Hungry Are The Damned! 10/15/07-10/25/07 - COMPLETED W/LOTS OF PICS!!!

Wednesday, October 17th - Get on With it Already, Would You???

Before I start, I feel compelled to warn you all that I'm going to spell somethings wrong in this review. I worked out before eating and didn't want my sandwich so now I'm drinking leftover champagne and eating cheese (good cheese that I don't knwo...see? I told you this would happen... the name of, but I'm pretty sure it's French.

I knew nothing good could happen when you popped open that bubbly! :rotfl2:

And that is indeed fitting and proper, seeing as this update is all about our Frenchie friends at Bistro de Paris. If I only had some chocolate eclairs ... not only would I be in fake-French heaven, but I'd totally negate that workout I did after getting home tonight. Ahhhh, there's nothing like the chocolate-covered taste of futility is there? :lmao:

But if you're talking about French food, where are the exaggerated pronunciations? :confused3

Before I get to dinner ...

**Collective groan: Good Gawd, woman! It's taken you 6 weeks to get off your 40-mile wide hiney and now that you're finally going to give us a meal we can sink our teeth into you're going to take another meandearing detour that has nothing to do with food???**

Uh, yeah, but it won't be long.

Really, it won't.

That's quite alright. I go off on wild tangents all the time. I think I'll be able to follow along.

See, we had a mini-meet scheduled with some fellow DISers who were taking a Disney cruise October 20th-27th. Jay and I were actually booked on that cruise and for many reasons that will bore you all to the point of gnawing off your fingers we had to cancel. However, I got to know some really wonderful people from exotic places like Canada! and England! and we were able to meet at Martha's Vinyard at 5PM that evening. One nice lady (Auntie Karen!!!) was planning on kidnapping Plankton to allow him to experience the joy of cruising Disney.

Nice! I was going for dinner with The Trio at Kona. If I was hanging solo, I would have crashed the party.

But Plankton had a plan...

He always has a plan...

Always.

Is this malevolent mitosis or have I had too much to drink?
164.jpg

Egad. You've cloned Plankton. :faint:

Your eyes do not deceive you my fiends, er, friends. Plankton is always looking for ways to take over the World ... it's what he does. His plan was (and is) to create an army of Plankton to do his bidding. It seems to be working, too. At last count I think there are at least 5 Planktons scattered among various DISboard members ... perhaps more. Beware, friends; beware.

An army?? :faint: And here I thought Plankton was an original. I'm in shock. Give me a minute.

If you ever have a chance to meet up with some of your fellow DISers, I highly recommend it. Everyone Jay and I have had the pleasure of meeting has been delightful and genuine. I always get nervous before these things ... I really don't mingle well and I'm not remotely interesting under pressure (not to imply that I'm interesting in calm, secure circumstances because I'm pretty sure I'm not). And Jason is the strong, silent type ... he smiles and nods and doesn't say much (it's safer that way). I guess what I'm trying to say is that I was worried that we'd all meet up and then not have anything to say to each other after chatting on-line for 16 months.

I agree. I'm boring in person and found everyone I met to be quite nice. :grouphug: It's a big plus that I don't feel there are any axe murderers in the bunch. :thumbsup2

And now ...

Bistro de Paris: We Can't Spell it, But the Food Sure Eats Good!!

Bistro is an upscale French restaurant located in Epcot - it's upstairs from Chefs de France. They only serve dinner and they only accept reservations 30 days in advance. Check-in is at a podium at the rear entrance to Chef's, which is around the corner and up the small hill towards the pastry shop. You will be asked to wait in the foyer until someone escorts you upstairs. We couldn't have waited more than five minutes before we were taken to our table.

I'm a bit jealous because The Trio bailed out on our ADR there a couple days later. :sad2:

The man never takes a bad picture ...
180.jpg

Ah. The obligatory photogenic hubby photo.

So what's for eating? Bistro offers a standard menu and a degustation (tasting) menu. The tasting menu was $120 per person with the wine pairings and $75 per person without them. Those of you who are familiar with our eating and drinking habits already know what we chose for the evening.

That's right!

Bring on a taste of France, baby, and let's wash it down with some wine!!

