For a king size bed????

We'll be staying at the Carribean Beach and was getting quotes together. A king size bed costs $22.50 more per night! At least to me that makes NO sense!

With a king size bed there will be only one or two people, less mess to clean up, less bedding to clean, fewer towels to wash...just overall LESS so they charge you MORE????

Anybody shed any light on this to clear it up for me?

Supply and demand-they can get people(like me) to pay more to guarantee they get a king bed.

It's the same as paying more for a preferred location or view. People are willing to do it.

They charge more because they can. Some people are willing to pay more to get a King bed.

What others have said.. It's possible that there are less rooms with a king bed in them so those rooms are at a premium. Also, rooms with king sized beds tend to have other furniture in them as well making the room seem more spacious and luxurious. The combination of those 2 things usually equates to more money.

Most hotels, not just Disney World, will charge extra for a king bed. I have no idea why. Ticks me off because we have a king bed at home and if we have to take two double beds, we each take one.

I'm also curious why when we do get a king bed, they almost always are handicapped accessible. Do people in wheelchairs not have families? I always feel guilty requesting a king bed knowing it could be used for someone that has more pressing problems than being used to a king bed.

Same reason I still question the extra charge for more than two adults in a room but kids are free. Kids usually make more of a mess in the room than adults do.

I'm sure there's an explanation but it's not Disney World exclusive. It's common occurrance.

When we started going to WDW it was one of those-requested not quanteed things. And now they charge for it, just like the bunk beds. Because we always booked king but only got it once.

Here's the real kicker-Why can you guarantee a king bed at moderate resorts by paying extra but they are still only a request at value and deluxe resorts?

There are hardly any king bed rooms at values and moderates. For that matter, there are very few at deluxes. Most people want 2 beds.

I've been wondering about a variation of this myself - am planning a trip with my parents in NOv and we're going to be sharing a room. My parents are both mildly handicapped and an accessible room (not havign to step into a tub to get to the shower, really) is easier for them both, so I looked into getting that kind of room. But, was surprised to find that the handicapped rooms ONLY come with 1 king bed. Which won't work for me (30 yo) to be sharing with my 2 parents!

It just seems to me that the people who would need these beds would likely travel with companions/helpers who aren't necessarily a spouse. I know I also have traveled with my grandmother and aunt who both needed accessible bathrooms, and needed me to help them travel. I wouldn't have wanted to have to have shared a bed with them! And, it was far easier for them to have me with them in the room rather than have a separate room for me (especially my grandmother who was blind needed someone in an unknown place with her).

I don't understand why those rooms wouldn't be available with 2 beds. I know that's not the topic at hand, but just something that's been on my mind....

I believe the reason the accessible rooms all have king beds is the reason that I prefer a room with a king bed - with only one bed in the room there is more floor space, so there is more room for a wheelchair to navigate.

I'm alarmed by this comment... We had been considering AKL for our honeymoon. We can't get a guaranteed king size bed there? Frankly, separate beds are a bad way to start a marriage, and we would not stay at a hotel if it turned out we couldn't share a bed. Do we need to stay at a moderate to be sure to share a bed???

Thanks

No, not guaranteed. Can you share a queen? That's what the 2 beds in a deluxe room are.

Sharing a queen would certainly work. However, having a king sized bed just seems like an important ingredient for a romantic honeymoon. :confused3

I understand. If it's really important to you, the only place you can actually reserve a king bed room is at a moderate resort.

You could end up having your request met at a deluxe but there wouldn't be any guarantee of that.

Yeah, a king bed does add a bit to the romantic factor. The best you can do is when you make your reservation, request a king bed and say it's because you are on your honeymoon. That will be noted on your reservation. If that's really important to you, make that your only request (other than non smoking, of course). When we stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, I could have gotten a king bed which I requested. But my most important request was a nice view. And the room we had did NOT disappoint.

That is ABSOLUTELY NOT the case. We've stayed in a room at the GF that had two queens and a daybed and a roll-in shower.

Really? Well, I was looking at AKL, so maybe that was the difference?
At least, they SAID that the handicap rooms were 1 king bed. I'll have to look more to see....but, luckily, it's not that big of a deal for us either way. Just a nice convenience, not a necessity, so we'd probably rather leave it available for those who REALLY need it anyway.
