How scary is Space Mountain?

I know the seating is different in Disneyland (you sit 2/row) but my 6 year old niece just rode Space Mountain in October. It wasn't her favourite ride but she didn't think it was too bad overall. For me the worst part is that it's a bit rough and jerks you around. It's dark but I've never found it so dark that I couldn't see parts of the track.

I don't like Space Mountain. Too dark and too jerky. You can really hurt your neck on that ride.

I am pretty scared of fast rides, Jungle Cruise and Peter Pan's Flight are enough action for me :).

Over the last few years I have gotten better, in January I did Expedition Everest and did enjoy it. Space Mountain is one I'd like to try but would like to hear some thoughts on it. What scares me is not being able to see what's coming and drops...

I'm returning in December, worth experiencing or am I better off just enjoying The PeopleMover?

Thanks!
It looks like I may be in the minority here but I find Space Mt a rougher ride than EE.
The darkness makes it much harder IMO.
I guess if I am on a fast ride that I like to lean this way or that way based on what I see ahead of me. Can't do that when you have no idea what's next. I know Space Mt is not that fast but it is just rougher for me as I don;t know what's ahead.

I was scared to death of space mountain lol...but my 8 yr old son is getting into the thrill ride years and begged to go on it after a Disney CM told him it was the greatest ride at the park lol. My husband and I rock paper Scissored it to see who got to take him on it lol...I lost 3 times...anyways I went to take him on it and the CMs were laughing at me because I asked every CM I saw how bad the ride actually was, lol. Anyways I went on the ride and it wasn't that bad. I sat in the middle of the car and my son sat front row. My kid became obsessed with space mountain and had to ride it 2 more times during our vacation lol. I will say this, the next time I rode it with him I was in the back and the back is genuinely bumpier than the middle and u get tossed around a lot on the back. Anyways now my son wants to ride Everest on our next trip Don't know if I will make it through that one lol

Not scary unless you've seen it with the lights on while riding People Mover. Then I got kinda paranoid about it. However, the older I get, the less and less I like it, and I LOVE coasters. It's just getting too rough.

SM is the only ride at WDW where I truly felt I was going to come out from under the restraint. SM is old and rickety, dark and very rough. I've ridden it a few times but won't anymore.

If you enjoyed EE, you'll enjoy SM. The only people I know who have issues with SM are really tall people who feel that they're going to be decapitated while riding, by ride supports that are actually 10 feet over their head.

Have you ever been to an amusement park and ridden the "wild mouse"?

Space Mountain is wild mouse in a barn ;-)

Ahaha, I'm 6'5", I might skip it :)

For me, Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom is WDW's very own Matterhorn. It's super jerky to the point of making my neck sore (and I'm pretty resistant to that stuff), annoying sudden turns and single seats. Even worse, it's pretty much unthemed other than the first climb, so you see nothing other than faint views of some track going round and round and round. Even the photos you get after show how people are just unimpressed.

My opinion is - gut it out. Redo it. If you can't copy the Disneyland Paris Space Mountain, at least do it like the one in Disneyland California, which is way better. MK's Space Mountain should go, it's a fairly crappy rollercoaster (especially for the long wait).

The problem I have with SM is that you never know what to expect due to the darkness. I always leave the ride with a pain in the neck from tensing up.

I hate drops and roller coasters. I have done SM though. Never have done EE and won't. I don't do SM anymore because I have a bad neck. If it wasn't in the dark then I would have no problem with it because then I could lean into the turns. But I definitely do not find it scary.

As my husband says, 'it's very herky jerky and really shakes you up'

So, here's the gist of it...

I have always been terrified of fast/scary/intense rides. I haven't done Everest or Rock 'N' Roller Coaster yet (I did TOT for the 4 park challenge. I will never EVER do it again).

I did Space Mountain yesterday for the first time, and it isn't nearly as bad as I though it was. The actual roller coaster part isn't bad (Big Thunder is much worse), but the scary part is not being able to see. But here's a TGM secret for you! Close your eyes, or look down when they flash the blue and white lights in the beginning! They make the black space more black, so that you can't see the track.

But you have two more options.

1. Ride late at night, when the lights are on.

2. Wear one of those head-lamps. I'll let you borrow mine! You might ruin it for everyone else, but at least you'll enjoy it!

I found EE much scarier, probably because I have some fear of heights. On Space Mountain, you can't see how far you're falling, so it's less frightening to me.

It's like being on a roller coaster in outer space. You feel the drops and turns, but all you see around you are twinkling stars. For me, that neutralizes any fear.

It's not an extreme ride. If you can handle EE, you should be able to give SM a try and you'll be fine.

I was concerned about riding space mountain too until I rode it about a month ago. I loved it! I laughed and screamed my head off during the ride and left with a big smile on my face each time I rode it. The part that makes it scary is that it is in the dark. I could see parts of the track ahead of me, at times, and that helped me anticipate which way we would be doing. I thought it was as jerky as Big thunder is when you go over the small hills.

Space Mountain isn't scary, but it does beat the hell out of you. I rode it 3 years ago and I was 36 at the time, and all I remember is that it made me feel old when I got off because I was so sore/beat up from being jerked around. I didn't have this problem any of the other coasters at WDW - just SM. I remember riding it at DL when I was in my early 20's, and I loved it.