I would have been so with you on that wine pairing!

Here is the tasting menu and choices we were presented with that evening - we both chose one item for each course.

Course I: Saffron and Mussle Soup; Organic Smoked Salmon Dome with Blue Crab Lemon Grass Vinaigrette and Curry Biscuit; Foie Gras Terrine with Apple Calvados Cake, Pruneaux Coulis - $5.00 additional charge.

Course II: Atlantic Red Snapper, Vegetable Spaghetti, and Saffron Sauce; Seared Scallops Skewer, Braised Green Cabbage with Bacon, and Tomato Blinis.

Palate Cleanser: Strawberry and Basilic Granite, Key Lime Sorbet, and Pomegranate Liquor.

Course III: Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Morels, Potatoes, and Shallot Confite; Chicken Breast Stuffed with Porcini Mushrooms and Prosciutto, Macaroni with Black Truffle au Gratin, and Baby Onions.

Course IV (Optional): A French Assortment of Cow and Goat Cheeses with Mixed Salad, Toasted Bread, Pine Nuts, and Chives - $5.00 additonal charge.

The End: A Dessert Sampler!!!!

Excuse me while I wipe the drool from my keyboard.

To start the evening off right we were presented with the chef's Amuse Bouche for the evening.

Make my mouth happy ... now!
185.jpg

This, we were told, is a Frog-Leg Mousse. I wish I remembered more about the name of this dish and the saucey-splashes on our plates, but I don't. That's the problem with Amuse Bouche ... it's not listed on the menu so you must rely on your booze-addled brain to remember the details. I can tell you this - it was very very good. I've never eaten frog before (that I know of) so I wasn't sure what to expect, but this had a light taste and texture and the sauce was just a little spicy. I liked the mousse equally with the sauce and without it.

Tastes like chicken. :rolleyes1 Actually, when I think of frog being served, it reminds me of the Far Side cartoon where the frogs in wheelchairs come rolling out of the kitchen. :rotfl2:

We were both just glad that it wasn't salmon mousse - that would have been an inauspicious beginning to the meal indeed, especially if it had been served by the Grim Reaper. ;)

I think you should be more thankful that you weren't seated next to Mr. Creosote!

Foie Gras
188.jpg

This was my big $5 gamble of the evening. I loved the foie gras at Victoria and Albert's, so why not try it here? Errrrr...I still must have a ways to go when it comes to edumacating my palate because this foie gras was served cold and I found it absolutely disgusting. The apple cake was yummy but cold foie gras just didn't do it for me - the taste and the texture were just gacky. I don't know how else to explain it. Jay ate a fair amount of this - he said it wasn't bad but he, like me, much preferred the warm foie gras we tried at V&A's.

I think the ducks are behind this foie gras nightmare. I like it better warm, too.

One nice lady (Auntie Karen!!!) was planning on kidnapping Plankton to allow him to experience the joy of cruising Disney.

Kidnapping? - I'll have you know he had a ball on that cruise - and he came along willingly. There was no fine dining for him that week though except for formal night:goodvibes

But Plankton had a plan...

He always has a plan...

Always.

Is this malevolent mitosis or have I had too much to drink?
164.jpg

I should have known you had a cunning plan:lmao: -you handed him over waaaay too easily - no "take good care of him" lecture or "keep him safe and make sure he doesnt get tossed overboard" etc etc:rotfl2:

****Shameless plug alert** I know Brenda wont mind - To see what Planky got up to on the cruise go over to the cruise trippies - "Planky and the Masons Magical Vacation" - thanks for letting me borrow him Brenda:hug: ****

I am a Prowd Planky owner:goodvibes - hated handing him back so I bought one of my own:rotfl2:

So... why did we pick Martha's Vinyard for our meet? Well, Cass and Rob (Timon and her hubby) were meeting us after their anniversary dinner at Beaches and Cream and AFEG and his family were staying at the Swolphin and Jay and I had ADRs in Epcot. In short, it was an easy meeting point for three out of four of us ... sorry Karen!

