I feel SICK! Please tell me this is a glitch and our trip is not gone!!

So glad it all worked out. Everyone knows that it takes a certain amount of trust to rent directly from someone (DVC or any other rental). I have used VRBO a number of times and always get a little uneasy until I am actually in the property. I am glad that your waitlist came through and I can understand that you became increasingly uneasy when you could not contact the owner over a 3 week period of time.

I don't hold any malice to the owner. I think this is a live and learn situation. Hopefully you will develop a relationship where you will be able to rent in the future from the same owner. Better yet, maybe you will purchase into DVC! :rolleyes1

Glad everything worked out. The owner should have contacted you sooner if not to just let you know you were on a wait list for boardwalk view and currently had a garden view.

I'm glad evrything worked out OK.:woohoo: We haven't ever rented points YET for those same concerns. I think you worded everything well. If the DVC owners knew you would only be communicating through e-mail, they should check it once in a while or told you what was going on.

And you will really enjoy that Boardwalk view :thumbsup2

Thanks so much guys! I can not tell you the relief I feel today! It is nice to have a group to come to when you are that worried about something and get support and possible answers!

We are DEFINITELY looking into buying in ourselves. We have been looking at TSS almost every day lately keeping an eye on prices. I am sure before long we will be trying to buy in ourselves. :thumbsup2

Respectfully, I do not agree. Some people should not rent if they are going to get so upset without having all of the information. The posts on this thread added to the OP's concern.

Renting a reservation to someone doesn't come with a requirement that you check your email. Some people only use email when they have to and since the member wasn't expecting the renter to contact them why would they check?

It's a shame that people are so quick to assume the negative about someone that they don't really even know. :sad2:

:earsboy: Bill

REALLY?? How could you even say that? You do not feel that as a renter...somebody who has handed over $600 to a complete stranger should have ALL of the information? I should not rent from somebody unless I expect to be left in the dark?

I don't mean to be rude but I really disagree! Of course I deserve to have all of the information. It is my vacation. I had no idea I was even on a wait list. I had spoke with this person by phone about getting the view changed since we had not requested the garden view to start with. I was told they would call and get that fixed. One number of our address was wrong too so we had talked about getting that fixed. I was told they would get it fixed and mail me the letter. When the letter came it STILL said Garden View and had the wrong address # on it so I emailed them when it came in just to let them know. I did not hear anything. A couple of weeks later I thought about it and sent a second email. Then about a week ago I sent a 3rd. All were very friendly and just asked about it. Saturday night I just thought maybe I would be able to see according to my online info if it had been fixed so I key in the # only to see SORRY, THIS RESERVATION HAS BEEN CANCELED. Who would NOT be scared to death when they read those words. I have had nothing but total trust for this person the whole time or else I would not have rented points but this really would scare anyone. All I needed to know was that I was on a wait list and I would not have been worried but I did not know that.

You mean to tell me this would not bother you as a renter and b/c I got nervous and came here for advice I should not rent points from anyone? I did not call them that night b/c it was 1am and I had more respect for them that to call and wake them up at that hour.

As far as getting a mod involved. I did not go running to the mods or anything like that. I simply let one of them send them a private message asking that they please get in touch with me. I do not see where the big deal is there. If a member here uses THIS BOARD as a way to rent out their points and then does not go through with their end I will DEFINITELY go to the mods. They do not need to be allowed to do that to anyone else and I would do all I could to make sure they were not able to do that here again. You do not think that is the right thing to do?

Now, in my case this was not the intent of the other party and throughout this thing I never did accuse them of anything...even stated I felt they were trustworthy but was just really worried. I can not imagine anyone thinking that was wrong of me. :sad2:

Sorry to ramble on. I was just shocked to read that you thought a renter did not deserve to stay informed about their trip. :confused3

Yea you will! BWV is the only place I've (thus far) made intentional time for sitting on the balcony. I love watching the activity on the Boardwalk and the Epcot fireworks.

Have also stayed a SSR and OKW and haven't felt the blaconies were as necessary. First stay at AKV coming up this winter, I'm guessing we may live on their balcony. Can't wait to watch the animals from our room.

This is honestly what I am most looking forward to about this trip. :rotfl: I can't wait to just sit out there and take it all in right from the balcony. :) I can't wait!

According to the OP post, they didn't try to contact the member by phone, only by email.
I think this is a good point. We tend to think of email as being reliable but it also has its quirks. For example, my DH sends me email regularly. Every so often an email from him sent from his usual account gets tossed into my "Junk E-mail" folder. This also happens with messages from at least two other people who send me email from time to time. :confused3 I try to remember to check my Junk E-mail folder regularly to see if there are any legitimate messages in there but sometimes I forget to do so, until someone calls me and asks why I didn't respond! Email is convenient but it's good to remember that it isn't perfect.

I'm glad everything is OK with the OP's reservation!

