How does waitlisting work with holding account?

Can someone please explain to me how the waitlist works with holding account? We're not owners yet, but trying to decide on a UY to buy. I believe the question fits best in this sub-section, but moderators, please feel free to move this to the Purchasing DVC section if necessary.

My question is the following:
Let's say that you have a reservation at DVC resort A for December 25-31 which costs 160 points and you are also waitlisted for a reservation at DVC resort B which costs only 140 points for the same dates. Usually, you will have until 1 month before check-in to cancel without having the points going into the holding account. so you would have until November 25 in this example. Let's say that your waitlist clears on December 20 for resort B. Then, now your reservation at resort A would be cancelled and you'll save 20 points by staying B. But since the waitlist didn't clear until Dec 20 which has past the deadline, does this mean that those 20 points will go into the holding account? or is there an "exception" for waitlist?

They would go into holding. You have the option to cancel the waitlist before the November 24 deadline and sticking with your original reservation. It is 31 days or more before checking to cancel without holdind. At 30 days or less, holding status applies.

Once those points are in holding, they would have to be used by the end of the current use year, and can ony be used for reservation made 60 days or less prior to check-in. Holding points also can not be banked.

When you set up the waitlist you will be given the option to have it automatically expire 31 days before arrival or choose to keep it open until 7 days before arrival. Whenever you are waiting for a lower point cost room you should always choose the 31 day expiration option to avoid points going into holding.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I had a question and thought this might be better than a whole new thread.

If have a room reserved and have a waitlist for a room that costs more points if you do not have the waitlist cancel until 7 days before and the room comes through 15 days before arrival will the points from canceled room be directly applied to the waitlisted (and higher point room) where in effect there are no holding points left from the canceled room?

Thanks.

Yes. The points from the cancelled reservation will be applied to the one that came through on the waitlist so there would be no points that end up in holding status.

It's always a good idea to verify that once you see that your waitlist came through. Sometimes MS makes mistakes and it's easier to fix those sooner, rather than later.

Great! That's what I was hoping. I appreciate the response.