No worries Brenda - it only took us 6 hours on Disney transport:lmao:

There's not much to say about Martha's place - it's a bar / lounge but it's nice and comfy and looks out onto Stormalong Bay. And the bartender made some fine drinks, too. Try a Kir Royale the next time you're there - mmm, mmm, good!

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I was worried that we'd all meet up and then not have anything to say to each other after chatting on-line for 16 months.

No worries! We hugged and chatted and exchanged cards and gifties and had a few drinks and life was good.

A handsome group of Konked Kruisers...
172.jpg

It was a great meet - I miss you all:grouphug:

Thanks to Karen Mouse and family, Timon and family, and AFEG and family for taking time out of your busy schedules to meet with us. It was one of the highlights of our trip. :grouphug:

Wine Paring: Peu de la Moriette, Pichot, Domaine le Vouvray
190.jpg

The wine was chilled and light and crisp and we liked it a lot even if neither one of us really know how to pronounce it!

To be continued ... thanks for reading! :goodvibes

Food looks fab except for the fishy yucky stuff. I'd like the wine glasses a little fuller though:rotfl:

And I spy, with my one little eye, Plankton #3 sitting here looking at me. Yes, Brenda...my poor niece never did receive Plankton #3 for her birthday. I took such a liking to him, that he was replaced with something else. Do I get points for good intentions though?

A handsome group of Konked Kruisers...
172.jpg

Handsome indeed! :thumbsup2

As always B, great update.:thumbsup2

Wow, kudos to you for being so adventurous in your "tasting." I don't think I have the "guts" to do it. Sorry, I haven't had my coffee yet.It looks very pretty.

Love the pic of your dismeet. Looks like the photographer caught Hazel talking. In my mind she is telling Chris that he WILL take a pic and he WILL like it!:lmao: Looks like y'all had a great time.:thumbsup2

Came home tonight (Spamalot was GREAT!!!) found your latest report about one of Epcot's finest and needed to go and get something probably (definately) not as good as your report... I went italian with a nice can of Beefaroni... I know - it's going to kill my stomach, but hey...it's comfort food!!!

So... was that an infamous little blue pill box on the table??? Mine is in my purse at all times...

Hi Michelle! Glad to hear you enjoyed Spamalot ... a little queasy over the prospect of Beefaroni, but hey - it's your stomach not mine! ;)

Oh yeah ... if I'm not careful that pillbox shows up in every food picture I take until all the pills are gone. I'm supposed to take my Crohns medication four times a day with food so that little baby goes everywhere with me.

Sounds like my kind of party! And it's gotta be the extended versions. I like to ring in the new year with the feeling that good has conquered evil even if it is Middle Earth.

We ate at Bistro on our October trip, too. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on the tasting menu. I think the traditional French service is what most impressed us. A new set of silverware for each course! Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Applebees anymore...

To jump ahead for a bit - this was the first time we'd eaten in a restaurant that offered a more traditional French menu and I was a little nervous about that because I wasn't sure if I'd really like it or not. While I don't have a basis for comparison, I thought the food was very good, even those things that ended up not being to my taste. If I have a single complaint it's that the service was just a bit too slow between courses; otherwise the experience was wonderful.

I'll be looking forward to reading your Bistro review as well!

I knew nothing good could happen when you popped open that bubbly!

Does anything good ever come of my drinking too much on an empty stomach while trying to write an update? :rotfl2:

But if you're talking about French food, where are the exaggerated pronunciations? :confused3

Oh, believe me I thought about doing that, but since I've done it twice before in other reports I didn't want the joke to become too tired. And ... I don't know how to pronounce half the things we ate or drank, so it's much harder for me to try to spoof the pronounciation. :lmao:

Nice! I was going for dinner with The Trio at Kona. If I was hanging solo, I would have crashed the party.

You would have been more than welcome!

Egad. You've cloned Plankton. :faint:

Scary, isn't it?

I agree. I'm boring in person and found everyone I met to be quite nice. :grouphug: It's a big plus that I don't feel there are any axe murderers in the bunch. :thumbsup2

I didn't think you were boring. And I must echo the overall sense of relief that none of the DISers we've met so far have been psychotic murderous types. ;)

Ah. The obligatory photogenic hubby photo.

