I feel so bad. I was trimming my 10week old puppy's toenails and I cut the quick. It bled for a minute then she was fine, playing, running etc. Then it started bleeding again. Now she is sleeping and it isn't bleeding anymore. I don't have a styptic pencil (actually I did, can't find it now)
Will she be ok? She seems like she really didn't even notice it when it happened, I was shocked at the blood because she didn't even make a peep. I feel like an idiot for trimming her nail too close, all of her other ones were done, it was the last nail.

Is there anything else I should do?

poor baby!! (both of you!)

my vet told me that once the bleeding stops you're okay. But, I've never had any first hand experience. good luck!

My vet told me not to cut our dog's nails until he was six months old, because I'd just end up cutting the vein.

He's an old fashioned country vet so maybe he's being conservative. Those nails are sharp! I've been filing them, though.

Our vet just told me the other day to cut the tips off. I have two other dogs so I am pretty used to doing them, but I never did that....

It dosen't seem very far down. When I look at the nail quick on her next toe it is just a hair above where I cut...

Can they get infected? I am so worried now....:scared:

again, I don't have first hand experience but talked to my vet about this in detail--I've always hated clipping nails. Infection can happen, but it's not a big risk.

Make yourself feel better and call the vet tomorrow. The puppy's fine right now, so it can wait til then. And stop being so hard on yourself.

Next time you trim your pup's nails and you trim it down to far, stick his nail in a bar of soap if you don't have any styptic pencils. The vet I used to work for would tell the clients that.It works pretty good too:thumbsup2

I've accidentally done it before but only on cats. We have a cat that squirmed and was horrid about getting the nails cut. The vet even accidentally did it once (she was that bad). She never got infected though, but I would look once in a while to make sure it looks normal. It's a bit more normal occurance thatn you might think with little babies around. If it isn't bleeding anymore and the pup shows no sign of pain, I am sure it will be fine

Thanks all. You have no idea how much better I feel reading that it will most likely be ok.
(((HUGS)))

Aw, I did that with our dog once too. She was ok, but I think I was traumatized. I always have them done when she's at the vet now. I'm afraid to touch them!

My ex-husband and I were trimming our new baby daughter's nails in the NICU - yes, that's the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit!!!!!! We cut the skin on the top of one of her fingers. I was so afraid they would make us give the baby back!!!!! The nurse just laughed, thank goodness - after she made sure the baby was fine.

Oh, God, I still sometimes get chills thinking about it....

If you ever do it again, you can also pack the nail in flour. That will stop the bleeding.

I am sure the pup will be fine!

If it bleeds again put some cornstarch on it, and put some neosporin on it.
