Hungry Are The Damned! 10/15/07-10/25/07 - COMPLETED W/LOTS OF PICS!!!

Wednesday, October 17th - Welcome to Casey's, the Counter Service of Choice for Discerning Ducks Everywhere

Was it the heat? Were the ducks rabid? Was a cast member performing bizarre experiments on the waterfowl after hours... the unintentional and horrific result being a flock of carnivorous ducks??? :scared1:

The Advance Guard also known as Skirmisher Ducks
148.jpg

Pretending to be frightened by Plankton's "evil eye" the Advance Guard temporarily retreats
150.jpg

All right, I'm ready for my close up!
153.jpg

Feed me! Feed me now!!!
154.jpg

I kid you not, right after I snapped this picture that duck actually nipped me on the leg! Jason claims that all creatures great and small find me sweet and tasty ...

... but since when do ducks nibble on people??? I just always assumed they were herbivorous and while I don't have a problem with ducks eating things other than plants and bugs, I do have a problem with them trying to make a meal out of me. I still have in my mind's eye the image of an Alpha-male duck, bearing an uncanny resemblance to Sauramon, perched on a railing and flapping it's beak while inspiring hordes of lesser ducks to storm the patio at Casey's where they will at long last taste man-flesh.

And that's why ducks are now offically considered jerks. ;)

You know I wonder if these are Union ducks or not. You may need to consult with ZZUB. That may have been the reason for the antagonism. I have heard Union talks are "going south" right now. Something about Artist Point and taking the duck confit off the menu.

Loved the update as usual! Hope you are staying warm. BTW it is going to be 70 here in VA today. :cool2:

To the best of my recollection I seem to remember that ducks eat insects.

Possibly they felt that you guys were 'bugging' them???

Just a thought. I often have them. Not many make sense but they keep me company. :rotfl2:

I think it's an INCREASE in duck on the menu that has them all upset...

Disney ducks eat insects & hotdogs... :scared:

Tink rules, there is an Indian saying that if you want to enjoy your food you should never look over the kitchen wall. The same thing goes for watching them make hot dogs. I know things that you do not want to know nor think about.

Mickey bars are alright though and the ducks to not seem to like them. :dance3:

Honey...

I've worked in enough restaurant kitchens to know better...

& with that thought...

Lets go back to Brenda's Food Trippie!!! :goodvibes :goodvibes

:woohoo: :woohoo:

A friend of mine just passed along a lovely bottle of Perrier Jouet champagne to Jason and me ... Mmmmmmm, bubbly good times ahead in the armpit of the Midwest. :thumbsup2

I hope to have an update rolling tonight if the DIS and everything else comes together and cooperates. :goodvibes

I'd share but I have to drive to see Spamalot tonight - Nat. touring co... Maybe a sip after?

33 pages and I'm all caught up! Great report as always, Brenda. Your duck story was horrifying to me. I absolutely hate birds and 100% agree they are jerks. I was attacked by a seagull at the Polynesian once. I was walking back to the pool area with a tray of hot dogs, fries and our refillable mugs full of soda when a seagull decided to dive bomb the tray, smashing me in the back of the head in the process and making me trip and fall down sending soda and food everywhere. Very traumatic experience. Where was DH? In the pool. When I walked over to him in great distress, he said "Where's our lunch?". :headache:

Sounds like my DH. :sad2: I think guys are related to birds sometimes!

Cut me a little slack, sistahs! I had to workout ... I walked 1.53 miles in 30 minutes! That's the first time I've broken a 20-minute mile on the dreadmill since it showed up last month. :woohoo:

OK ... now I'll start working on that update.

No pressure or anything. ;)

I need more suggestions on restaurants, too, when you're done with the update....:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: And can you iron my shirt?:rotfl:

Wednesday, October 17th - Get on With it Already, Would You???

Before I start, I feel compelled to warn you all that I'm going to spell somethings wrong in this review. I worked out before eating and didn't want my sandwich so now I'm drinking leftover champagne and eating cheese (good cheese that I don't knwo...see? I told you this would happen... the name of, but I'm pretty sure it's French).

And that is indeed fitting and proper, seeing as this update is all about our Frenchie friends at Bistro de Paris. If I only had some chocolate eclairs ... not only would I be in fake-French heaven, but I'd totally negate that workout I did after getting home tonight. Ahhhh, there's nothing like the chocolate-covered taste of futility is there? :lmao:

Before I get to dinner ...