He even looked good in the picture I took of him at Le Cellier shortly before he started his week-long reading from the Book of Puke.

I would have been so with you on that wine pairing! Excuse me while I wipe the drool from my keyboard.

I knew you'd be upset with us if we didn't try the wine pairings. ;) And I knew you'd love this menu - you gotta get yourself over there on your next WDW visit.

Tastes like chicken. :rolleyes1 Actually, when I think of frog being served, it reminds me of the Far Side cartoon where the frogs in wheelchairs come rolling out of the kitchen. :rotfl2:

Ha ha!! I love the Far Side (real surprise, right?).

I think you should be more thankful that you weren't seated next to Mr. Creosote!

I think the ducks are behind this foie gras nightmare. I like it better warm, too.

The only thing worse than Mr. Creosote is a toddler at Victoria and Albert's! :lmao:

I wondered what you would have to say about my foie gras reaction - I remembered how much you like it and I was wondering if eating it cold is something of an acquired taste. I'll stick with eating it warm. :thumbsup2

Food looks fab except for the fishy yucky stuff. I'd like the wine glasses a little fuller though:rotfl:

Karen, none of your comments were picked up by my quote-thingy. So thanks again for taking Sheldon on the cruise and being so kind to him and thanks for trekking over to the Beach Club to meet up with us. And thanks for reading!

And I spy, with my one little eye, Plankton #3 sitting here looking at me. Yes, Brenda...my poor niece never did receive Plankton #3 for her birthday. I took such a liking to him, that he was replaced with something else. Do I get points for good intentions though?

As always B, great update.:thumbsup2

I wondered if that Plankton ever made it to his original destination...and then I wondered if you weren't up to the same thing that Jay and I were. Great minds think alike! :goodvibes

Thanks for stopping by to read!

This was one of the more adventurous meals we had on the trip, and I'm glad we tried it. It was still a little scary for me, though. Deep down I still love plain food (and lots of cheese!).

We did have a lot of fun at the meet. I think some of the other group shots must have turned out better than the one I have - Jay and I were trying to squeeze into the frame because the old guy taking the picture said he couldn't see us. So I'm tilted and my face is lopsided and I look like an Amazon woman. Oh well ... Jay still looks handsome and everyone else looks good. :goodvibes

The only thing worse than Mr. Creosote is a toddler at Victoria and Albert's! :lmao:

I had to highlight and bold that text, because I think that's one of the most tag-worthy comments I've seen lately!

I wondered what you would have to say about my foie gras reaction - I remembered how much you like it and I was wondering if eating it cold is something of an acquired taste. I'll stick with eating it warm. :thumbsup2

Well, it looked like your foie gras was more of what I'd consider chopped liver. The fancy French folks might call it paté. :snooty: I happen to like chopped liver/paté, so I probably would have enjoyed it.

I had to highlight and bold that text, because I think that's one of the most tag-worthy comments I've seen lately!

Too funny ... I never thought of that as being tag-worthy. But by god it's the truth! :lmao:

Now if I were a real foodie or if I knew much about cooking anything other than dessert or if I even knew some French, the fact that this was called Foie Gras Terrine would have tipped me off.

But I didn't know what terrine meant (I thought it was a sauce) and I didn't ask. Shame on me. :headache:

From what I now understand, the terrine is usually cold foie gras and that is quite typical of how it's eaten in France. An article I read stated that seared foie gras is far more prevalent in the US.

You hit it - it was much more like pate' than the foie gras I expected based on our dinners at V&A.

But at least we tried it and now we know that our preference is for heated foie gras. So when we make our next fortune ... :rotfl2: ... we'll head back to V&A and eat some more!

OH!! I need a Plankton!
My boys got a spongebob lego - huge spongebob to put together and a tiny tiny plankton- Yep you guessed right everybody wants the tiny plankton!

Off to search.
Oh and on the Bistro- anxiously awaiting more. We ate there once pre-children and really enjoyed it. Felt like we were members of a secret society- the place was full of Disney executives eating. And that Amuse Bouche looks like something I would hate. (too chunky for me) Is amuse bouche french for will you vomit so we can laugh?

