I always try to be aware of the price of the item I'm ordering if someone else is treating. I will UNIVERSALLY go with something in the lower 25% of the available items. Might be the buffet, might be a lower priced soup/sandwich/salad. And, I won't get "extras" (like appetizers or dessert). I would stick with water as my beverage, unless the host ordered a beverage then I would go with that category of item.

When I worked, I treated my staff to lunch at a restaurant, or I had a catered meal at my home. My expense. The most awkward thing for me was when employees gave me holiday gifts. I'm glad they thought of me, but I made so much more than them that I found it a little odd.

Agree totally. I have an employee who brings me souvenirs and gives me Christmas gifts, and it's somewhat uncomfortable. I've always learned to give down, not up. I give Amazon gift cards. Boring, yes, but it works.

I don't know, it is a bit strange I guess. OTOH, I would want people ordering what makes them happy. If she wanted surf and turf, I say go for it. Otherwise, you should have stated that they can order what they want, but can't go over a certain dollar amount (who is tacky now?) :rotfl2:

Anyway, I may have rolled my eyes a bit, but if budget was a concern (which does not seem the case here) or if I wanted to dictate what people ate (again not the case here), I would have catered the lunch and not taken them to a place and given them free reign to order off the menu. It was nice of you to take them out and I'm sure they appreciated it, especially surf and turf lady!

I'm diabetic so probably the buffet so I can pick and choose what I can eat.

I knew someone who worked at a buffet restaurant back in the day and because of the stories I've heard I don't eat buffets.
I'd order off of the menu, soup and salad.
