Any dog can snap. I understand what you are saying and I know that Pit Bulls have killed people. But to stereotype every dog in a single breed is a little much.
Yes, that is true however most dogs don't have the strength and size to do serious damage. They have a kill instinct, where other dogs might bite for a warning, if they come after you.... they are REALLY coming after you. It's a serious situation.

Tell me about the chihuahua deaths?

It's like me going into a thread about horses and telling people they kick people because they like to hear them scream. :confused3

Dont they? ;) :lmao:

Only time will tell if your pet will go bad.

Hmph. And considering I wasnt there during conception of said pet - and dont know if he is even a Pit Bull, do I still need to sleep with one eye open? Cuz if he's a bulldog - like the shelter and the vet said - which is listed on his papers - then Im good??? :confused3

Any dog can snap. I understand what you are saying and I know that Pit Bulls have killed people. But to stereotype every dog in a single breed is a little much. And yes, it would be possible for that cute little Chihuahua to kill someone and I have Chihuahuas.

Baby Girl Killed by Family Dog
Monday, October 9, 2000

A 6-week-old girl died Saturday night after she was mauled by the family's dog, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The attack occurred in the girl's home in the 15500 block of Fellowship Street in Valinda, an unincorporated area between La Puente and West Covina, Deputy Cruz Solis said.

An uncle baby-sitting the newborn left the child on a bed unattended while he went to the kitchen to prepare a bottle for her, Solis said. When he returned, he found the family's Pomeranian dog on the bed attacking the baby, Solis said.

The man freed the child from the dog and called for help. The baby died shortly after at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, according to Solis.

The parents of the child, whose name has been withheld by officials, were in the Philippines, Solis said.

:sad2: :sad2:

It would be so easy to post article after article on pit bull attacks. but I am not going to waste my time :thumbsup2

It's a personal opinion. Allowed on the DIS, no? or do I need a link for everything?

I'm not doing the research for you. You can search it yourself. Search pit bull attacks and see how often they occur.

***do I need to post this again****

Pits are the Dog Du Jour. Sure youll find stories about attacks, because people like you eat them up! No one wants to hear about the lab, or the poodle. It isnt newsworthy enough.

I find it an absolute shame that all Im attempting to do is bring awareness on an issue, tell my experience with it - and youre telling me to 'watch my back'. Why?

Media Bias: The Pit Bull Paparazzi
Consider how the media reported four incidents that happened between August 18th and August 21st, 2007.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A study by the National Canine Research Council reveals biased reporting by the media, its devastating consequences for dogs and the toll it takes on public safety.

Consider how the media reported four incidents that happened between August 18th and August 21st:

August 18, 2007 - A Labrador mix attacked a 70-year-old man sending him to the hospital in critical condition. Police officers arrived at the scene and the dog was shot after charging the officers. This incident was reported in one article and only in the local paper.

August 19, 2007 - A 16-month old child received fatal head and neck injuries after being attacked by a mixed breed dog. This attack was reported two times by the local paper only.

August 20, 2007 - A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized after having his ear torn off and receiving severe bites to the head by a medium-sized mixed breed dog. This attack was reported in one article and only in the local paper.

August 21, 2007 - A 59-year-old woman was attacked in her home by two Pit bulls and was hospitalized with severe injuries.

This attack was reported in over two hundred and thirty articles in national and international newspapers, as well as major television news networks, including CNN, MSNBC and FOX.

"Clearly a fatal dog attack by an unremarkable breed is not as newsworthy as a non-fatal attack by a pit bull" says Karen Delise, researcher for the National Canine Research Council.

People routinely cite media coverage as “proof” that pit bulls are more dangerous than other dogs. Costly and ineffective public policy decisions are being made on the basis of such "proof". While this biased reporting is not only lethal to an entire population of dogs; sensationalized media coverage endangers the public by misleading them about the real factors in canine aggression.

Okay I have a monster living next door to me that the owners seem to think its "nice" but the FIRST words they said to me were." Dont ever let your kids near our dog it will kill them." Yet they dont leash it. They dont have a fence. They dont stop it from coming over to MY fence. I'm sorry I judge that dog by what the owner have said to me. I fear for my kids lives when its outside ALONE!