We've got a larger LEGO Plankton and as soon as I figure out how to upload pics, we'll have lots of them in our trip report!

I plan all the vacations because it's what gets me through the daily grind of real life working for the Soulless Dominions of Finance. I'm a frustrated wanna-be writer with a goofy sense of humor and a penchant for blowing every vacation budget the hubby has ever given me.

Did you know there are Soulless Dominions of Legality as well? I plan Disney trips because I'm forced to work with them as well.

Love your food report as always Brenda.

Oh Brenda does the Bistro look all fancy smancy. I love spiral staircases too. I can't believe there are TWO Planktons. I can't wait to see more food, oh I mean read more of your food/trip report.

I travel with what I call "my little magic blue pills" Makes life much easier and helps me not to have to try to outdo Cass's tour of the WDW bathrooms that she has on her site!!! ;)

Okay so, I LOVE the word "gacky"...totally adding it to my daily vocabulary. I may also use variations...to gack...is gackified...very versatile word is gacky!

I have to tell you...I would never be able to eat at this place. I'm a little too country...I don't eat frog legs...in anything...and certainly not creamed and/or moussed...I had pet frogs when I was in college...Sprocket...of the "Toad the Wet" fame...and Jasper. It would make me sad to think I was munching away on their cousin's moussed up legs.

Um, I also have this issue about my food touching other food...or sauces spread willy nilly across the plate...or muffins cut oddly and placed at angles not meant for muffins...which are supposed to be enjoyed as a breakfast food...amongst eggs...and bacon and grits...

which just goes to show that I am utterly unsophisticated and totally consumed by my obsessive compulsive disorder.

Good review!!! Y'all looked right perty!!!

:thumbsup2

Everyone always ends up wanting a Plankton ... ;)

The Amuse Bouche wasn't chunky at all, actually. It was super-creamy and smooth and tucked inside a noodle wraping (I think). I kind of felt like I was eating a single slice of manicotti without tomato sauce.

I always say Amuse Bouche = happy mouth. Thanks for reading! :goodvibes

We've got a larger LEGO Plankton and as soon as I figure out how to upload pics, we'll have lots of them in our trip report!

Hi Jodi! I can't wait to read about your anniversary trip ... it may take me a while but I'll be there to read all about it. Here's hoping you guys had some good eats! :goodvibes

Did you know there are Soulless Dominions of Legality as well? I plan Disney trips because I'm forced to work with them as well.

Love your food report as always Brenda.

Thanks for reading! Soulless Dominions of Legality .... shudders visibly ... I think they may be working with our 'problem" credit(s) department. And if planning Disney trips help you to maintain your sanity, more power to you! :thumbsup2

Oh Brenda does the Bistro look all fancy smancy. I love spiral staircases too. I can't believe there are TWO Planktons. I can't wait to see more food, oh I mean read more of your food/trip report.

Bistro is definitely more upscale and very lovely - I really liked all the red in the decor. For some reason that made it feel very ... plush. More food coming soon - thanks for reading!

I travel with what I call "my little magic blue pills" Makes life much easier and helps me not to have to try to outdo Cass's tour of the WDW bathrooms that she has on her site!!! ;)

Do you have IBD as well? Do you take 8 horse pills per day or are you taking something else? You can tell me to mind my own business if you like, I'm just being a nosy nellie. Here's hoping you have long-term periods of feel-good-itis.

Okay so, I LOVE the word "gacky"...totally adding it to my daily vocabulary. I may also use variations...to gack...is gackified...very versatile word is gacky!

Thank you! I like to think that I made that word up since I've never heard anyone else use it but me. The "Brenda" definition is utilized primarily for those foods or drinks that coat the inside of the mouth and leave a disgusting paste / residue on the tongue, ruining everything else that comes after unless you rinse your mouth out with copious amounts of alcohol (unless you're at home and you can just bursh your teeth).

Too much information? :rotfl2:

It took me a long time to be able to look at a menu for a restaurant like this and think, "hey, that sounds pretty good!" And I'm pretty sure if the waiter had brought out a plate of actual frog legs I might have passed on them - I'd be thinking of Kermit. :rotfl:

I'm with you to an extent with sauces and food touching each other. I'm not a sauce or dressing person, and I loathe gravy. I scrape ketchup off cheeseburgers for crying out loud ... :lmao: so I really do understand.

