I had to "spank" my 8 year old DS today...it felt weird

I do not hit my kids. When they were toddlers, they would get a swat on the butt, or a slap on the hand if they did something that they knew they were not supposed to, and it could cause harm.

For some reason, my 8yo DS mistreats our kitten. He holds her the wrong way, I caught him trying to kick her the other day. I have spoken to him about how he treats her, and I punish him each time. Well, today, I was in a "mood" and I walk in and find he is hold her by her front paws only! He could of very easily snapped her paws. I lost it, I walked over, grabbed his arm and spanked his butt. I then sent him to his room.

It felt weird spanking him at his age. But I am at my wits end. Hopefully, the spanking "shocked" some sense into him.

OP, I would definitely take a firm stance on how your DS treats the kitten. You did the right thing. Having said that, you are probably about to get flamed to a crisp. Zip up your suit, suge.

I don't think there is anything wrong with spanking, sometimes that is the only thing left TO do. It will be ok.

I didn't get spankings at that age, I got beatings. So, I am determined to break the cycle. It felt weird, because I don't think he has had a spanking since he was about 4 years old. And he is so much bigger now!

I'm not going to flame you. I think you did the right thing in this case. Sometimes a spanking is the only thing that will work. You didn't beat him by any means and hopefully he will think about that spanking the next time he wants to mistreat the kitten.

I really don't want people to jump on her back. It seemed like they were just waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it doesn't have to! Not every difference of opinion needs to be a fight!
