My husband has a tentative meeting in Vancouver in June, 2017 and I would like to book an Alaskan Cruise for after the meeting. I am anxiously awaiting opening day pricing and I wanted to know that after I booked, if I needed to move the cruise to a week later, what is the best way to do this? Is buying Travelguard insurance through Costco a good way to go to cancel and rebook at the higher price or can I just call Disney and move the cruise to the following week without totally cancelling and rebooking at the a different rate? What would you do? We did not do a placeholder cruise (I know-dumb right!) But we did not think that we were going to be going on a cruise again for awhile.

You can just call Disney and they will move your cruise date for you. As long as it is not past the final payment date.

As PP mentions, call DCL and they'll move it -- or if you used a TA the TA will have to make that contact. No need for travel insurance to be involved unless you are past the PIF date. Rates do not carry from one cruise date to another so the new cruise will be priced at the prevailing rate (rate the day you make the date change), which may or may not be higher/lower/similar. Your deposit should carry over, but if the new fare is higher you will owe the difference in required deposit.

Enjoy your cruise!

How long is it going to be until you know if you need to move to the following week or not? If it isn't going to be too long and you are willing to risk prices going up a bit then just book the cruise date you think you most likely will be traveling and change the date through DCL/TA as the pp's mentioned (no cancelling required). But if it might be several months and prices may jump before you are able to determine which date you need, can you deposit on both dates and cancel one before the penalty kicks in? (Penalties on regular cabins don't start until a couple months before the sail date; this won't work if you are planning on sailing concierge though.)

Genius idea! Thanks for the advice! I did not realize that I could just move a date with not penalty before PIF! Love the idea of two cruise dates! Thanks all!

OP, thanks for asking, I had the same question! Now must wait for itineraries...
