Hurricane watch 2018

I'm in Raleigh and I can't see the weather here being impacted enough Wed. for RDU to be affected. From what I can see, if it stays on track, the winds should not even be affecting our coast until about Wed. night around 8pm.
Now, Thursday on may be a different matter - just a 'wait & see'!!
On the 'projected path' should not affect FL at all except the coastal waters, and maybe air traffic from Orlando to affected areas.

Okay, I wasn't sure how much of the path would be closer to the coast when the winds were picking up. I don't fly often, so not sure how close to 95 the flight path is. I'm also trying to decide if I want to fly home to possibly go right through a hurricane. I went ahead and bought my supplies today, but yuck coming home to dealing with that.

Good luck to you too! We can’t buy whole new tix, so just waiting now. I am grateful it’s not a high travel time so so far lots of availability.

I have points that I have been hoarding for other trips and this is the only reason we could ever make it happen.

I wondered this myself so I called Southwest a little bit ago to get clarification. The rep confirmed that even though it doesn't state specifically so in the verbiage, your departure or arrival airport must be one of the listed airports in the advisory in order to be able to change flights without paying an additional charge.

I remember this from reading along with hurricane coverage last year, so assumed it was still true. Thanks for the confirmation!

Thank you!!
Ours starts the day in Nashville - then San Francisco - then Chicago - then Manchester, NH ( me) - then MCO

Any thoughts, anyone?

I would be very happy with those earlier flights! As I said up thread ours starts at BWI early on Friday morning and I am nervous about that.

I *think* MCO is far enough removed from the storm. I believe the biggest worry for us is the plane being here (and on time!) to take us to MCO.

Yeppers! :)

I'm having trouble figuring out how to tell where our flights are coming from - like, the entire route. I'm sure it's obvious, but I'm totally missing it.
It took me awhile too. I think i clicked on one of the flights for today that it listed, and then there was a button that said “check incoming flight”

The good news:

Looks like my brothers flight will be confined from Orlando to Chicago, Chicago to lax on Thursday, and then lax to Dulles overnight Thursday into Friday for his flight out Friday morning

We likely will be able to leave around 5 or so Wednesday evening to start our trek down. I made a reservation in fayatteville nc for Wednesday night in case we need a little sleep before continuing on, but may cancel that and just have to travel through the night.

The bad news:
Florence is still on track to go right over my parents house and now says it will be a major hurricane when it hits land still. I am really hoping for a change to that. Worried about their safety, their new home, and if they will be able to get out Monday (flying from raleigh)

I am calling WDW and changing our dates. We are all so sad here. We are hopeful for a Monday, Sept 17 flight at 8:45pm. If we are still out of power on Monday we will have to either cancel it all together or look for another time. This is such a mess. The only thing we can pray for here in Raleigh is this thing shifts a little north or a little south. It will change the forecast for Raleigh and we may not lose power. Oh well...can't change the weather.

In Raleigh, and if Florence stays on track and hits us Thurs/Fri. it would be 'iffy' to leave from RDU. Of course, none of us know what will really happen at this point. The last Hurricane (Fran '96) that impacted Raleigh really bad left the 'City of Oaks' a war zone of downed trees for days/weeks. It was not a pretty sight! :sad1: We'll all hope for the best and try to be prepared!! Stay safe, and hopefully your vacation plans will not be impacted.

Fingers crossed...we're due to leave Long Island-Islip on Thursday 12:50 PM...usually fly over that area. Maybe time to look at switching to alternative flights...

Well, my husband and I packed for our Disney trip yesterday. We're still planning as if we're going Saturday. We live just south of Myrtle Beach in Pawleys Island. Current track would put us on the "good" side of the storm, so we'd get strong winds and some rain but not catastrophic impact. We live a half-mile from the coast. Our flight Saturday is out of the Myrtle Beach airport, so odds are that won't happen. We've reserved a rental car just in case we need to drive one way and then still fly home. Of course, if the track shifts south at all, none of this matters. We'll be praying that our home is still standing and not worrying about vacation!

Mandatory evacuation notices are now posted for The Barrier Islands in NC (Nags Head, Kill Devil, Hatteras.. etc) along with Dare County on the mainland.
Not trying to alarm anyone, just passing along info. Anyone driving along the I95 route down the coast would be advised to stay posted on incoming/updated info and adjust plans accordingly. Airlines will update their pages once they make flight decisions as well.

Florence now being called a disaster of generational proportions - could become the largest natural disaster in US history due to a potential stall over the mid Atlantic states.

:( I'm so sorry to hear that...I know how much you were trying to make it work. I'm really worried for NC...as of now itlooks like this hurricane is forecasted to stall out over NC and VA, but I'm hoping the models change and it comes in and then moves right out. Hopefully you won't get much (if any) damage and will be able to make it down on Monday.

I hate to be all "the sky is falling", but if I lived in that area, I'd be evacuating now. Waiting until Wednesday will just be madness on the highways. I really hope people heed the warnings and take this seriously. Florence looks like she's going to be a beast when she makes landfall. She's up to a Category 3 hurricane now.

That’s how I feel too.
Not sure what models the Canadian weather channel are using to forecast but in their last hit they’ve said Florence could be a 5 at landfall :(

Driving anywhere along I95 from Virginia southward will be impacted.

NOAA at 11 am showing a strong north turn once the storm comes inland heading it over Virginia and on into Maryland Saturday morning.

This is one of the reasons I really didn't like living in FL. It would be "the sky is falling" for weeks on end and then suddenly, "Um... nevermind." Which is better than being right about those kinds of predictions. But you can't just up and leave every time. It costs a ridiculous amount of money. People have jobs. Some people CAN'T leave, etc. It was just too much for my nerves.

I'm about to become a basketcase just trying to figure out if my Mom's flights are going to be able to get here in time for us to leave the following day. I doubt our flights will be affected since we're coming in to MCO from further west, but she has to connect through ATL on Friday, and one of her flights is inbound from LaGuardia.

I know it's all petty considering what could actually take place and the people who live there could suffer severe damage and have their entire lives changed. But that still doesn't keep me from being worried about a trip that has literally been 20 years in the making. We'll be fine - we'll have plans B, C, D, and so on. But the stress! Ugh. I'm not typically a worrier, but this stuff drives me nuts. I just keep praying the high-pressure ridge that's keeping her from shifting back out to sea will change and she'll just skirt the edge of the coast. The east coast does not need a visit from Flo.

Let me tell you all. WOW! We changed our dates to Sept 17-23 this morning. But the track is getting worse. So I have now been on hold and talking with the CM's for an hour. We have decided to change our trip to Sept 27-Oct 3. It is the safest thing for us to do at this point. There are rooms available at the Pop and thanks to this board for giving me the information about the hurricane policy (that most CM's seem to not know) I am getting the run around. I have now been told that there are no discounted rooms. I have explained that we are just asking for our package to be honored. So I sit on hold. If anyone here needs to change their reservation...I wish you luck. This is not fun.
