I have a problem, a big problem....

What it boils down to, Epcot Beauty, is how much of a battle you want to get in to with this guy.

Realistically, he is being discriminatory. I'm no lawyer (nor do I play one on TV ;)) but I would imagine that somewhere along the line, what he is doing and "implying" is against labor laws.

But, the bigger question is how much aggravation do you want? Do you want to call him out and go the distance to prove he is discriminatory? Or, is this The Universe telling you it's time for a change and this is giving you the catalyst to do so?

I had a job years back in an insurance company. Nice job, nice people. Then they hired a new boss and I became the victim of reverse discrimination. I hung for as long as necessary to become 100% vested in my retirement. Could I have probably won if I sued? I think so. I had stuff written by her that was so blatantly disciminatory that it was lamost laughable that someone in a management position could be so stupid as to write that stuff down. But ultimately I decided it wasn't worth my time, and more importantly, my energy.

The day of my exit interview, I copied my packet of documentation, laid it on the desk of the HR person who was doing the exit interview and said "Because it's not worth my time or energy, I'm not suing the company or this woman for discrimination. But I thought you'd be interested to know the caliber of employee she is".

Coincidentally, a week later I heard that she was demoted from being a department manager to being on the "special projects team" and shortly thereafter, her new position was eliminated. Karma baby!

So think long and hard about what you desire to do.
Best of luck to you. I hate work issues!

I'd like to see a staff member keep me from going into the examining room with my children. What kind of office is this? I've never heard of anything like this in my life.

There's gonna be a LOT LESS families going if that's the case!

You've got that right! There's no way I'd send my kids back without me coming with them. Even my dentist's office asks if I want to come - I don't - they do fine without me, but I'd have an issue if they just flat out refused to let me be there.

I'm sorry you are undergoing this pressure, EpcotBeauty. It seems change is inevitable and you have to take control of what you can. That list and the exclusion of parents are not negotiable. I couldn't work in those circumstances. But, who knows, you may find a better place to work!

My crystal ball sees many lawsuits in this mans future.

I wonder how many other doctors are part of the practice and are they Jewish? How are the other doctors taking these changes?

If they are of like mind, maybe you could go out to lunch with some of the other doctors and see if they'd like to start a business without the tyrant!

Nope, they belong to the "practice". He is demanding about NO Holisitic medicine at all, NO PARENTS can come back with the children and payment must be made in full up front. Just such a huge change from what we did before.
that would be the day when they told me i couldn't go back with my child. nope, would walk out. he will be losing business for sure over this. In fact I know for a fact that they cannot prevent a parent from going in with a child for anything. They would open themselves up to potential liability if they took a child in for an exam and made the parent stay in the waiting room.
nope, that would not ever happen.

He told me it would be so much EASIER, if I was Jewish. Then he gave me the "list" and told me that we would work next Christmas and have all the Jewish holidays off.

what medical office is open christmas day:confused3 never heard of it unless it has urgent care component. Doesn't happen.

can i ask what state you are in?

Thank you, you are very wise. I appreciate all input from everyone. I'm headed to bed now with a heavy heart but hoping for new opportunities on the horizons.

to the OP: having been on both sides of this coin (as a medical office employee and a parent) i say get your ducks in a row then tell this joker where to stick his "list". as a former medical office employee, i can tell you he'll have a heck of a time keeping staff by dictating how they live their lives (used to have a boss like that-she's now in federal prison). as a parent, i can see the patients leaving in droves when they find out they aren't allowed in the exam rooms with their children. i'd like to see medical staff TRY to separate me from my daughter. *hugs* you're in my thoughts, i know the kind of person you're working for.

I know of several places that would LOVE for you to come work for them if you are open to smaller, rural communities.

No parents can come back with the kids? I would tell the doctor where to go.

wow, my shady meter is going off big time. If I ever took my kids to a doctor that wouldn't allow me in the exam room I'd never go back there again after I told them what I think of that policy of course. That's very "off" to me. And no employer should really be able to tell you what establishments you frequent for anything.

OP I hope you find something better.

OP: Maybe you should see if he's a registered offender....Judging from this comment.... makes one wonder....

He just sounds like a domineering control freak to me. If he is a registered offender he couldn't work with or near children under any circumstances.

Yikes! I'd be looking for a new practice pretty quickly. The doc I work with (I'm a PA) and I don't always have the same views on holistic medicine, vaccinations, etc, but I can't ever see him telling me that I can't suggest something like that. And to not allow parents in the room with their children .... :confused3 As a mom, like hell is my child going to be seen without me there. When he's a teenager, sure. But not until then.

Maybe he has not been caught yet?

Hugs to you OP. I am sure you number 1 priority now is to get the heck out of there.

'Dirtbag' is a word that comes to mind with this guy.

NO PARENTS can come back with the children

As a parent, this would make me run as fast as I could from the practice.

I don't know how large of a town you are in but if this new Dr starts getting a poor rep for ome of these changes, could it affect your ability to find a new place of employment? If you stay too long you could wind up guilty by association. Best of luck to you. I stayed way too long in a bad situation and it did a lot of emotional damage that has taken over a year to recover from.

if all you say is true, you are not doing your profession a service by coming on this board and whining. you should go to your boss and sit down with him/her and solve this conflict. there just is something wrong about venting about a fellow physician on a message board, and letting others bash him/her when they really dont know the whole story. not trying to be mean, but something just doesnt add up here.

I have happily practiced medicine in a family business for many years. I pay rent, but don't own, and don't have to worry about hiring a CPA because someone else pays my salary (I'm an associate and can do my taxes with Turbo Tax...woo hoo, lol) and life has been good.

The head doctor sold the practice to another doctor. I met him a few weeks ago and he expressed a genuine distress that I was not Jewish :confused3 (he is).

I have since been given a list of places I should frequent for lunch, dentistry, obgyn, allergist, dermatologist, nails, waxing, message....you get the picture.:confused3

Crap, I think I may have to look for another job, or venture out on my own. I feel this is so discriminatory....but I don't think I can do anything. If anyone could share stories or keep me in their good thoughts, I would be appreciative.

EpcotBeauty-I m going to come right out and say it. You are not making much sense to me.

You are a doctor? You have been at this practice for many years? Figuring you went to med school right out of HS that would put you at 26/27 when you graduated. Then don't you have to do a residency? Putting you close to 30ish. Then you practice with this group for "many" years. You must at least be in your mid 30s. Yet you don't know if what is going on is discrimination. You don't know how to handle it. And you don't know that having a Pediatrician (or anyone for that matter) in a room with a child without the parent present is not right.

I am sorry to say this, because I don't like to be like this but, something sounds amiss to me. I have a very strong feeling that you have some other reason for this post. What it is -I don't know, but I can't see you being a doctor and posting this problem here:confused3.