In this case I didn't mind too much because the sauce was off to the side so I could dip the fork tines in it to get a little taste to see whether or not I could withstand full sauce immersion.

Is this hamburger and fries and xlarge sundae all for 1 counter service.

Hello there! We weren't on the dining plan on this trip, but I can tell you that last year (Oct. 2006) Beaches and Cream was 1 table service credit and that included anything on the menu except the Kitchen Sink dessert. So at that time 1 TS paid for a drink, burgers & fries, and a sundae.

It's not really a very good use of a TS credit, in my opinoin. Beaches and Cream is still pretty affordable by Disney standards so I think it's best to pay out of pocket there and use your TS credits someplace where you will get a little more bang for your buck.

Thanks for reading!

I'm not so sure what I've got... they've thought of everything from IBS to Celiac... Nothing seems to stick... Mostly I take lots of meds because I have a permanent nerve injury that runs from my fingertips to my spine so I think I killed my stomach with too much ibuprofen... & other nicer drugs... :upsidedow

I take Dycyclomine Hydrocloride which is (sorry to everyone else reading...) an antispasmotic. I love those pills - especially since I am a foodie!!! I even take one before I eat and it helps or else I'm in the ladies with whatever I can grab really fast to read... :rotfl: (sort of rotfl...) Yesterday it was the want ads up in Lake George... No... I do NOT want a summer job next year... (my brother SWEARS he knows all the answers to final Jeopardy from reading the encyclopedia in the bathroom...)

Did you ever notice it usually happens to people who LOVE food??? :sad2:

Wednesday, October 17th - Bistro de Paris, Part Deux

Where were we before I got knocked flat by a 2-day migraine and a unwelcome visit from the Crohn Goblin?

Ahhh, that's right ... the mysteries of French food. At least they were mysteries to me since I don't really know the language; and while Jay took French in high school and definitely has a gift for languages, he is no longer fluent so I guess it was a mystery for him, too.

Let's get back to it, then, shall we?

I mentioned this in a response to another poster, but I think it bears repeating here. The service at Bistro was quite good, but I felt it was rather slow between courses - I'd say it was about 20 minutes between the table being cleared for one course and our being presented with the next. I understand that the object is not to be rushed through dinner, but it just felt a little too long. Our ADR was for 7:30PM and by the time we left the restaurant it was close to 10:30PM - we did enjoy having the World Showcase to ourselves, however; talk about a lovely and romantic walk back to the Beach Club through the International Gateway.

Time for our second course!!

Atlantic Red Snapper with Vegetable Spaghetti & Saffron Sauce

Seared Scallop Skewer, Braised Green Cabbage w/Bacon, and Tomato Blinis
192.jpg

We forgot to take a picture of the wine for this course, but it was a Pinot Blanc, Willm 2004. This was my favorite wine of the evening - clean and very refreshing ... loved it with the scallops, especially!

Jay ordered the snapper while I chose the scallops. Both of these choices were excellent, but I thought the scallops were just a little bit better. They were light and smooth and flavorful - not a bit chewy or fishy tasting. I ignored the cabbage - I don't care who prepares it, that's one vegetable I just don't like. But the tomato blini, just peeking out from underneath the cabbage near the bottom of the plate, was divine and actually tasted good by itself, with the scallops, and with some of that sauce ... or all three. Yummy! Blini, by the way, are small buckwheat pancakes that originated in Russia. They're so cute and tasty! And just above the scallops you can see the bacon - a nice thick cut cooked to perfection. Bacon and scallops ... oh-so-good!!!

Jay's snapper dish looks a little bizarre, doesn't it? Apart from the arti-fartiness of the presentation, I was struck by the size of the fish, which I thought was quite generous for a tasting menu portion. That's a good hunk o'snapper sitting on his plate and it tasted quite good. Some of the noodles were actually crunchy - maybe they were baked? I didn't care for that so much, nor did I like the saffron sauce, which tasted bitter to me.

