My DH decided it would be really nice if he treated his crew at work to dinner, and decided to bring hot dogs and all the fixin's to work last night (Saturday). Except he doesn't TELL me this until 3 PM on Friday, and I need to get all this stuff so he can bring it to work on Saturday night, so basicly I have 24 hours to get enough "stuff" for 48 hot dogs. And before you ask why I have to do all the shopping when this whole thing is DH's idea, if I made DH do it it would have cost twice as much for half the amount. It's more work for me, but cheaper if I just do it! :)

So, with no time to stock up on coupons (we don't usualy eat hot dogs or lots of toppings at home so I don't save those kind of coupons) I decided to just add on those items to my shoping trip on Saturday morning, thankfully I already had a trip to Cocsto planned, and just added a stop at Meijer's for the things Costco didn't have.

So, for $48 I got...

48 Vienna hot dogs - costco
48 Mary Anne's hot dog buns - costco
4 pack of Heinz condements (2 big ketchup, 1 big mustard, 1 big relish) - costco
1 gianormous bag of ruffles chips -costco
2 huge cans of Hormel chili - meijers
1 big white onion (for DH to chop up, I sure as heck wasn't going to do it!) - meijers

That works out to about $1 a dog, less if there is enough condements left over to use the next time DH decided to bring dinner. I think that's pretty good for short notice! Hopefully next time DH will give me some notice so I can be on the look out for coupons/sales that will let me get it all for even less.

I don't think you bought enough. Most guys can easily eat 2-3 dogs and one (even big bag) is certainly not enough chips for that size group.

How the heck did you get 48 hot dogs AND 48 buns??:thumbsup2

Nice of you to do that for Dh and his crew!

I have to say any sort of free food is better then a kick in the pants, it just shows them he appreciates them, no matter what it is!

48 is what my DH requested, so that's what I bought. DH's crew is only six guys, plus himself, although DH planned on left overs so if other crews wanted to stop by there'd be extra. If it isn't enough, well that's just not my problem! :)

:rotfl: I was shocked myself, but it just worked out that way! The Vienna packs had 24 each, so I bought two. The buns were 16 each, so I bought three.

I don't think she told us how big the group is, she just said she needed 48 hot dogs?

Oops - the OP beat me to it :)

For someone who had no time to prepare, I think you did amazing! :thumbsup2

I know what you mean about husbands being expensive! I had to bite my tongue last week when my husband and his brother did the Mother's Day BBQ. BIL spent $25 on potato salad at the corner deli! Hubby bought the pre-formed, ground steak hamburger patties. I refused to look at the register tape to see what it all cost. I wasn't going to let it ruin my day! :)

If that's not enough hot dogs for 6 people then there's a problem! It's nice of your husband to do this. But it sure can get expensive trying to treat even small crews!!!

Maybe you should play the lottery with the number 48

I also agree that husbands are expensive! Two weeks ago DH sprang it on me that he was hosting a BBQ for his staff. I ran out that morning and spent $100 on hamburgers, veggie burgers, buns, chips, soda, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and dessert.

I think is was so nice of your husband to think of his crew. U shop because u can make the money stretch and I understand that. I would be thankful my husband had a job and I think u r making a mountain out of a molehill.

I'm sure she is thankful. She was just doing a little venting to those of us who would understand! BTW-- I totally get it-- A few months ago I had a conference to attend for work so I was out of town. DH decided to make pizza with our boys. Well, the boys LOVED it, but it cost DH something like $25 dollars at the store!! We could have had 2 pizzas delivered for that price, but then again, he was making memories that night along with the pizza ;)! --Katie

I agree,

My husband (of 15 years) is banned from shopping with me... if I could, I'd ban him from shopping AT ALL!!! Because, yep, they're expensive! But, to be fair, I knew that coming into the deal... we were both in the military and on temporary assignment to a school... well, he took his food budget to the store and blew... I don't know how much, but to a 20-year-old-me, it seemed like a fortune... and less than a week later, he was "out of food." So I took the $50-odd he had left to the store -- without him!-- and he had meals and snacks to last until the next payday... sometimes I think that's why he married me... :rotfl:

It's a fun story to have in my back pocket when he accuses me of being stingy.... but different people have different priorities... we can afford these days for him to buy his silly video games... and his piano that he rarely plays is a great place to set my drink when I'm watching TV! :lmao:

If you think Husbands are expensive, you should see my wife!!!

I am the bargain shopper at the store. I ran a kitchen/catering business for about 4 years, so I know a few tricks. If she needs a bag of shredded cheese, its the first one she sees. Doesn't matter the price, size or anything like that.

Oh, and I might have a few things that make me expensive too :rolleyes1

I was wondering the same thing. How do you get exactly the same number of buns as hot dogs? lol!
And-I'm glad I don't stress over stuff like this. How great that you knew what to do OP but if my DH wanted to feed his crew, I'd be getting them the best of everything. They are HIS crew and if he decides they deserve a meal, that's what I'm going to give them. Did you get them plates? Will they have something to drink? How about a small veggie tray? I think I'd throw in a couple bags of apples and some grapes as well.

Costco's stuff is good, and in fact better than most grocery store products. I remember my mom started getting their sheet cakes for church there, because they were so much better than Publix and cheaper.

Anyway, Most men I know don't exactly eat fruit and veggie platters. I think the OP did fine.

LOL!! I always wonder why hotdogs and buns come in different numbers, lol.

It's the craziest thing, isn't it. And it always makes me think of Steve Martin in Father of the Bride :lmao:

I sometimes use the extra buns for toast (that's what my grandmother always did), unless Dh gets to them first and he uses them for sandwiches :confused3

I have to agree, husbands are expensive, I think that is one of many reasons we don't have children. He thinks everytime we go in Best Buy he has to have a CD, DVD, or video game.

Now, he can bargain shop at the grocery store, I'll give him that, he learned from watching me.

Husbands are expensive? My questions to you girls are....

How big and full is your closet compared to his?

How many shoes have been laying on the floor of your closet compared to his?

How often have you worn each pair of your shoes?

How many purses have you purchased in the past 10 years compared to wallets he has purchased?

How much jewelry does he own compared to you?

When sitting down for dinner, does your husband ever look at the plate and say, "I'm tired of this design, we need new dishes..."

If you had never met and never married, do you think your husband would have to live in a big fancy expensive house, or just have a place where he could sleep and eat?

My wife has/will cost me hundreds of thousands over the years. Me and my handful of video games can't compare.

Hats off to the husband who wants to buy a bunch of hotdogs for his crew who probably busts their butts for him for probably not much pay. The 2 or 3 times work has a cookout for lunch for us is much appreciated by us here where I'm at.

I love how different the gender roles in other couples are. My wife is financially illiterate, and I do all the money and all the significant purchases, plan the vacations, grocery shopping, etc. Money-wise, she mainly does the clothes shopping for herself and the kids (which she does a great job at and I appreciate), but usually has no idea she just spent $500 until she asks me to return some things for her, and I tell her how much she got back.

She always makes fun of me for how much I care about saving money.