**Collective groan: Good Gawd, woman! It's taken you 6 weeks to get off your 40-mile wide hiney and now that you're finally going to give us a meal we can sink our teeth into you're going to take another meandearing detour that has nothing to do with food???**

Uh, yeah, but it won't be long.

Really, it won't.

See, we had a mini-meet scheduled with some fellow DISers who were taking a Disney cruise October 20th-27th. Jay and I were actually booked on that cruise and for many reasons that will bore you all to the point of gnawing off your fingers we had to cancel. However, I got to know some really wonderful people from exotic places like Canada! and England! and we were able to meet at Martha's Vinyard at 5PM that evening. One nice lady (Auntie Karen!!!) was planning on kidnapping Plankton to allow him to experience the joy of cruising Disney.

But Plankton had a plan...

He always has a plan...

Always.

Is this malevolent mitosis or have I had too much to drink?
164.jpg

Your eyes do not deceive you my fiends, er, friends. Plankton is always looking for ways to take over the World ... it's what he does. His plan was (and is) to create an army of Plankton to do his bidding. It seems to be working, too. At last count I think there are at least 5 Planktons scattered among various DISboard members ... perhaps more. Beware, friends; beware.

So... why did we pick Martha's Vinyard for our meet? Well, Cass and Rob (Timon and her hubby) were meeting us after their anniversary dinner at Beaches and Cream and AFEG and his family were staying at the Swolphin and Jay and I had ADRs in Epcot. In short, it was an easy meeting point for three out of four of us ... sorry Karen!

There's not much to say about Martha's place - it's a bar / lounge but it's nice and comfy and looks out onto Stormalong Bay. And the bartender made some fine drinks, too. Try a Kir Royale the next time you're there - mmm, mmm, good!

If you ever have a chance to meet up with some of your fellow DISers, I highly recommend it. Everyone Jay and I have had the pleasure of meeting has been delightful and genuine. I always get nervous before these things ... I really don't mingle well and I'm not remotely interesting under pressure (not to imply that I'm interesting in calm, secure circumstances because I'm pretty sure I'm not). And Jason is the strong, silent type ... he smiles and nods and doesn't say much (it's safer that way). I guess what I'm trying to say is that I was worried that we'd all meet up and then not have anything to say to each other after chatting on-line for 16 months.

No worries! We hugged and chatted and exchanged cards and gifties and had a few drinks and life was good.

A handsome group of Konked Kruisers...
172.jpg

Thanks to Karen Mouse and family, Timon and family, and AFEG and family for taking time out of your busy schedules to meet with us. It was one of the highlights of our trip. :grouphug:

And now ...

Bistro de Paris: We Can't Spell it, But the Food Sure Eats Good!!

Bistro is an upscale French restaurant located in Epcot - it's upstairs from Chefs de France. They only serve dinner and they only accept reservations 30 days in advance. Check-in is at a podium at the rear entrance to Chef's, which is around the corner and up the small hill towards the pastry shop. You will be asked to wait in the foyer until someone escorts you upstairs. We couldn't have waited more than five minutes before we were taken to our table.

Spiral staircases are cool
176.jpg

177.jpg

I don't like to wait but I guess I will ...
178.jpg

Tables just to the right of us
181.jpg

Isn't the napkin cute?
179.jpg

The man never takes a bad picture ...
180.jpg

So what's for eating? Bistro offers a standard menu and a degustation (tasting) menu. The tasting menu was $120 per person with the wine pairings and $75 per person without them. Those of you who are familiar with our eating and drinking habits already know what we chose for the evening.

That's right!

Bring on a taste of France, baby, and let's wash it down with some wine!!

Here is the tasting menu and choices we were presented with that evening - we both chose one item for each course.

Course I: Saffron and Mussle Soup; Organic Smoked Salmon Dome with Blue Crab Lemon Grass Vinaigrette and Curry Biscuit; Foie Gras Terrine with Apple Calvados Cake, Pruneaux Coulis - $5.00 additional charge.

Course II: Atlantic Red Snapper, Vegetable Spaghetti, and Saffron Sauce; Seared Scallops Skewer, Braised Green Cabbage with Bacon, and Tomato Blinis.

Palate Cleanser: Strawberry and Basilic Granite, Key Lime Sorbet, and Pomegranate Liquor.

Course III: Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Morels, Potatoes, and Shallot Confite; Chicken Breast Stuffed with Porcini Mushrooms and Prosciutto, Macaroni with Black Truffle au Gratin, and Baby Onions.