And of course, being the freak I am, I couldn't help singing a lyric from Mellow Yellow just to annoy Jay while he was trying to eat.

I'm just mad about Saffron;
Saffron's mad about me.
I'm just mad about Saffron;
She's just mad about me

They call me mellow yellow
Quite rightly
They call me mellow yellow
Quite rightly
They call me mellow yellow

I blame Grimace for this unfortunate tendency of mine to always have song lyrics bopping about in my brain - I grew up listening to the local Oldies station and while I can no longer seem to remember what I did three hours ago, I have no problem recalling lyrics from songs I first heard more than 30 years ago. :rotfl2:

And now for the intermezzo to cleanse our palates, just in case they were gacky.

Strawberry & Basilic Granite, Key Lime Sorbet, and Pomegranate Liqueur
193.jpg

This was good, but it was too much if you ask me, which probably doesn't make much sense at all. I'm used to a single, light sorbet as a palate cleanser - the mouth should feel clean and refreshed during and after consumption and it shouldn't leave much, if any, of a taste behind. In this case, strawberry was fighting with key lime and then for good measure we were supposed to pour the Pomegranate liqueur over them both. I don't know about you, but that combination is not going to cleanse my palate ... it's just going to make my tastebuds think they're having an acid flashback.

I don't want anyone to misunderstand - it's not that this tasted bad because it was actually quite good. But it was heavy and there were a lot of warring flavors and I really felt like this should have been a dessert offering rather than a palate cleanser. I only ate about half of mine because it was starting to fill me up and I was worried that I wouldn't have room for the rest of the meal. Jay, on the other hand, had no such worry and finished every drop of his and the remainder of mine.

After what seemed like a very long wait, our main courses arrived at the table.

Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Morels, Potatoes, and Shallot Confite

Chicken Breast Stuffed w/Porcini Mushrooms & Prosciutto, Macaroni w/Black Truffle Au Gratin and Baby Onions

The tenderloin was the better choice in this instance and I ended up eating more of that than the chicken. I'm not crazy about mushrooms ... alright, I hate mushrooms, so both dishes were actually a little iffy in my book. My issue with the tenderloin was all the sauce and the fact that it was a bit more rare than either of us would normally order, but it was still very tasty. The chicken was a tad dry but it tasted very good wrapped in the prosciutto ... pork, is there anything it can't do? The macaroni was not to my liking at all, which is strange because I normally love it, but I think I was just picking up too much mushroom and onion - a doubly bad, dare I say evil, combination.

Jay really liked both dishes and ended up eating most of them and he really liked the wine, too. He's a red wine guy, so if it's deep, dark, and red, he's sold. I have issues with red wines - they give me baaaaaad headaches - so this was the only wine I didn't finish during dinner.

The next course was an optional one, and it carried a $5 surcharge. How could I pass up the cheese plate? How could Jay pass up the cheese plate? The answer is that we didn't ... neither one of us passed it up because for some idiotic reason known only to our pleasantly buzzed brains we each ordered a cheese plate. :rotfl2:

French Assortment of Cow and Goat Cheeses w/Mixed Salad, Toasted Bread, Pine Nuts, and Chives
197.jpg

Yes, we really ordered two of these...
198.jpg

I have no idea what these cheeses actually are, but I thought all three of them were outstanding. I was particularly pleased to note that there were no stinky bleu cheeses in our assortment. I have to keep my leafy green intake to a minimum, so I didn't each much of the "salad" and as far as the nuts are concerned ... just say no if you have any kind of intestinal disorder, trust me. Does anyone else here think that the "toasted bread" looks an awful lot like a Ritz cracker? Perhaps something got lost in translation between bread and cracker ... :confused3

Before our dessert course was presented, we were each given a glass of semi-bubbly. And then our waiter brought out a birthday dessert for Jay and I to share!