Yuck!!! :scared:

That is not a cool way for ANY dog to act. I wouldnt want to own a dog like that. No one should. :sad2:

Pits are the Dog Du Jour.

It's been a couple of decades now.

Far far far far far less deaths related to labs and poodles than pits.

I find it an absolute shame that all Im attempting to do is bring awareness on an issue, tell my experience with it - and youre telling me to 'watch my back'. Why?

Because I don;t want you to be attacked and hurt :confused3 : and I think you wrong and one day you will learn the hard way.

I don;'t want you convincing people that these animals are safe to have around their children.

If you want to own an animal like that, fine. but you are promoting them, how will you feel if someone on the DIS gets one because of you and God Forbid something terrible happens to their child? or maybe you don't care? :confused3

You might as well tell people to bring guns in the house. IMO of course.

I didn't realize coconuts killed so many people. That's staggering. I think my link showed 60 pitbull deaths. So 60 x 60 is 3600 nut deaths? Dang.

I appreicate the concern.

I am not 'promoting' them. I am sharing my experience with my animal. I am not going to get on here, or anywhere - and say anything but what *I* have experience. And *I* have experienced an amazing amazing pet.

Are you aware that Pit's were the "Labs" of the early 20th century? They were family pets, they were *the dog to have* until horrible people started getting hold of them and treating them disgustingly.

I wouldnt want to hear about any animal being treated so poorly and neither should you. I want to let everyone know, I own one - and he is a prime example of what the breed should be. Not a snarling nasty beast. Are there snarling nasty beast pit-bulls? Of course there are - but there are also nasty beasts in any breed.

Its a corny saying - but Ive seen it a lot "Punish the deed - Not the breed". Taking these truly affectionate animals away - only leads to another breed to be the choice of hoodlums. KWIM?

FWIW - Ive also gotten several PM's at various times, since Ive gotten Charley. I think you'd be suprised how many DIS'ers own Pit Bulls.

You are correct that Pits were a family dog. Laura Ingalls Wilder had a Pit Bull (I believe) growing up named Jack.

CR you are a stronger woman then I am. I :worship: you. By this time I would have issued Cass a verbal beat down that would cause be to be banned by the mods. I am strongly against breed specific laws.

My son is currently yanking on the ears of my rottie mix who is covering him with slobbery kisses. I am proud to be her owner.

For almost 11 years I owned the sweetest, kindest most loving dog in the world. Oh by the way he was one of those "demon dogs", a rottweiler. He was brave and loving and loyal to the end. The only time he ever showed the slightest bit of agression was when I was 8 months pregnant and holding the lease of my boxer. My DH was holding my rottie's leash. A unleased dog went after my boxer and my Rottie stepped in and snarled and snapped at the other dog because he thought the dog was going after me. On several occasions before he never got between my boxer and another dog because he knew she could handle herself. I will love that dog until my dying day because of the loyalty he showed me that day.

I am also the crazy woman who called animal control on several occasions to let them know the unleashed poodle next door was attacking my rottie. Animal control thought it was quite hilarious. But I wanted to make sure their was a record of the incidents incase one day my boy decided to stand up for himself.

So in summary you are just as likely to be killed by a poodle or a slobbery lab as you are a dobi, rottie or pit. And I feel sorry for Cass because she has never known the love and loyalty of a big dog. But I have and my life is forever changed by my beautilful boy and I can't wait to see him again at the rainbow bridge.:lovestruc

What a way to go... death by nut :rolleyes1

OMG how could you have such a big dog with big teeth. Weren't you worried it would chew on you if you fell asleep on the couch. You must have been so tired and sleep deprived forom always keeping one eye open. (Is there a mock horror smilie?)

You know what- You worry about your self and we (demon dog lovers and naysayers of breed specific laws) will worry about ourselves. I would rather spend time with CR's dog than worry about getting killed by a coconut (which by the way I will make sure to avaoid like the plauge next time I am in the Caribbean)
