I ordered a notebook (laptop) from HP. Looking for others who have heard or had experience with HP.
They seemed to have a great deal and for the upgrades, it was cheaper than dell. We got 512mg/60m/cd dvd combo/15.5 screen to name a few of the features. Our price after that and extended 2 yr service plan (since it will be used for work as well) was just under $800.00. Plus, a free printer.

Any advise or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks you all. :surfweb:

HP makes good laptops. Assuming other things are similar (wireless connectivity, processor type and speed, etc), that looks like a very very good deal.

Thanks, I was hoping I made a good decision. My husband usually is the financial decision maker--however, I decided to take it upon myself to step out and see what I could find. I got it so I could save my pictures to disc and scrapebook with it. I was told these features would do. Here are the features in a nutshell for model dv5000z:

HP Pavilion dv5000z CTO NB
- Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
- AMD Sempron(TM) 3000+ (1.8GHz/128KB L2 Cache)
- FREE Upgrade to 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen!!
- 128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)
- 512MB DDR SDRAM (2x256MB)
- 60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
- DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
- 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)
- No TV Tuner w/remote control
- 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
- Microsoft(R) Works/Money/word

Hi. I truly hate to be Ms. Doom-and-Gloom, but we've not had a good experience with our HP Laptop. I've had it for about 2 years and the motherboard blew out on us a few months ago and is in the process of being repaired...out of our pocket. We had numerous small problems with it before that as well. Some while it still under warranty, some not. My DH and I have already said that we will not be purchasing another HP...we're looking at a Dell for next time.

Of course, I know that for EVERY brand out there, there are a few duds. Obviously this doesn't guarantee you will have any problems - most likely you will be perfectly fine! I hate to even post this because I hate it when people bash something I just bought, but I just wanted to give you a small word of warning...

Again, sorry to give a negative report. Good luck, feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Hay, I thank you for being honest. I have a 30 day trail period, if I don't like it--I may decide to send it back and go from there. But I sure appreciate you being honest. It is the only way I can make a good decision, at least I hope. Again, thank you.

No problem. Again, for every disappointed customer out there (us), I'm sure there are many more satisfied customers! We also have an HP Printer and it has been just fine. Who knows, maybe we just got a DUD!

I hope you have better luck than we did...us neighbors have to look out for each other, right??!! :thumbsup2

hay, I did not realize you were from KY--we are in Georgetown about 45 minutes from Louisville. We are originally from Northeast Ohio and moved here due to job transfer my husband took two years ago. Believe me, we love it here and have no intentions on moving back. There is something in the expression "nothing like southern hospitality." Thanks again for sharing.

I've read plenty of good things about the dv5000z models, and though there is always the possibility of getting a DUD, I think you're just as well off with that one as with any other major brand. My former employer had a contract with Dell, and we used to get something like 100 new laptops every year (as well as about 700 desktops every year). Dell makes very good laptops and desktops, yet there were always bad ones in there (maybe 1-2 per 100).

So I wouldn't worry about your choice, especially with the 2 year service you paid for. The vast majority of the time, if something is defective, it'll happen early enough that you can get it replaced/repaired for free. After a couple of years though, things just tend to wear out, and then it's more of a coin toss as to whether you'll if/when you'll need to fix something.

P.S. For about $800, it looks like you got a good deal. :)

I am in the same boat.

I ultimately went with a HP and it should be delivered soon. The one I picked is highly rated except for battery life.

The dell that was rated higher (XPS 140) was tempting, but my dell experience when something goes wrong is beyond miserable. Far beyond miserable.

My HP experience with customer support has been far better (albeit not great)

My dad has been very happy with every HP and Compaq laptop he's ever owned. I have an HP laptop now and am very very happy with it. And you can't go wrong with HP printers

I've always had HPs and I have never had a problem with them. My next laptop will be an HP.

Thank you all for the input. By the sounds of everyone, I made a good deal. Again, Thank you and may you all have good experiences in this life. I'll keep you all posted on the laptop when it comes. Hay, for those of you getting an HP, let me know how you like it. God bless from Kentucky

I have had 2 HP laptops. My experience with both: They run hot, especially when plugged in. Don't leave it on a couch, bed, etc. when plugged in.

Be very, very careful where the power cord plugs into the back of the laptop. I have had problems with the whole area becoming loose and not charging anymore. Put in and take out power cords gently, make sure nothing is tugging or pulling on the cord to make the connection wiggle.

Otherwise, I have loved HP laptops. Enjoy!

I love my HP laptop as well, but I have just experienced this problem with the power cord connection. I thought it was a problem with the cord, and replaced it and then realized that it was the fact that the plug area was loose, and one day it just "fell" into the laptop. Sounds like this was not an isloted problem. I have to take it in for repair. I have a HP desktop computer, and a laptop for business that I have been able to get buy with, but I love my HP and I love being wireless!

I use my laptop HARD (I have had it now for two years)- it is on many hours a day, is moved from area to area, etc, and except for the power outlet problem, it has been a real GEM! My sister use a HP laptop as well (she always has to out due me - so she is on her second - she had to upgrade so hers was newer than mine!) and she loves them too!
