I Have A Firey Hatred For Heelys

I think Heelies look like fun. My son would get a kick out of them. That said, kids do not belong on Heelies in restaurants, bars (yes, I said BARS), grocery stores, etc. They are, in actuality, skates.

As for parents letting us do things in public that annoyed others? Not hardly.

If my son wanted heelies, I would consider letting him have some. But he would be heelying where skating is appropriate.

I doubt DISers are making up getting run into. What would be the purpose? And if nobody saw out-of-control kids on heelies, or never got run into, where would this strong dislike come from? I suppose it is possible that some people exaggerate, to make their point. I also think it's just as likely that some DISers who allow their kids to heely all over town might forget to mention that their own kids ran into someone/something/heelied out of control at some point. (just my thought).

OMG I am not making any sense. Getting late or something. SORRY!!!! (Hope I phrased everything right!)

I have to ask the parents who allow their kids to use these...would you let your child roller skate in a food store??? On sidewalks, in a skate park..no problem.

WEEEEEE get out of my way!!!!!

(hangs head in shame) I am a 45 yr old woman & I must say that they look like fun & I wish I had a pair. But if I did, I promise I would not wear them in a mall, a supermarket or at WDW. And if I had children & they had them, they would not use them in those places either.

My neighbor bought her 5 y/o son Heeleys for Christmas. She said as soon as he got them he wanted her to take him to the mall so he could use them. I told her that they were not allowed at the mall and probably not in any public area. She said she got them for that purpose. She ended up taking the little chit to the mall and the grocery store anyway. The grocery store stopped her but unfortunately he wasn't caught at the mall. What is wrong with these morons that let their kids use these things in public?

Fire me up too!!! Tonight I almost got plowed by 2 girls (About 9 & 11 years old) on heelies trying to get to Small World (DLR) before it closed. They didn't make it! It may be petty but I was a little happy about that.:sad2:

I haven't had a chance to read this entire thread but my DS had a couple of pairs 3 years ago, when they first came out. The more expensive pair was easy to navigate but the Walmart pair kept him slightly off balance, causing him some difficulties.

He wore them to WDW but we strictly controlled him when he rolled. He never ran into anybody and we taught him to respect everybody around him. He learned how to have fun with them without interfering with anybody else around him. Also a life lesson, IMHO.

BTW, WDW security asked him to not use them and he complied. They seem to have changed their policy or there are just too many now to deal with.

I haven't read this whole thread, but I need to say this:

What happens when these kids are in public places (stores, malls, supermarkets) and falls...or falls into something...or knocks something down?

Will the parent take responsibility or will they turn around and sue the store because little Janey got hurt?

I CAN'T STAND HEELIES.

I've gotten almost run into on several occasions at the mall and usually the parents are nowhere to be seen. I've had to stop short walking because one of these kids came out of nowhere. If I get hurt, will the parents step up and take responsibility? I doubt it.

I wish they'd get rid of the stupid things altogether. If your kid wants to skate, BUY HIM SKATES!

My kids asked for them and for $60, I couldn't justify it. First, they are not allowed in school, church or in the mall. The local skating centers will not allow heelys on the skating rink. For $60, there were limited places that they could use them.

I found it more safer for them to have roller blades and use those in sanctioned areas.

My son begged for a pair, but he has HUGE feet at 12 years old. They don't make heelys for his size. My daughter really didn't want them.

They make Heelies up to a man's size 13, are your son's feet bigger than that? :scared1:

They must have just gotten popular around here. I've seen them and have been reading about them, but I've never seen kids actually using them until I went Christmas shopping. Yikes -- they were everywhere, and there was only ONE instance where the kid seemed to be in control. That was in the bookstore. Who in their right mind would ever think a bookstore is an appropriate place for those things?

When we were at Sears, two little darlings came flying down an aisle with their arms flailing everywhere. DD and I just stepped out of the way, but then one of the kids wiped out on a store shelf. She wasn't hurt, but even so mom and dad weren't the least bit concerned! DD's been asking for them, but I've been telling her no. Watching how stupid those kids were acting just reinforced it, and I told her THAT's exactly why she wouldn't be getting them.

I just don't get people.

The only size I have seen go up to size 9 mens.. he is a 9! (I read you had to go one size bigger). In the casual looking in stores/online, I have seen up to 9. That certainly helped the "oh, they don't make them in your size" argument.

Here's a pair that would fit him (and btw you only go a size up with children's sized Heelies. Mens and womens run true to size):

Don't worry, I won't tell your son. :rotfl:

I didn't read this whole thread (too long!) but I don't like Heelys unless they are used in an area appropriate for skating. Being in any crowd is not an area appropriate for skating.

I am baffled by parents who let their kids wear Heelys at WDW. Not just because of the danger involved, but also because of the amount of walking that is involved at a Disney theme park. When the kids are not skating, it looks like they have to walk in an unnatural position to use the shoes. That can't be good for your muscles if you walk like that most of the day in a theme park. Comfortable shoes are # 1 priority for taking care of your feet at WDW.

BTW, my dd was nearly plowed over by a kid with Heelys on a sidewalk at Pop Century. The kid's dad just chuckled at the near miss. :sad2: The kid was nearly twice the size of my 40 pound 8 year old. :furious: I do get angry when people skate where they shouldn't.

I saw a girl zooming around IKEA yesterday in heelys. I instantly thought of the DIS! BTW, mark me down as another heely hater.

My DS has them and he has never ran into anyone or knocked anyone down. It's a shame that the ones that do ruin it for everyone. SO some of you would knock a kid down even if they weren't bothering you or coming at you? I don't agree with how some kids use them but there are many kids out there that use them the right way.

I don't see the problem with Heely's if the child wears them in the appropriate place. Certainly, I agree, public stores, malls are not appropriate.

Sure there are, but as with everything else, the bad ruin it for the good.

My 10, 8, and 5 year old have them, and I don't mind them at all. My kids (including my 5 year old), handle them very well, and don't fly around, knocking into other people. They are not the same as Rollerblades (which they also have - they go MUCH faster on them). I have seen kids fly around on them, getting out of control. However, I've also seen kids use them responsibly.

I don't believe responsible use includes using them in a store or mall.