Course IV (Optional): A French Assortment of Cow and Goat Cheeses with Mixed Salad, Toasted Bread, Pine Nuts, and Chives - $5.00 additonal charge.

The End: A Dessert Sampler!!!!

To start the evening off right we were presented with the chef's Amuse Bouche for the evening.

Make my mouth happy ... now!
185.jpg

This, we were told, is a Frog-Leg Mousse. I wish I remembered more about the name of this dish and the saucey-splashes on our plates, but I don't. That's the problem with Amuse Bouche ... it's not listed on the menu so you must rely on your booze-addled brain to remember the details. I can tell you this - it was very very good. I've never eaten frog before (that I know of) so I wasn't sure what to expect, but this had a light taste and texture and the sauce was just a little spicy. I liked the mousse equally with the sauce and without it.

We were both just glad that it wasn't salmon mousse - that would have been an inauspicious beginning to the meal indeed, especially if it had been served by the Grim Reaper. ;)

There was a girl who wandered around the restaurant with a basket of fresh bread and now and then she'd offer us some. It was so good that I had to be careful not to eat too much of it.

Bread, glorious bread, and a big hunk o'butter
186.jpg

Time for the first course!!

Salmon Domes et al
187.jpg

Jay ordered this but we actually shared everything back and forth throughout the evening in order to try a wider variety of dishes. This was a tasty offering even if it does look weird. I told Jay that his salmon dome looked like something from Attack of the Killer Tomatoes...:lmao: . Even the biscuit, which is positioned on the corners of the plate was decent, and I'm not really a fan of curry. And you can't tell from this picture, but there is sweet, succulent crab hidden beneath that dome...insert drool icon here.

Foie Gras
188.jpg

This was my big $5 gamble of the evening. I loved the foie gras at Victoria and Albert's, so why not try it here? Errrrr...I still must have a ways to go when it comes to edumacating my palate because this foie gras was served cold and I found it absolutely disgusting. The apple cake was yummy but cold foie gras just didn't do it for me - the taste and the texture were just gacky. I don't know how else to explain it. Jay ate a fair amount of this - he said it wasn't bad but he, like me, much preferred the warm foie gras we tried at V&A's.

Wine Paring: Peu de la Moriette, Pichot, Domaine le Vouvray
190.jpg

The wine was chilled and light and crisp and we liked it a lot even if neither one of us really know how to pronounce it!

To be continued ... thanks for reading! :goodvibes

Try a Kir Royale the next time you're there - mmm, mmm, good!

We celebrated New Year's Eve with Kir Royales [and a Lord of the Rings marathon - yes, we are sad little fantasy geeks...] and New Year's Day with Kir Royale hang overs, but boy did it taste good going down!

So I am telling John about this conversation, and he informs me he doesn't actually really like Imo's, he just eats it to please his dad. Ya think ya know a person. I can only eat so much of it, because the cheese is awful rich.

I think that if Jay didn't like Imo's Pizza we would have to seek out counseling. :lmao:

I'll get the details from FIL if I think of it. It's sold under a different name, in a kit or something, but it's their product and it tastes just like it when your done.

Cool - I'm sure the BIL would love to know about it.

We might just do that! :thumbsup2

Excellent! Hope to see you in Stinktown during a less stench-filled time of year (just don't ask me when that is).

Just wanted to stop in and say that I am enjoying your report as usual! My favorite part so far is the mention of the "bog of eternal stench" - The Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies!

Hi Cassie; thanks for reading along. It's nice to see you again - I hope you're well! I wondered if anyone else was going to catch the Labyrinth reference ... I love that movie, too!

I'm glad to see someone else loves Casey's as much as we do. That's one of our few traditions we actually keep up with - we've started getting the corn dog bites lately though, and then we sit in the rose garden by the castle and just chill. There usually aren't ducks there, so it's quite peaceful! Thanks for sharing with us!

I think we're going to steal your idea and try sitting somewhere away from the ducks the next time we eat at Casey's. We have to go there - it's not a visit to the MK without a stop at Casey's.

oybolshoi, find you to be extremely erudite (just knowing what the word means is worth a few points imo) as well as earthy and extremely errant. In a good way that is. :rotfl2:

Well thank you, even though I don't deserve it. I'm one of those jack-of-all-trades people ... I know just enough about a lot of stuff to be dangerous. :lmao:

I am getting used to being sick and tired but am getting a bit tired of being sick. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and will get some really good drugs that can be used against me in the future when I win that gold medal in the Olympics. I will worry about that later though.

