I had to "spank" my 8 year old DS today...it felt weird

Spanking is appropriate punishment at times.

My rules:

never when angry
never harder than I would just playing around
never with anything but my hand
not unless I've exhausted a number of other options

Fortunately, haven't had to in several years.
Maybe the reason you feel weird, or maybe guilty, is because you hit your child in anger and probably far too hard.

For what it's worth, I don't agree with hitting children.

WOW, a post of mine being dug up after 7+ months, and it is on a controversial issue. Lucky me!

:rotfl: I was a little surprised when I saw the date of the OP!

Kind of timely, though. We have new kittens, which my 5 1/2 yo son loves. A few days ago he had been playing nicely with the kittens, throwing a ball into the tub (no water in the tub :teeth: ), which the kitten would then play with. I guess the kitten stopped getting the ball and I look up to see my son throw the kitten into the tub. I'm not a big believer of spankings and my older kids rarely if ever got them, but that treatment of the kitten did end up getting Jake a spanking. That behavior has not happened again and yes, I am careful to supervise him with the cats. So interesting that I should now see this post.

We have NEVER spanked/hit my DS and he's 17. I can't think of any instance where I think a child's behavior can't be resolved by a "good old fashioned talking to", it may take several attempts but it will be resolved. I just don't think it's right to resolve to swatting, or whatever you want to call it.

I feel especially now that your son is 8 years old that you should be able to resolve this behavior with the cat by converstations with your son.
Maybe he is jealous about all the attention the cat gets, it could be that simple. If it were me I would give the cat away before I hit my son.
I don't think your a "bad" parent or that you don't love your DS or anything like that, but you did say you felt weird spanking him. JMHO

:rotfl: Lady, you havent' tried to deal with me! My mom is a well respected psychiatrist who had raised 2 children prior to my coming into the world. She & my dad had "reasoned with" & "talked it out" with my older siblings when they got out of hand & it worked. They tried that with me & it was a complete bust. Last time my dad "talked" with me he got "the finger". Yes, I was a total ************ & 2 intelligent & experienced parents couldn't handle me by taking away favorites toys, time outs, denial of priveledges etc. They didn't give up easily & it became "amusing" to me. Finally, in total despair they spanked me. :earseek: Holy krap! That was awful! It worked, too! From then on all they had to do was "threaten" me with a spanking & I straightened up *most times*. I havent proved to be a serial killer as a result & will have a degree in architecture in December. Plan on joining my Dad's firm at that time & live close to parents that I love & adore. No, spanking isn't for everyone but it isn't always a "bad" thing either. You've just got to realize what works for a child as an *individual* & follow through. That's key--always follow through.

Wow - blast from the past.
:rotfl:

Why the bump? I guess something to do with jrydberg?

So did the kid learn to quit bugging the cat? :rotfl2:

This is one of those threads I am going to avoid.

;)

Brandon79, you sound a bit like my 5yo and my DH and I seem a bit like your parents. :rotfl: Yep, I thought I had it all figured out and then Jake came along and humbled me. :teeth:

Once I was at home and we were out in the yard and I made a video on my digital camera of my sister swinging the cat around by it's paws! :earseek:
My sister wasn't trying to hurt it she was just having fun and she likes the cat. We both thought it was hilarious, but "George" the cat wasn't happy...Anyways it was a stray that showed up one day and my sisters kept it. It's never gotten shots or been to a vet and if it's up to my dad it will stay that way! But George isn't allowed in the house, only the garage, so he's pretty tough to begin with!

Why was this dug up from the grave yard? What's going ON here today, anyway???

This thread is like a train wreck...I just can't look away...

Mistreatment of animals is a hot button for me but I won't wade into this one.

So why was this drug up anyway?

I was more than a little freaked when I saw this on the 1st page today. Weirder was I noticed it 2 posts DOWN from my post about my 9yo DS, then I see this from 7+ months ago, when my DS was 8. :confused3

Too funny! The same person didn't bring back both of your posts, did they?

Not, the post about my 9yo was made today. I noticed this post just 2 down from it.

The only other time a post of mine was brought back from the grave after months, was a post about a naked 10yo girl who was in full view of the doorway when I delivered pizza. Not dug up by the same person, but it was strange seeing it again.
