How scary is Space Mountain?

Everyone else has hit on the darkness and jerkyness and I completely agree with them. I get a sore neck after riding unless I spend the whole time doing the Herman Munster.

The other thing about it that scares me is that I have small children on it and I can't see/feel them. I rode it with a 4 year old that loved it but I spent the whole time freaking out about all the jerking and the small lap bar that was on my child.

I can't do coasters like EE -- just do NOT like that BIG drop (Really not crazy about Splash Mountain for the same reason, although I typically get talked into it once each trip), but I have always liked Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is more twisty turns with smaller dips. My daughters finally talked me into Space Mountain a few years ago because they promised there were no big drops. Yes, it's in the dark & yes, you don't know what's coming next, but the track reminded me a lot of BTMR -- lots of twisty turns with smaller dips -- and I ended up really liking it. And like a few people have said, once you've ridden it a couple times, you can anticipate what's coming next (sort of). The worst part of the ride is definitely the jerkiness, but it's not an over-the-top, big-drop kind of coaster.
