How often do you take your dog outside to potty?

We got a pug a few months ago. My first inside dog ever. I walked her every two hours when we first got her. Now I usually walk her about every 3-4 hours. She rarely ever has an accident-about 2 in the last month. Am I walking her enough or too often? She never goes to the door or indicates she wants to go out. May be a dumb question, but I don't know the answer. Thanks.

I have a Shih Tzu, they don't really need any extra exercise then what they already get. So, he plays each time we go out to potty (every hour or so) and then plays inside.

I tried to take him on one walk, and he got tired halfway around the block and I ended up carrying his furry butt the rest of the way home! LOL!

I am going to be more intentional on walking some for the sake of walking on a leash, he pulls alot, but that's it.

Each breed is diff - do some searches on pugs and find out how much exercise they need. =)

I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear. I meant to go potty. Thanks for the reply.

When we were still training, it was every hour or more:) Now that he's got that under control, he goes out every 4 hours or so. It's easier to predict early in the day, in the evening, we leave the back door open so he can go at will

Pugs are known to be one of the toughest breeds to train. You need to be patient. When your puggie goes outside where you want her to, have a really great treat waiting for her, pugs are extremely food motivated

I used to have a chocolate lab and an irish setter. They would go out pretty much whenever they wanted to after my setter discovered that he could open the door himself!! We had lever handles and he was smart enough to figure out how to use it. The door was self closing so it would close behind him when he went out. And...I'm serious about this! people think I'm crazy but it's true.

Normally, though I would let them out every few hours. I'd say about 3-4 depending on what they eat/drink during the day.

He goes out about 3 times a day or whenever he scratches at the door.
Yep, same for us. BUT, that was after he was trained. About 5-6mo's of age.

I don't know much about small dogs, but I will assume its the same principles (did I spell that correctly?) Anyway...Crate training and food rewards are the best way to train your dog.

Small dog and young, as frequently as your schedule allows. Gradually increase the amount of time as the pup ages.

Good luck.

Petey is a 7# toy poodle. While he was training he went out at least once every hour. Now that he's reliable, he goes about every 4 hours or whenever he asks, whichever comes first. You can't walk your dog too much but if you want to teach him to let you know you'll have to work on that. Teach him a particular action that you will recognize as his signal. I taught Petey to come to me, sit and speak to tell me he has to go. If you want to know exactly how to do that PM me. A lot of people teach their dog to ring a bell. Start gradually reducing the number of times you take him out now that he's fairly reliable.

My labbie has a big bladder - three times per day is good for him when it is cold or rainy. I babysit a pug, and he needs to go out a lot. We found some petrified poop in the corner of our living room when putting up the tree that came from him. We were thinking of rolling it in glitter and hanging it up!!

My dog goes out about 3 times/day when the weather is bad. (His choice--not mine.) I guess I let him out about 5 times on nicer days. He's a lab, though, so he's a lot bigger. The thing that helped us was training the dog to "ask" to go out. We hung a bell on the door and rang it as we went out. Now he rings the bell to go out.
