If you are not a member, I don't know how you can get into the DVCmember web site to check a reservation. Is that possible?
I do know, from experience, that if you enter a DVC reservation # into the regular WDW site it will often come back with some kind of not found error. For example, if you try to book ADRs linked to your reservation, it seems to be hit or miss unless you go through the DVCmember site.
So what exactly did the OP try that gave her that scary message?
As to not reaching the DVC members -- people do go on extended vacations without internet access. If they went abroad and they have domestic-only cell phones, they would not be reachable.