Marquis de Perlade, Blanc de Blanc

Look - an onamatapoetic device right there on the plate!
200.jpg

That's right ... Happy Birthday Benda ... :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao:

It's a good thing there were only a few other people in the restaurant by the time this showed up because we sat at the table and giggled like little kids for the longest time. The harder we tried not to laugh the more we ended up laughing ... we even gave it a go with the Name Game: Benda, Benda, Bo-Benda, Banana-Fana-Fo-Fenda, Fe-Fi-Fo-Menda, Benda! :rotfl2:

What? Oh, how did it taste? Umm... it was actually pretty good - something along the lines of a chocolate napoleon with sugar-glazed fruit on top. We tried not to eat all of it since we had the "real" dessert still to come, but when someone slaps a free French-made dessert on our table it's nearly impossible for us to stop eating.

Second Dessert ... the one we paid for, was actually a dessert assortment: Strawberry Millefeuille, Mint Ice Cream, Vanilla Creme Brulee, Pineapple & Coconut Summer Tart, and Warm Chocolate Cake with 70% Dark Chocolate.

It's Blissssssssss....
201.jpg

Your eyes do not deceive you - there are five desserts on that plate for Jay and I to share. And they were all incredible. I'm half tempted to tell you fine readers to make an ADR at Bistro and order the tasting menu just so that you can experience the joy of sharing five desserts with the one you love.

The French and dessert - does it get any better?

I think not.

Perhaps the most interesting item on the plate was the mint ice cream. This is not your Amercanized mint-chip ice cream that tastes more like spearmint with chocolate. Oh no, this tasted like a frozen mint leaf that the chef plucked out of his garden. Have you ever taken a fresh mint leaf and rubbed it between your fingers? That scent is actually how this ice cream tasted ... a little strong at first but incredibly good.

The other desserts were equally as tasty. The chocolate cake had a molten dark chocolate center - sinful; the creme brulee was sweet and creamy with just a hint of vanilla - drool-worthy; the strawberry thingee with the heavy cream around the outer edges and the crispy cookie was a refreshing mix of sweet and tart - decadent; and the pineapple / coconut tart was a creamy surprise that I still won't ever eat again - interesting but the least appetizing in my book. And that streak of chocolate down the side of the plate? Finger licking good!

So ended our meal at Bistro and let me tell you, even though there were items that I wasn't personally crazy about I thought the quality of the food was excellent. We weren't sure what to expect since there are so few reviews of Bistro here at the DIS, but we really felt like this was a terrific meal and a lovely experience overall, despite some slowness in service. We would definitely go back to Bistro again!

We waddled back to the room slowly, enjoying having the World Showcase to ourselves and stopping to take some pictures that just didn't turn out well and ended up being deleted. And then when we ended up back at the villa, look at what was waiting for us:

Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate dipped Strawberries with a Dark Chocolate Wave. I think we were supposed to eat these on our balcony with a bottle of Fairy Tale Cuvee, but that was before we knew that the French were trying to kill us with culinary kindness. Alas, these had to wait for another day, but it was worth it. These defy description, really; just order some for yourself if you happen to stay at Deluxe Resort that offers them and you'll understand what I mean.

Thus ends, finally, the day. Next up on the agenda will be breakfast at the Yacht Club Galley, Afternoon Tea at the Gardenview Lounge, and a spontaneous dinner of sorts at Spoodles.

Thanks as always for reading! :grouphug:

:sad2:

That totally stinks. I have issues with Ibuprofen as well and end up trying to walk a fine line between not making my stomach and intestines any more upset than they already are and not being in constant pain from other issues on a daily basis.

I'm pretty lucky, all things considered. I take Pentasa daily and that seems to keep the Crohns under control for the most part as long as I don't eat the stuff that seems to really set it off. I've also taken the anti-spaz before, but have been able to forgo that for some time now.

It must be very frustrating not to be able to name the problem - I hope you have more days when you feel well rather than cruddy and wish you all the best with your health.

Happy Brenda Update Dance!

:rockband: <---Playing the Britney 'Gimme More' song

:dancer: <-----Kind of looks like Britney.

I'm glad your feeling better Brenda! Migraines suck, don't they?:headache: And I'm sure your little goblin isn't any fun either.

The food at the Bistro looks divine! And that dessert plate, omg! Do you know if it is possible to do a dessert only meal there? I'm impressed that you only used your fingers on the chocolate streak down the side, I would have been hard pressed to not lick the plate!:)
