I Have The Mumps!!!

Oh boy, can I join your club?? I am in Indiana and was told I also had the mumps today. My right side of my face is so sore and swollen. I can't believe it either. I know I had the vaccine as a child and again before I went away to college in 1990. I think my case is mild at least I hope it doesn't get any worse than this. If I had any other symptoms I hadn't noticed. My youngest was in the hospital early this week for a badly broken arm that required surgery so I've been running on fumes anyway.

Happy easter to us!

If we put both of our good sides together, we could smile without it hurting! So sorry for ya! DON'T google "mumps"... some of the pictures are way gross!

Actually, they're now finding out that some of the people who got the mumps DID have the second shot.

Which makes it very scary.

I got another MMR shot about 15 yrs ago when I was going to start my EMT training. Heres hoping....

The doctor said this might be a mutated strain or something, but that it is the worst outbreak in 20 years. Men who get it often end up with swollen privates, too.

My mother was here watching DD this morning while we went to the immediate care center and jokingly said she wants her money back from our family pediatrician because OBVIOUSLY the immunizations didn't work. Yeah, Mom. Good luck with that. Dude was 100 years old back then. He's gotta be Night-of-the-Living-Dead old now.

If you were born in 68 or 69 it is very possible you got a bad batch of vaccine. Some coleges revaccinated students in that age range, but they never gave the second dose at my school :confused3 .

Vaccines are also not 100% effective.

So sorry you caught the mumps gypsydoodlebug I hope the swelling goes down fast. At least they gave you good pain killers :thumbsup2

Also it is my understanding that you can transmit the virus for up to 9 days after symptoms appear (and for as many as 7 days before that). Just so you know.

The second shot gives you more protection but it is still not 100% effective. With one shot it is thought to be 80% effective and with two, 90%.

Ugh...I'm sorry you caught the mumps! This makes me so nervous because we are in IL and we've delayed DD's MMR vaccine because of her severe egg allergy. I've got to give DD's ped. a call on Monday to discuss, once again, the risks/benefits of vaccinating DD.

My son had a fairly severe egg allergy when he was younger (he still has it to some degree) but he was able to get the MMR vaccine just fine. You may want to give it a try at an allergist's office.

gypsydoodlebug: How old are you? I'm very interested in hearing the age range of those effected. I've heard it is predominantly 18-25 year olds.

Oh, that's great...I was born in 1968 and I'm on meds that lower my immune system. I wonder if this will spread to the East Coast.

Hope you both feel better!!

Let's hope not!!! I'm still fighting off some weird cold/virus thing and between my son and myself, I haven't been to work in about 10 days. God, just don't want to get hit with the mumps. I think that today I *might* be thanking I was born way back in 1963!! I wonder when they were giving the MMR vaccine then--in school or in infancy?

Found this:

Many people received an inactivated-measles-virus vaccine in the early 1960s or an inactivated-mumps-virus vaccine between 1950 and 1978; such people need revaccination with two doses of the live MMR vaccine. (This will cause no harm even if someone had a previous live-virus-mumps vaccination.)

BUT I believe mumps vaccine is LIVE, right? I can't get LIVE vaccines. :confused3

I just turned 30 last month. The doctor said I'm his second case and the other patient was an "older lady."

I woke up this morning and feel a little better. The swelling is still there but is not NEARLY as bad. Still no appetite, though, which is good given that the Easter Bunny visited with chocolate last night!

I'm a magazine editor who travels freqently for work -- luckily I don't have any trips planned for two whole months, having just completed three. That's probably how I picked it up. Hopefully, my photographer doesn't get it, too.

Whatever you do, don't drink lemonade

My dad had the mumps as an adult(courtesy of me) and he was really sick for about 10 days. Not pretty. Sorry you're sick.

Saw something the other day about it being airborne. :scared1: :scared1: I'm sure there will be a LOT more cases. :(

I STILL remember how the mumps feel from when I had them when I was 6. Poor thing. I certainly didn't get Percocet then though.

DH and I were talking about this today and this is what we are going to try to do. If this isn't possible (if DD's ped. won't let us take the vaccine to the allergist's office...she wouldn't let us take the flu shot to the allergist because they had several doses in one jar), I'll probably just drive her to the allergist's office (5 minutes away from ped.'s office) after getting the vaccine. I'm concerned she'll have a problem with the vaccine because she had a bad reaction as a 7 month old when I had a flu shot (through breastmilk).

When my son had his first flu shot, we had the allergist order it and it was all done there. Took about an hour and a half. I'm sure that the allergist can order the MMR vaccine for you.
