My DH and I were getting ready to go to bed around 11pm and I went in to check on our DS and I noticed something floating in his fish tank:( We lost Mickey tonight. I have no idea when it happend but Matt did not notice it but every morning he feeds his fish and it just kills me because we just went through this a few weeks ago:( I am hoping that he is not upset like he was last time, we tried to explain to him how goldfish do not usually live a long time...but he is only 4 and I dont know if he will understand.

Plus, its 1:30am and I am WIDE awake:(

I hope your son doesn't take the death of Mickey too hard. Maybe you can make a small funeral for him and plant some type of plant or flower where he is buried then you son will be able to see that Mickey is giving something back to your family even though he is no longer with you. I think this will make it easier for your son to understand about Mickey's death.
I hope you get enough rest.

I'm so sorry...we went thru that a few years back. My littlest son at the time time was 6 and was devasted. We had had Burt and Ernie for over 4 years!! I know...really long for a goldfish but we did!

We had to take him down to the river because my son thought he would rather be amongst friends so thats what we did but he was still very sad.

I hope Sunday goes well for you dear with your little one. I just got in from ER and won't be asleep for hours...it was a long night..full moon here...YIKES!

Esmerelda

I'm so sorry about Mickey.

A few years ago my children had a fish named

Lucky, then came. . .

Lucky 2, then came . . .

Lucky 3.

We finally gave up on fish!

Thank you everyone! He actually took it pretty well, he was sad for a few minutes but seemed okay when we told him he was with his brother Silver who died 2 weeks ago:(

Fish are pets too, always sad to see life leave, and good to see Matt learning. Hope you get a nap in later, Lisa.

Lisa, I remember your original post and how Mickey "came back to life", this is sad for your son I know...my son went through it too with goldfish.

I didn't want to keep having to go through this, so we bought him a Beta fish (chinese fighting fish). They cannot live with another Beta or they will fight to their death (I'm told).

They are beautiful! My son picked a pretty blue one, that shows different colors when he turns or the sun is lighting the room. Their fins when they move are mesmerizing. Dylan's 1 gallon tank is on his bookshelf by his bed and falls asleep watching it.

They live a long time. We've had this one over a year now. They come from Asia and live in mud banks. So the dirtier the water the better. You should not change the water more than 2x in a month and you do not use a filter. Just plain old water and colored rocks and such and the fish is good to go. I haven't changed the water for at least a month now and you wouldn't know it.

I would highly recommend this type of fish for your son. I hope Mickey's passing will not be too hard on him.

Lorix2, I was going to suggest the same exact fish! My older brother had two for a very long time, until one mysteriously died. But now it is like a year and half later, and the other one is very much alive.

I don't know if you're ready for another goldfish or not, but they're on sale at Petsmart this week for 20 cents a piece.

Sorry to hear that Mickey's reprieve didn't last long.

I'm glad your son isn't too very sad about it.

I also recommend getting a beta. Those fish live a very long time (unlike goldfish).

My dd Ashli had a beta when she was younger. This fish was half red and half blue. Ashli loved this fish. She was constantly going over to his tank to look at him and talk to him. One day I walked over to his tank and Max was floating upside down. UH OH, big time trouble was coming. I decided I'd try to get another fish at the store and replace Max and maybe we could avoid all the tears and heartache that would come. Well I found another fish that was half red, half blue but it was a bit more blue than Max had been. I made the switch and hoped she wouldn't notice. The next day I was doing laundry and Ashli came running up to me with her fish in her hand yelling "Mom! Look, Max is turning more blue!" I told her she couldn't take her fish out of the water, that would kill him. She looked at me and said "Well it didn't hurt him yesterday". LOL. (BTW, Max the second survived his trip out of the fish tank and lived a long time afterwards)
