I came across this quote.....

I disagree. I think there is a third type of person that has not actually suffered but thinks others should. I think there are people that enjoy the sufferings of others and feel smug at their self-perceived superiority. I hate those people and think they are sadists.

As with anything I think it depends. Of course, I would not say, "I suffered so you should too," at least about severe/major issues. However, I think sometimes there is too much of the other side too.

For example, when you get your first "real" job and you have limited vacation time, I don't want to hear that you only have x days off when others have y. I put that in the camp of been there, done that and you will survive. I don't know if I would really consider that a case of suffering though.

For a long time now, I've considered the whole idea of, "“I suffered, so why shouldn’t they?” a sign of emotional immaturity.

When I was young I was in that camp, but over the years, life experience has taught me that we are not all the same, that we don't all have the same brains and abilities, and that sheer dumb luck plays a large role in the opportunities you manage to take advantage of in life, and in the misfortunes that befall you. I thought at the time that overcoming hardship was just a matter of fortitude and endurance, and that there was no valid excuse for failing to climb out of poor circumstances.

I'm older now, and -- I think-- wiser, and I realize what a snotty arrogant attitude that was on my part. I have a lot more compassion now that I have decades of being a grownup behind me.

And also the "I haven't suffered much, and I hate to think of anyone suffering" type.

So basically four types.

There are Two Kinds of People:
Those who think, “I don’t want anyone to suffer like I did.”
And
Those who think, “I suffered, so why shouldn’t they?”

I like to think I'm the former and don't really like the latter.

No matter what other faults I have, I am definitely the former!

Could there actually by 4 types? I'm the "type" that thinks people wouldn't have to suffer near as much as they do if only they were willing to learn from the experiences of others.

Okay what is considered suffering?

Life throws curveballs but my suffering might not be yours.

I wouldn't like to breath the same air as people who think others should suffer.

Nb. I don't consider things like minimal vacation time, having to go to school, not having a yearly overseas lengthy vacation, missing out on BOG ressie (ha) to be suffering. Or other minor stuff.

I think that's a good question. Majority probably jump to more extreme definitions of things like disease, death, abuse but there are also things that happen in life that one would consider suffering that another would not.

That's just a variant of the type that thinks some others should suffer.
No; exactly the opposite. Now granted, I'm not talking about tragic losses, catastrophic natural disasters or grave illnesses here, I'm talking about life-choices that cause people a lot of heartache. Have you ever watched someone you love barrel head-on into chaos of their own volition? Knowing they have the information and ability to "save" themselves? When they simply won't heed wise advice or take caution from having observed others making the exact same mistakes? I would love to save them from such unnecessary pain but time and time again I've grieved with and for people who simply refuse to learn anything except the hard way.

Exactly. That "free will" business is such a drag. If only the world would listen to the know-it-alls among us, we'd all be perfectly happy.
So then you're quite content watching people suffer the consequences of their own actions - no matter how devestating?
