I don't own a dog but it seems like the neighborhood dogs like to use my yard to do their business. Is there any non toxic/deterrent things I can do to keep them off my lawn?

I would talk to the neighbors. Is this while on leash (out for a walk)? Or are they letting the dogs out lose and they are coming into your yard?

I am a dog owner and NEVER let my dog go on other lawns. I have caught neighbors letting their dogs go on my lawn without cleaning it up a few times, and I have politely but seriously asked them to clean it up. I offer them a bag or the hose, or they have come back with a bag later. There are others I have not caught. I usually just grumble a little and clean it with a hose.

I have considered posting a polite sign, putting up a fake security camera, or even taking actual photos (without people's faces) and putting them on our neighborhood Nextdoor site, but I have not actually done any of those things yet. I've always chilled out before doing so.

You could get a security camera and film who is crapping and peeing in your yard. Esp. if they are not picking it up. You can print off a pic. and kindly ask neighbors to pick up after their dog.

You could get a motion detection sprinkler. That does require setting up a hose in your yard with a device, like "The Scarecrow". It would work but it would not look pretty in your yard.

Dogs "mark" their territories with urine. I would also try to "neutralize" the urine odor in your yard.

Let's put it this way...If you have multiple peeing animals on your grass, it is like your yard has a NEON SIGN saying "PEE HERE". Water your yard to try dilute the urine.

There is nothing "smell wise" you can put down. Dogs love a good STINKY smell.

IMG_5743.jpg We had this issue. We are at the end of our street with a very large grassy area on one side of our home. And people used to just walk right across through our grass across the driveway and across the other side of the yard. And often their dogs would stop and pee or poop in my grass. And we have visible security cameras on our home.
So I picked up a few of these and placed them accordingly. Worked to stop the needless walking across my yard and driveway and defecating in my grass. Confrontation free. Seems to make people think about what they're doing which is enough to make them move along.

Reminds me of a sign my dad had in the flower garden above a fountain in our pool area. "I don't swim in your toilet, please don't pee in my pool".

We do have a dog but she is potty pad trained and refuses to poop outside, she will pee though. There is one spot in our front yard that all the neighborhood dogs like to poop in. We've actually been out in the backyard and seen one old man walking his dog and he let him do it. Most of the people will carry a bag and clean it up, at least if we are in the yard. We also have coyotes in our neighborhood so it could be them doing it. Since it's in an island that just has wood chips in it, we don't say anything.

We have a lot of folks out walking dogs in my neighborhood, and they all carry plastic bags, so we are fortunate. Now, some neighbors 2 blocks away have "NO PEE" signs up like these, I think it is a bit much to be concerned about dogs peeing on my mailbox post, but maybe that's just me.

It would be great if all pet owners cleaned up after their pets. But they don't. And female dogs tend burn the lawn when they pee on it. Peeing on the mailbox post or the trees is not a big deal. It's when they walked across my lawn and my driveway stopping to let their dogs urninate and poop and not cleaning it up. I would never ever presume to walk across anyone's lawn and driveway with my dogs or for any reason. Let alone allow them to potty while I just stand there looking at my cell phone. So, the little dog sticks did the trick. It seems to just make people think about what they're doing.

We've used moth balls at the end of our yard. The strong odor keeps the dogs from stopping in our yard, but they need to be replaced every couple of months as they wear away.

I have three dogs, and they use our backyard. I would never dream about letting them go in the neighbors yard.

The best story about dogs going in neighbor's yards was told to me by my former supervisor. One of their neighbors had Lab that would go in everyone else's front yards. The neighbors complained to the owner, but the owner didn't care. One day, after watching the Lab do his business in his yard, another neighbor picked up the still warm pile of poo in his hand, went over the the dog owner's house and rang the door bell. When the owner appeared at the door, the other neighbor told him "I think this belongs to you" and dumped the pile of poo in the owner's hands! The owner suddenly cared after that! :teeth:

I am a dog owner and always clean up after my dog. When we go for walks I take her around my yard first to do her business or take her to the "public" areas of our subdivision. By public I don't mean where people are but the areas where there are woods, no houses.
It infuriates me when someone leaves their dog's poop in my yard. Its not that hard to clean it up, and a responsible pet owner does.
There are a few people who put up little signs that say "curb your dog" on my street. One of the guys has a camera. His next door neighbors just let their dog out the door and she goes where ever and the comes back in.
Try the sign, and if that doesn't work look into your local laws, I'm pretty sure most places have laws where you need to pick up after your dog. Report them if they still do it.

Sorry to be negative but we had a problem with dogs peeing on the flowers around our front sidewalk. I loved those flowers but the dog pee killed them. And once one dog made my flowers their pee place then other dogs peed there also. I replanted and tried to grow them for several years but it was of no use. It infuriated me to see dog owners walking their dogs on a leash stop and letting them pee at my house. I finally gave up. My yard has no flowers but I have one less thing to get angry about. It does stink that selfish dog owners get to determine what my yard looks like.

It boggles my mind that a dog owner walks their dog away from their yard to pee or poop somewhere else and thinks it could ever be OK. Let them soil their own yard.

We moved into a brand new small development 11 months ago, we are one block of homes and they were far from cheap to build.
I am so frustrated about these people who are letting their dogs have a field day in our grass. My husband cleans it up regularly.
I want to scream at these people so bad, "please clean up after your dogs".
We have our first resident association meeting next month, and I will be there for sure voicing my opinion about solutions for this.
anyway, thank you for the vent.

Black pepper works when you sprinkle it on the grass, but here in South Florida the daily summer rain washes it away quickly.

Me too. So MANY dog owners do this in my neighborhood. They walk to them to the pool area to pee and poop.

We haven't had a dog in years. But honestly, I just figure dogs are gonna pee. I stopped putting flowers down by the sidewalk and really don't care if they pee. The poop is another matter. That can be and should be picked up. The neighbors used to have a dog they would let out to do its business (their yard wasn't fenced) and I ended up with dog poop in my front yard all that time. That made me mad.

I'm not a dog owner. I'm sure letting a dog pee or poop on your grass might cause some discoloration, but I really don't see why it is such a big deal if the owner cleans it up. Maybe people are just good about it in our neighborhood, but I rarely see poop when we go on walks. I've never met a dog that liked going on cement and there are no public gassy places. Where are they going to go? You're going to ask Fido to politely hold it until you get home?

I completely understand being annoyed if the evidence is not picked up.

Yeah, I'm not getting the outrage over dogs peeing during a walk either. I try to be as polite as possible: never allow the dogs on the lawn side (only the little strip between the sidewalk and road) and they 95% of the time pee on the pine needle bedding around the trees rather than on the grass. But, I walk my dogs about 6+ miles per day and one is a puppy. I'm fairly experienced with dog training, but I don't know how to prevent them from ever urinating during a walk outside.

If you don't clean up after your dog you stink as bad as the pooh they leave. If you let your dog kill peoples plantings same rule applies. However, your lawn is not a temple. It gets defecated on all day and all night. squirrels, birds, raccoon, deer, fox, rabbits, bats etc... You are bound to have some of these and they all do it on your lawn. Plus let's not forget the worst offenders. Insects. They do it as well, plus leave their decaying bodies everywhere. So don't pretend dog urine is going to tip the balance.
