Let's play a game - what would you do? I'll fill in more info tomorrow sometime ;)

Your boss decides to take your department out for lunch to celebrate the holidays and is picking up the check. You go to a casual eatery (wing place) that has a lunch buffet plus a regular menu. Standard stuff, wings, sandwiches, etc.

I'd probably do a sandwich. :)

whatever I was in the mood for but probably the buffet it have a little of everything on it.

My boss (previous job) used to do this and I always got the buffet because I always figured that was what he had budgeted for. One co-worked used to (annually) pretend to be considering the surf and turf. I never found her joke amusing.

Also, like mentioned above, if everyone does the same thing, then you will eat at the same time. If some do the buffet and some order off the menu, you wil end up with some eating and some waiting.

Generally speaking, if I’m going to a place that has a buffet, it’s because I want the buffet. So, unless my favorite dish is missing from the buffet, buffet all the way.

I'd order whichever option was most likely to work with my dietary restrictions. If that wasn't a consideration, then whatever I was in the mood for, assuming other people were ordering both options as well. I wouldn't want to be the odd man out waiting for my menu entree while everyone else was halfway finished with their buffet selections.

I'd want to be especially mindful of prices with someone else paying. In many places, the buffet is the most budget friendly option. If not, I'd order whatever was.

If everyone is doing the buffet, then the buffet. If everyone is ordering off the menu, then I'll go that way too. Usually though places with a buffet are all about that and ordering off the menu is sort of pointless most of the time.

I've gotten to a point in my life where buffets skeeve me out, therefore I'd order wings and a side salad or maybe fries, I happen to love wings so I'd be very happy with this choice.
If the boss takes the dept. out, I think employees should feel comfortable ordering whatever they want off of the menu presented.

For me, it would depend on what everyone else was ordering. If everyone else was getting the buffet, that's also what I would probably get because, like other posters mentioned, I wouldn't want to be waiting on my food while everyone else was already eating from the buffet.

However, if there were some other people ordering off the menu, I'd order something "lunch-ish" off the menu as well (since I'm generally not a fan of buffets) - a sandwich or the soup & salad depending on what I was in the mood for & what looked appetizing to me at the time.

But I wouldn't order a dinner entree at lunch, &, if someone else is paying for my meal, I'm definitely not going to order the most expensive item on the menu & would be conscious of the menu prices & order accordingly.

We used to go to a place like that - casual-ish Italian. For lunch they had a "prepare your own pasta bar". All different noodles, add-ins, sauces, toppings.

Most of my coworkers would get in line for that. I never did; too much food mid-day. So, I would be waiting at the table alone or with one other coworker, waiting for my salad/soup/fish...

Generally I would order a sandwich for lunch, but as others have said, if everyone else is doing the buffet, I would do that just so I wasn't sitting there waiting on my food while everyone else was eating.

Yea I'm not really much of a buffet guy. I imagine people reaching over the food, hairs falling out into the food. Just can't deal with that.

Depends on what they had that was safe for me to eat. Since I have medical restrictions, I would need to know what was on the buffet vs what was on the menu.

Buffets skeeve me out as well and are pretty subpar food wise. Plus I’ve never been one to get additional plates so they’re wasted on me. I’d get a sandwich. Wouldn’t bother me if everyone was eating before I was. Chances are they’d still be eating when it came.

Either a sandwich or soup/salad. Definitely would not pick the most expensive entree on the menu because bosses paying for this sort of thing usually pay attention to details like that.

Not having seen the menu, I can't give a definitive answer, BUT I never order the buffet. I would order something off the menu, most likely a sandwich or a salad that looked interesting.

I'm having buffet. I won't expect it to be great, but then probably nothing on the menu would be either. I appreciate being hosted for lunch!