So glad to hear good news for you! Enjoy BW... you'll love your view :)

And I kinda agree with the gist of disneynutz post, renting points from dvc member is not for the faint of heart. On the flip side, the renter SHOULD have emailed or called you and let you know that he/she will be unreachable for x amt of days for whatever reason.

Everytime I rent out my points I always make sure they can reach me within 3 days. If I am to be unreachable more than that I will email to let them know and have them confirm that they got my message.
I think that's just proper communication.

Have a blast OP!

I rent some of our points out from time to time and I do the same thing. Whenever I'm away from Internet access for more than 1 day I notify the families who are renting from us so they don't get alarmed if I don't reply to a message in a timely manner. To me this is just common courtesy.

The two most important elements contrubuting to a successful rental for both parties is trust and communication. If communication fails trust will almost certainly fail soon thereafter.

For the record:

When I became aware of this situation, I contaced the OP and offered to try to contact the member. She accepted my offer and provided the name of the member. I wrote to that member yesterday asking that they contact their renter to re-confirm the reservation.

Within a few hours I received a nice response from the member explaining that a waitlist had been involved ( as suggested by several on this thread) and that they had just discovered that it had come thru on the DVC site.

Since the OP is now happy with their reservation, I am completely satisfied with the end result. The DVC member is a long-time DIS member in good standing, with many satisfied renters who promptly responded when contacted about the situation.

Thanks to all who expressed their concern and suggestions.

Wonderful news! This is EXACTLY what happened! They just sent me an email. They had done a wait-list for Boardwalk view and I had no idea. It came through on the 12th and they were not notified so they just checked it and sent me the info.

I can not tell you guys how much better I feel right now. This scared me to death...lol I can not imagine this actually happening to somebody and them really loosing their vacation. :(

On a not so good note- I guess the renter was quite upset with me for posting on the dis and a webmaster contacting them to ask about it which I feel SO BAD about. I guess I should not jump to conclusions and open my big mouth so fast. I hope they will forgive me for posting. I did not give their name to ANYONE but a webmaster so I do hope they are not too upset with me.

Thank you all so much for giving me options for what may have been going on and helping me feel better today! You are the best!
I am so glad it worked out and for the better. You did nothing wrong other than to say you are upset and concerned. You never listed a name. They should have answered your emails.

Hope you have a wonderful vacation.

The owner has every right to be upset...with himself...for not replying to any of the 3 emails you've sent him over the last month!

There is no reason whatever for you to feel bad about reaching out to others on the DIS or for the Webmaster contacting him on your behalf. You did nothing wrong. Quite to the contrary an informed renter, like you, is a good renter as far as I'm concerned. If anything he should hope you forgive him for putting you through this. Fact is this easily could have been avoidded if he had been paying attention to his rental.

I'm happy things worked out and all is well. Have a great vacation.

EXACTLY!!!....I Could not have said this better myself.

Respectfully, I do not agree. I am an owner and I know that 99% of the risk is on the renter. You can very easily make a reservation, send someone a letter, and then after getting the money, cancel the reservation.

The renter cannot even call Member Services to get any type of information so they are left in the dark HOPING and TRUSTING until the day the vacation comes that they actually have a reservation & all is okay.

I know if I rented, I would be checking regularly. I would want to know that I could get a quick response. I, as an owner, would want to provide that to a renter. You can call Disney seven days a week if you reserved a room through them. If you are going to rent points to a person, I don't think getting back to someone in three or four days is asking too much. Don't rent your points if you can't be more responsible. I have to wonder if the only reason they checked on it was because of this forum.
If you are someone who does not use email, you should provide an alternative method of communication such as a phone number. Rent your points professionally.

.

That's not true. Yes there are more risks to the renter for sure. Absolutely. However the owner is responsible for any damage to the unit.

And paypal. There are two sides to protect in every DVC transaction. The owner needs to be protected as well. When I first rented - my renter wanted me to do Paypal. I didn't have it but thought - let me come here and see people's thoughts on it helping trust. Well I got a surprise. Many DVCers came on to tell me negative stories they had with Paypal with their businesses - mostly delayed/held? payment or none with grievances (or whatever the word was). And they openly wondered if a renter could do the same if they had a issue with the vacation (obviously not likely but they wondered IF). Another talked about how someone stealing their identity though her Paypal account and it was a horror story and she felt Paypal did not help.

Yes, I realize many love Paypal and do great business with them. I am not anti-paypal. I own DVC but rented last year using Paypal requested by the owner. But the conversation on here was eye opening.

OP - I'm very happy it all worked out. :goodvibes

I do have a curiousity though. Did you rent knowing/saying BW view or no BWV transaction? That was not clear. (I'm unsure if you even knew it was a distinct booking category so I'm certainly not trying to stir the pot - simply nosy and curious :lmao:)
