spreading stuff, and Southwest isn't the cleanest of airlines. I've traveled three times in the last eight weeks (Albuquerque, Las Vegas and Chicago). Ugh.

I can feel my jaw again, but not the corner of it. The swelling seems to be diminishing a bit. Or maybe the Percocets are telling me that :cloud9: .

Ugh...I'm sorry you caught the mumps! This makes me so nervous because we are in IL and we've delayed DD's MMR vaccine because of her severe egg allergy. I've got to give DD's ped. a call on Monday to discuss, once again, the risks/benefits of vaccinating DD.