I hope your drugs are kicking in and don't worry about the Olympic testing - you have a medical bye. ;)

Feel better soon!

CampbellScott, that totally explains how you cope with all you do and with such a sense of humor and even keel. :rotfl: I am glad it is the diet version though. I cannot help but keep checking in with your report just to make sure that all is well in your world. It is a fabulous place to be. :worship:

I agree 100% - if anyone here is looking for a truly terrific trip report (alliteration at no additional charge) then read Campbell's. The link is in her signature and it is wonderful reading! :thumbsup2

About getting the bird, I have found that those Disney birds are so darned lazy that they will not wander far afield from certain areas where they receive all the food they need. Just move on up the street a tiny bit and you can avoid the worst of them. The birds at Flame Tree do not like to go down by the water because of an alligator. Maybe we could get Casey to put an alligator in their garden? Bet folks would feed it then. :dance3:

SG/Linda (just carried in the paint and gotta go get the ladder)

I am taking notes and filing them away for our next trip ... where not to eat. :rotfl2: Seriously, I used to like eating with the ducks until they decided to chow on my calf.

You know I wonder if these are Union ducks or not. You may need to consult with ZZUB. That may have been the reason for the antagonism. I have heard Union talks are "going south" right now. Something about Artist Point and taking the duck confit off the menu.

Hey there, DD! Good to see you again and thanks for reading! Since your post we were record-breaking warm and then had monster storms to break the warmth and have dropped back into the 30s / 40s. This is the freakiest winter weather I've seen here in quite some time.

Union ducks ... I forgot about that. :lmao:

To the best of my recollection I seem to remember that ducks eat insects.

Possibly they felt that you guys were 'bugging' them???

Just a thought. I often have them. Not many make sense but they keep me company. :rotfl2:

SG/Linda

All I was trying to do was take a picture of the cute ducks. I in no way at any time offered them food or teased them (unlike other patrons we've all seen do just that). Jay must be right ... I'm just irresistable.

I think it's an INCREASE in duck on the menu that has them all upset...

I actually am not fond of duck as a food choice, so they have nothing to fear from me.

Disney ducks eat insects & hotdogs... :scared:

Apparently they also eat people. :rotfl2:

Lovely bubbly. Only slightly jealous, but can't wait for another update.

Hi honeybee - thanks for stopping by to read! It is one of my favorite champagnes but I have to be careful because too much of it gives me a headache. :headache:

I'd share but I have to drive to see Spamalot tonight - Nat. touring co... Maybe a sip after?

Spamalot is so much fun - I hope you enjoy it! And I saved you a glass of bubbly. :goodvibes

Hey there Swankybeth - thanks for taking a read ... a huge read by the sound of it!

Your bird story takes the cake ... now I'm horrified! I would have been in hysterics (and not laughter), but this totally proves my theory: Birds are Jerks. They poop on people and property from mid-air; they carry nasty diseases; They make noise at the worst possible times of day and night; they peck away at homes while inhabitants try to sleep; they attack innocent WDW guests. :scared:

Sorry your DH was clueless on this one ... I guess it is kind of a man-thing in certain instances. They just can't help it.

Sounds like my DH. :sad2: I think guys are related to birds sometimes!

:lmao: :lmao:

We celebrated New Year's Eve with Kir Royales [and a Lord of the Rings marathon - yes, we are sad little fantasy geeks...] and New Year's Day with Kir Royale hang overs, but boy did it taste good going down!

Hi Honeybee - thanks for posting!

I love Kirs ... and you're right - the hangover stinks but it's worth it. :thumbsup2

We did a LoTR marathon, too! All three extended versions back-to-back ... no wonder we needed three pounds of crab legs, six types of cheese, and three bottles of bubbly. :rotfl2:

Came home tonight (Spamalot was GREAT!!!) found your latest report about one of Epcot's finest and needed to go and get something probably (definately) not as good as your report... I went italian with a nice can of Beefaroni... I know - it's going to kill my stomach, but hey...it's comfort food!!!

So... was that an infamous little blue pill box on the table??? Mine is in my purse at all times...

Sounds like my kind of party! And it's gotta be the extended versions. I like to ring in the new year with the feeling that good has conquered evil even if it is Middle Earth.

We ate at Bistro on our October trip, too. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on the tasting menu. I think the traditional French service is what most impressed us. A new set of silverware for each course! Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Applebees anymore...
