How many DVC folks "clean the jacuzzi tub" before using?

The belt example is interesting. Hadn't thought of that - but those are MY germs!!

Seriously, I wouldn't be likely to clean the hot tub, but I would hope that housekeeping does run a cleaning cycle or something. I guess the oatmeal story shows that doesn't happen. Ick.

As for germs, I generallys tick with soap and water for the hands and don't worry about other things. I go to the movies with high back theater seats. How many heads with who knows what leaned back before I did? What about the arm rests? Same for the plane down and back?

I think building up natural immunity (absent an immune disorder) is a good thing and don't worry about it unless I can notice a problem. Thanks to Vit C & Zinc - cold-free for 26 months (with several flights and Disney pool/jacuzzis in the meantime)!!

Dirk

We do Vit C and zinc here too, and hardly have any colds. We also believe in building immunity naturally.

Now that I've said that, I'm figuring out how to clean the jacuzzi at DVC!! ;)

The people before us must have taken an oatmeal bath because it was nasty.
I even used dishwasher soap and just kept getting more and more oatmeal out of the jets. I created a huge job for myself because I didn't want to leave it that way or not to mention, let the kids get in the tub. I think I used a whole roll of paper towels and literally had to scoop out the oatmeal. YUK!
Could have been the leftover from a couple of bath bombs from Basin... :-)

I didn't clean the jacuzzi before I filled it.......I got busy while the jets were running, and wound up only sitting in it for a few minutes because I noticed some brown coloring around some of the bubbles......?????

When I drained it there the brown foamy stuff left a ring around the tub. I have NO IDEA what it was, and I really hope it wasn't from someone that had an upset stomach! I'm thinking it was gunk from the tubes....?????? Please tell me that's what it was!

Not to gross anyone out but my first DVC jacuzzi stay I cleaned the tub but didn't think about the jets and pipes. (I didn't know anything about the mechanics of a jacuzzi!) On that trip, I ended up with an uncomfortable infection usually associated with females. It was my first one since about 20 years. I also ended up with a UTI about a week after we got home and my doctor later told me that both things were from the bacteria in the jacuzzi. Whether the doctor was right or not, I have since cleaned out the jets before anyone gets into that tub! Sorry if this was TMI but I wish I had known this before I left for vacation!

I don't EVER use a jacuzzi away from home...anywhere !!!!
Doesn't matter how pretty they are.....YUCK !!

Mine @ home (not Jacuzzi brand) has a sanitization system, after draining the tub, built into it (automatically comes on) with steam & hot water that "cleans" the pipes out.....dries them out too...so that NO water remains in the pipes at all...growing bacteria for the next bather....EEK!!:scared1:

Truthfully, I usually run an empty tub just to see what comes out of the jets. If it looks like it needs it after that, then I will clean with the dishwasher soap and another rinse tub, but the first rinse is often enough, and I know it gets the dirty water out of the pipes from the last person to use it.

Another one that always uses a paper towel to turn off the faucet & open the door in a public restroom. ;)

We always run the tub with a LOT of bleach & I don't think I've ever NOT seen the black stuff come pouring out of the jets. My DS is the only one that uses it since he loves the darn thing, but I always make sure I do a bleach run first.

Judging by the smell of chlorine in the pools & hot tubs I would say Disney does not skimp on their cleaning chemicals. However, there is nothing that grosses me out more than those cute little duckies that swim in the pools. Have you seen what they leave on the bottom? :scared:

Hmmm makes you really wonder then....about those Disney Pools too..if you are smelling that much chlorine. Read this:

Found this on wikipedia:

"Chlorine smell" is misunderstood, as chlorine is a colorless(slightly yellowish), odorless gas. What can occur is that insufficient chlorine is called upon to disinfect a heavily contaminated pool. In the incomplete reaction that follows, a by-product called "chloromine" is produced, and chloromines are responsible for the smell. The way to remove these chloromines is to "super-chlorinate" the pool with a dose of 10ppm of Cal-Hypo. Regular superchlorination (every two weeks in summer) will eliminate these unpleasant odors in the pool. Generally, a well managed pool will have no smell or taste, be scrupulously clean, and have crystal clear water."

How do you all get bleach to the hotel???

I mean do you pack it???

We typically rent a car from the airport for one day to food shop for breakfast items, snacks, paper goods, beer & wine, laundery detergent & of course bleach. I know they have grocery delivery services, but I prefer to shop on my own. We usually end up doing ME back to the airport.

Okay now I'm really grossed out! ;)

Let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly.

If you smell "chlorine" in a pool, it's NOT clean (enough)???

Yet another reason I won't use public pools.

And another aside, I was reading a thread about the grossest things you've seen at WDW and here's another one for you guys...

Several posters have witnessed (as I have several times, as well), parents using drinking fountains as a bidet for thier diaper-wearing children.

Honestly, I think I'd rather drink from a "chloromine" smelling pool than a public drinking fountain.

Fill with hot, hot water & bleach. Run for 10 - 15 minutes. Drain, fill again with hot water & run again to rinse.

The bleach is an item on our wegoshop order everytime!

This is what we do. My mom and dad stayed with us in a two bedroom on our first DVC trip, she has a jacuzzi tub at home, so she did this for me. I'll continue doing it from now on. If it was just a normal tub--- I don't do anything, but I've heard that if you're running those jets, you should really clean them.

A tablespoon of bleach will bring the chlorination level in the tub to the level you will find in a typical pool or hot tub. Plenty to kill anything in the water, but not so much as to make the water unusable.

That's exactly what my mom did--- she measured a tablespoon of bleach.

When we get in the room I fill the tub with hot water dump in about a cup of bleach & let it run. If black stuff would ever come out of the jets though, I don't think even the bleach would get me in it!

This trip I brought one of those sponges with the nylon backing for non-abrasive scrubbing. I just ran the hot water and used a little detergent that was supplied for the kitchen. I was going to bring some stuff from home but didn't want to lug it with me.

One of the reasons I do bring something to "scrub" with is I love the bath balls from Basin. And some of them can leave a "color ring" in the tub and I think that's just yucky!!! Actually, I've stopped getting the ones with the "vivid" colors; had visions of coming out of the jacuzzi hot pink! :rotfl:
